Experimental evidence of mixing of the neutral kaon was obtained in 1956, followed in 1987 by the evidence of Bd mixing. In 1974, A. Pais and S.B. Treiman firstly introduced the idea of charm mixing and CP violation. Even though many searches were conducted over time, it was clear that the small scale at which both amplitude and frequency of the oscillation took place made any possible observation challenging. In 2007, both the BABAR and Belle experiments announced the first evidence of mixing in the charm sector. The analyses concerned the study of a two body decay of the D0 meson. Few months later, BABAR presented the analysis of the decay D0 2!K+[pi]-[pi]0 . This is the main topic of this thesis.

Book excerpt: I present a measurement of the mixing parameters in the D meson system, using 473.5 inverse fb of data from the BaBar detector. A time-dependent fit to the Dalitz plot of the decay D^0 -> K_S pi+ pi-, assuming no CP violation, finds for the DDbar mixing parameters, the normalised mass and width differences x and y, x = (0.43 ± 0.25 ± 0.20)% y = (0.70 ± 0.22 ± 0.17)% where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. For D and Dbar samples separately, we find x(D) = (0.49 ± 0.36 ± 0.20)% y(D) = (0.82 ± 0.31 ± 0.17)% x(Dbar) = (0.46 ± 0.35 ± 0.20)% y(Dbar) = (0.55 ± 0.31 ± 0.17)%.

Book excerpt: We measure the rate of D°-{bar D}° mixing with the observable y{sub CP} = (?{sub K?}/?{sub KK}) - 1, where?{sub KK} and?{sub K?} are respectively the mean lifetimes of CP-even D° → KK− and CP-mixed D° → K−?+ decays, using a data sample of 384 fb−1 collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory. From a sample of D° and {bar D}° decays where the initial flavor of the decaying meson is not determined, we obtain y{sub CP} = [1.12 ± 0.26(stat) ± 0.22(syst)]%, which excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at 3.3?, including both statistical and systematic uncertainties. This result is in good agreement with a previous BABAR measurement of y{sub CP} obtained from a sample of D*+ → D°?+ events, where the D° decays to K−?+, K+K−, and {pi}+{pi}−, which is disjoint with the untagged D° events used here. Combining the two results taking into account statistical and systematic uncertainties, where the systematic uncertainties are assumed to be 100% correlated, we find y{sub CP} = [1.16 ± 0.22(stat) ± 0.18(syst)]%, which excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at 4.1?

Book excerpt: The authors present a measurement of D°-{bar D}° mixing parameters using the ratios of lifetimes extracted from a sample of D° mesons produced through the process D* → D°?+, that decay to K−?+, I−K+, or?−?+. the Cabibbo-suppressed modes K−K+ and?−?+ are compared to the Cabibbo-favored mode K−?+ to obtain a measurement of ycp, which in the limit of CP conservation corresponds to the mixing parameter y. The analysis is based on a data sample of 384 fb−1 collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. They obtain ycp = [1.24 ± 0.39(stat) ± 0.13(syst)]%, which is evidence of D°-{bar D}° mixing at the 3? level, and?Y = [-0.26 ± 0.36(stat) ± 0.08(syst)]%, where?Y constrains possible CP violation. Combining this result with a previous BABAR measurement of ycp obtained from a separate sample of D° → K−K+ events, they obtain ycp = [1.03 ± 0.33(stat) ± 0.19(syst)]%.

Son but est d'extraire simultanément des deux sous-canaux B0->3Ks(pi+pi-) et B0->2Ks(pi+pi-)Ks(pi0pi0), les paramètres S et C de violation de CP . Il est intéressant de comparer les valeurs mesurées avec la prédiction du modèle standard.Le résultat obtenu est S = -0.935^{+0.238}_{-0.214} +- 0.063 et C = -0.166^{+0.180}_{-0.178} +- 0.038, où la première incertitude est statistique et la deuxième est systématique. Ce résultat est compatible avec la prédiction du modèle standard. La deuxième analyse est une analyse en amplitude (ou dans le plan de Dalitz). Elle est intégrée sur le temps. Son but est d'extraire le rapport d'embranchement (Br) total, ainsi que les rapports d'embranchement des modes résonnantes partiels. C'est la première fois que cette analyse est effectuée pour le canal étudie. Le résultat est Br(B0->KsKsKs )=(6.18 +- 0.47 +- 0.14 +- 0.06) x 10^{-6},Br( B0-> f0(980)Ks; f_0(980)-> KsKs)=(2.69^{+1.25}_{-1.18} +- 0.35 +- 1.87) x 10^{-6}, Br(B0-> f0(1710)Ks; f_0(1710)-> KsKs)=(0.50^{+0.46}_{-0.23} +- 0.04 +- 0.12) x 10^{-6}, Br(B0-> f2(2010)Ks; f_2(2010)-> KsKs)=(0.54^{+0.21}_{-0.20} +- 0.03 +- 0.44) x 10^{-6}, Br(B0-> Nonresonant KsKsKs)=(13.31^{+2.23}_{-2.30} +- 0.55 +- 2.77) x 10^{-6}, et Br(B0-> chi_{c0}Ks; chi_{c0}->KsKs)=(0.46^{+0.25}_{-0.16} +- 0.01 +- 0.19) x 10^{-6},où la première incertitude est statistique, la deuxième est systématique et la troisième est li\'e au modèle de l'amplitude.Aucun signal statistiquement significatif de la résonance controversée fX(1500) n'a été observé.

Book excerpt: This work is the result of the researchers carried out during a three years Ph. D. period in the BABAR experiment. The first chapter consists in an introduction to the theoretical aspects of the D° meson lifetime determination and CP violation parameters, as well as an overview of the CP violation in the B sector, which is the main topic of the experiment. The description of the experimental apparatus follows with particular attention to the Silicon Vertex Tracker detector, the most critical detector for the determination of decay vertices and thus of lifetimes and time dependent CP violation asymmetries. In the fourth chapter the operation and running of the vertex detector is described, as a result from the experience as Operation Manager of the SVT, with particular attention to the safety of the device and the data quality assurance. The last chapter is dedicated to the determination of the D° meson lifetime with the BABAR detector, which is the main data analysis carried out by the candidate. The analysis is characterized by the selection of an extremely pure sample of D° mesons for which the decay flight length and proper time is reconstructed. The description of the unbinned maximum likelihood fit follows, as well as the discussion of the possible sources of systematic uncertainties. In the appendix is also presented a preliminary study of a possible development regarding the determination of mixing and CP violation parameters for the D° meson.
