Book excerpt: We measure the rate of D°-{bar D}° mixing with the observable y{sub CP} = (?{sub K?}/?{sub KK}) - 1, where?{sub KK} and?{sub K?} are respectively the mean lifetimes of CP-even D° → KK− and CP-mixed D° → K−?+ decays, using a data sample of 384 fb−1 collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory. From a sample of D° and {bar D}° decays where the initial flavor of the decaying meson is not determined, we obtain y{sub CP} = [1.12 ± 0.26(stat) ± 0.22(syst)]%, which excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at 3.3?, including both statistical and systematic uncertainties. This result is in good agreement with a previous BABAR measurement of y{sub CP} obtained from a sample of D*+ → D°?+ events, where the D° decays to K−?+, K+K−, and {pi}+{pi}−, which is disjoint with the untagged D° events used here. Combining the two results taking into account statistical and systematic uncertainties, where the systematic uncertainties are assumed to be 100% correlated, we find y{sub CP} = [1.16 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.18(syst)]%, which excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at 4.1?

The analysis is based on a data sample of 384 fb−1 collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. They obtain ycp = [1.24 ± 0.39(stat) ± 0.13(syst)]%, which is evidence of D°-{bar D}° mixing at the 3? level, and?Y = [-0.26 ± 0.36(stat) ± 0.08(syst)]%, where?Y constrains possible CP violation. Combining this result with a previous BABAR measurement of ycp obtained from a separate sample of D° → K−K+ events, they obtain ycp = [1.03 ± 0.33(stat) ± 0.19(syst)]%.

Even though many searches were conducted over time, it was clear that the small scale at which both amplitude and frequency of the oscillation took place made any possible observation challenging. A time-dependent fit to the Dalitz plot of the decay D^0 -> K_S pi+ pi-, assuming no CP violation, finds for the DDbar mixing parameters, the normalised mass and width differences x and y, x = (0.43 ± 0.25 ± 0.20)% y = (0.70 ± 0.22 ± 0.17)% where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. For D and Dbar samples separately, we find x(D) = (0.49 ± 0.36 ± 0.20)% y(D) = (0.82 ± 0.31 ± 0.17)% x(Dbar) = (0.46 ± 0.35 ± 0.20)% y(Dbar) = (0.55 ± 0.31 ± 0.17)%.

After an introduction to the charm mixing phenomenology and analysis techniques, results of the mixing parameters and CP violation as related to mixing are summarized. They are obtained from hadronic two-body, multi-body final states and from quantum correlated D° decays of the experiments BABAR, Belle, Cleo and CDF. Mixing results from semileptonic D° decays can be found elsewhere.

Decay candidates are reconstructed from 10.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the DØ detector at Fermilab's Tevatron p$\bar{p}$ collder during the 2002- 2011 'RunII' data taking period. Yields are extracted using a 2 minimising simultaneous binned fit where 490k D candidates are reconstructed. The measurements presented in this thesis was made possible due to sophisticated online and offline reconstruction software, precise tracking systems, and the first-order background asymmetry negating magnet polarity reversal of the DØ detector.

Substantial experimental efforts are presently dedicated to improve our knowledge on neutrino properties as, in fact, we don't know yet some of the basic ones. Although very significant steps forward have been done, neutrino masses and mixings still remain largely unknown and constitute an important field for future research. Are neutrinos Majorana or Dirac particles? Have they a magnetic moment? Historically, studies on weak processes and, therefore, on neutrino physics, provided first the Fermi theory of weak interactions and then the V-A theory. Finally, the observation of weak neutral currents provided the first experimental evidence for unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions by the so called "Standard Model' of elementary particles. In addition to the results obtained from the measurement of the solar neutrino flux, the study of atmospheric neutrinos strongly supports the hypothesis of neutrino oscillation among different flavours. At the same time, the detection of neutrinos emitted by our Sun gave an important confirmation that the Sun produces energy via a chain of nuclear reactions; in particular in our Sun a specific cycle - the hydrogen cycle - is responsible for practically all the produced energy.
