Book excerpt: Students and others interested in radio history will be intrigued by this fast-paced biography of Gordon McLendon's career in the radio industry, touching also on his work in motion pictures and involvement in Texas politics. Following a glimpse into his childhood, education, and military career, Ronald Garay describes McLendon's station ownership and management in Palestine, Texas; the development of a major network, the Liberty Broadcasting System; his live and recreated baseball and football programs; and his skirmishes with the major league baseball establishment. Much attention is given to how McLendon re-invented radio and competed with television and print media through his Top 40 music hits, disc jockey programming, and the use of local news. Important concerns regarding station trafficking, editorializing, and public interests are considered as well in this extraordinary book.

Book excerpt: On the lam from a vicious ex-wife who'd won everything but the kitchen sink in the divorce, Ken MacKay was a journeyman crew member on Rustam's Slipper, the sorriest scow ever to move cargo between stars. Then in a low-class spacers' bar in a miserable town on a no-name world he met Catarina Lindquist, the kind of girl his mom had always warned him about. She had alabaster skin, platinum hair, and slender legs that went from here to there and back again via the scenic route. Catarina's yen for Ken was almost as strong as her passion for chocolate. Alas for Ken, Catarina's other obsession was infectious, and so was she. Soon, Ken too needed chocolate to control the symptoms of McLendon's Syndrome-- they'd live damn near forever but they'd always have a Chunky (tm) on their back. Soon Naval Intelligence found a devious use for their mutual affliction: it assigned Ken and Catarina to the planet Macdonald, whose nonhuman inhabitants had a quaint theory about the true Secret Masters of the Human Race . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has long searched for the cause and meaning of mental illness. This second book continues in an attempt to answer those questions. The author/compiler has spent 47 years investigating these problems and his conclusion is that severe unconscious bisexual conflict and confusion lie at the root of all mental illness, as difficult to comprehend as this idea may be. The book itself consists of 773 quotations, from a variety of sources, all of which point to the unshakable truth of this hypothesis. This is a fixed law of nature, unassailable and constantly operative in every case. No other species but man is afflicted with mental illness because no other species has either the intellectual power to repress their sexual feelings nor the motivation to do so. The disease we call schizophrenia is but an arbitrary name, which is used to designate the end-stage of a process beginning with a slight neurosis. The more severe the bisexual conflict and confusion in the individual, the more severe the degree of the mental illness which is experienced. Several other investigators in the past have reached this same conclusion, but unfortunately their wisdom went largely unheeded. Hopefully this book will remedy that ill-advised neglect.
