Book excerpt: There are a few questions that professional artists get asked regularly: Where do you get your ideas? How did you get started? And be honest—are you really in it for the money? Following the highly successful Me Funny and Me Sexy anthologies, Me Artsy answers these eternal questions and more. With essays from fourteen First Nations artists from a variety of disciplines, the collection provides insight into the paths that led each artist to pursue and develop his or her craft. The essays explore many common themes around the role of art in First Nations communities, including the importance of art for creating social change, the role of art in representing Native culture and the fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques. On a more personal level, the essays describe the significance of art in the lives of the contributors, along with their sometimes unlikely journeys to success, stories which are often touched with humour and humility. Chef David Wolfman describes gruelling years of prep work in the kitchens of the exclusive National Club; filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk discusses leaping into his first feature film without knowing how to finance it; fashion designer Kim Picard describes making a dress inspired by coffee beans; and playwright Drew Hayden Taylor tells the story of putting a bullet through his first play and burying it in his yard. Other contributors include actor/playwright Monique Mojica, painter Marianne Nicolson, painter Maxine Noel, blues pianist Murray Porter, scholar Karyn Recollet, dancer/choreographer Santee Smith, director/actor Rose Stella, drummer Steve Teekens, writer Richard Van Camp and manga artist Michael Nicholl Yahgulanaas.

Book excerpt: Humor has always been an essential part of North American aboriginal culture. This fact remained unnoticed by most settlers, however, since non-aboriginals just didn’t get the joke. For most of written history, a stern, unyielding profile of “the Indian” dominated the popular mainstream imagination. Indians, it was believed, never laughed. But Indians themselves always knew better. As an award-winning playwright, columnist, and comedy-sketch creator, Drew Hayden Taylor has spent 15 years writing and researching aboriginal humor. For Me Funny, he asked a noted cast of writers from a variety of fields — including such celebrated wordsmiths as Thomas King, Allan J. Ryan, Mirjam Hirch, and Tomson Highway — to take a look at what makes aboriginal humor tick. Their hilarious, enlightening contributions playfully examine the use of humor in areas as diverse as stand-up comedy, fiction, visual art, drama, performance, poetry, traditional storytelling, and education.

Book excerpt: DescriptionThis story is about the impracticality of the imagination, it's the story of Quentin, Art and Melody. Quentin is a well to do entrepreneur, Art is a dreamer & Melody is a really renown model. Quentin has made a wing with which he fly's over a huge expanse of South Africa. Art meets with Melody upon her arrival in East London, and comes in brief to fall for her beautiful charms. Melody is a working girl, she has the privilege of sailing by boat from Australia, to East London, where she meets Art and by a phenomenal working of chance, Quentin too. Between the lines is the tales beginning and end, the reality of my story. A strange brew of event and cerebral action. My tale of course meshed into theirs as they are of course sourced in the workings of my imagination. I am the addled Shizo-Affective one who dreams up this escape to cut myself free of the pain of this thing that has happened to me. To me, the imagination is the tool that is much underutilised, and in this tale, I have dreamt up the three fazes of recovery. Melody, someone to dream of and with, Art the creative side of endeavouring to be normal in life that is everything but normal, and Quentin, the dreamer, who takes the dream and works out of it a reality. There journeys and mine are the make up of "Odyssey." About the AuthorJonathan Swart, was born in 1975. He was born into the much evolving state of the empire, that was Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Book excerpt: A woman's magical mysterious, nightmarish, adventurous journey through men on her quest to have a better understanding of the male energy on her search to find genuine and everlasting love. Just as life brings her the masculine offering of a chance for love, along with experiencing another aspect of herself in reflection - her heart is disappointed even broken. She then is given the opportunity to heal, as she becomes even more aware of the masculine energy and her relation to it, along with a deeper awareness of her imprints and beliefs. As she travels forward on her journey, the pieces come together, break, then come together again offering her the ability to become more aware and whole. What if Eve was leading Adam to the opportunity to experience all and every dimension of life? The feminine as it relates to masculine and masculine as it relates to feminine. Male and female rubbing souls against one another for the possibility and benefit of what love creates and heals. And this is exactly what God intended - in the full power of 'his knowing' - that only a woman would be able to entice a man to do so. God, after all created the serpent along with the opportunity for choice without which there would be no dark defining light challenges on earth.

Book excerpt: From Pushcart-nominated author, Nik Xandir Wolf, comes a #1 best-selling debut suspense thriller. *A young couple accidentally kills a crooked cop and goes on the run, in Shadow Valley, a bestselling new release that Kirkus Reviews calls, “Consistently fast-paced and entertaining.” It’s 1988 and Heath Walker, who spent most of his life in group homes, bartends and sells weed to keep the lights on for his ailing foster mom. When Heath meets and quickly falls for the brazen and beautiful Rori Burke at his bar, he kicks off a series of events that leave both his mother and a cop dead, and Rori’s father—a crooked small-town police chief—on their trail. As the young couple tears away on their journey from Santa Cruz communes to cartel territory in Baja, Heath carries with him a ring that may hold the answers to what he’s been searching for his whole life: the identity of his real parents: a retired Mercenary and AWOL CIA Agent. As Heath and Rori’s journey grows ever more perilous, Heath not only has to stay one step ahead of Burke and the cartel, but begins to question why he is so surprisingly good at hurting the dangerous people who cross his path, and whether he is really any different than the men hunting him. Finally, south of the border, all of Heath and Rori’s past and present demons converge, bringing Heath closer than he’ll ever know to the Angel of Death who wears his same ring. "Consistently fast-paced and entertaining," -Kirkus Reviews "Shadow Valley is a perfect noir, violent, gritty, and rooted in place...a masterwork." - Tod Goldberg, NY Times Bestselling Author "Shadow Valley is one of the best rides I've taken in a long while. Fast, smart, and mesmerizing--this both introduces and establishes Wolf as a powerful new voice." - Rob Roberge, Author of Liar, and Cost of Living "Get ready to hold on to your seat belt...Shadow Valley is definitely a fast-paced crime thriller story with lots and lots of plot twists that you will not see coming! I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more by Nik Xandir Wolf." -Goodreads Reviewer "That vital blend of connection, passion, brutality, and poetry powers the novel...with a pared-down lyricism finding beauty in life without overstating it." -Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: You will be creating for the rest of your life. You might as well do it on purpose. Everyone was an artist, once. But somewhere between kindergarten and now, we lost the confidence to create. We’ve crumbled under the pressure to find our place in the “real, grown-up” world and now see the art room as a happy memory with no real value. Instead of approaching the world with childhood freedom and peace, we fear unmet ambitions. We fear that our lives have little meaning, purpose, or value. We fear that God has a plan for us, but we’re missing it. Yet if we travel back to our seats in the art room, art teacher Matt Appling reminds us of lessons we’ve forgotten, the joy of creating, and the freedom we had to succeed or fail. We can relearn these lessons and practice them to lead the contented, joy-filled, and productive lives that God created us to live.

All authors in this book, including those who contributed to Power and Identity in the Creative Writing Classroom, which launched the series ten years ago, are proof that creative writing matters, that it can be rewarding over the long haul and that there exist many ways to do what we do as writers and as teachers. This book captures a wide swathe of ideas on pedagogy, on programs, on the profession and on careers.

Art class probably did not mean much more than smearing crayons and paint onto construction paper-with no real value to an adult who is dealing with the pressures of relationships, careers, finances, and raising a family. Even with these external pressures, the biggest concern adults often face is the spiritual crisis of self-value. We fear unmet ambitions. We fear that our lives have little meaning, purpose, or value. We fear that God has a plan for us, but we're missing it. These fears prevent us from leading the productive, contented, joy-filled lives that God created us to live. And so, the long-forgotten art room actually holds three God-given keys, available to every adult, for living the life we were meant to live. When we entered the art room for the first time as kindergartners, we all instinctively knew some things that we would progressively forget over time and now it's time to learn them all over again.
