This book was released on 1982 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed account is given of the experimental and numerical modeling activities for the research period, relating to turbulent flow in a 180 deg curved duct. The measurements show variations in the flow field which, while understood, are not predictable by a K-epsilon model of turbulence. Numerical diffusion and exaggerated physical diffusion in the turbulence model are believed to be the major causes for the discrepancies observed. The new experimental data offered here should be of value for extending the theoretical base for the improved understanding and modeling of 3-D turbulent flows. Recommendations are made for continuing work.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both laminar and turbulent flows in strongly curved ducts, channels, and pipes are studied by numerical methods. The study concentrates on the curved square-duct geometry and flow conditions for which detailed measurements have been obtained recently by Taylor, Whitelaw, and Yianneskis. The solution methodology encompasses solution of the compressible ensemble-averaged Navier-Stokes equations at low Mach number using a split linearized block implicit (LBI) scheme, and rapid convergence on the order of 80 noniterative time steps is obtained. The treatment of turbulent flows includes resolution of the viscous sublayer region. A series of solutions for both laminar and turbulent flow and for both two- and three-dimensional geometries of the same curvature are presented. The accuracy of these solutions is explored by mesh refinement and by comparison with experiment. In summary, good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement between solution and experiment is obtained. Collectively, this sequence of results serves to clarify the physical structure of these flows and hence how grid selection procedures might be adjusted to improve the numerical accuracy and experimental agreement. For a three-dimensional flow of considerable complexity, the relatively good agreement with experiment obtained for the turbulent flow case despite a coarse grid must be regarded as encouraging. Book Synopsis Velocity Measurements in a High-speed Flow Through a Square Duct Containing a 90° Bend by : Preyank Sheth

This book was released on 2009 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is aimed at better understanding the nature of bend effects in a high Reynolds number duct flow. Bend effects have been previously studied using laser Doppler velocimetry and hot wire anemometry, but these are point measurement techniques, which limits the amount and type of data that can be obtained. The current work employs particle image velocimetry to present detailed field measurements of the flow velocity throughout the bend, including upstream and downstream sections. Additionally, velocity measurements have been carried out at three different Reynolds numbers to establish the dependence or independence of the bend effects on the flowrate. Associated turbulence quantities have also been calculated and presented in an intuitive, graphical manner. The test section is a square cross-sectioned duct, containing a 90 degree bend preceded by an 5Dh[subscript] upstream section and a 10Dh[subscript] downstream straight section, where Dh[subscript] is the hydraulic diameter. Turbulent flow entering the upstream section is fully-developed to allow the isolation of the bend effects. At Re ~ 2.76X105, detailed velocity measurements are acquired at 12 streamwise locations in three streamwise-radial planes at different heights (top, middle and bottom). Complementary data are obtained in a more limited set of locations at Re~1.76X105 and Re~3.20X105 to allow comparison of the bend effects at different flowrates. Turbulence intensities and the Reynolds shear stress components are calculated and presented for all three Reynolds numbers. One of the major aims of this work is to provide a benchmark for computational codes developed to study bend effects in a turbulent pipe flow. To allow easy comparison of these codes to the results of the current study, all the measured and calculated quantities are plotted in a curvilinear coordinate system in addition to the native cartesian (global) coordinate system.
