Book Synopsis Unscripted America by : Sarah Rivett
Download or read book Unscripted America written by Sarah Rivett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1664, French Jesuit Louis Nicolas arrived in Quebec. Upon first hearing Ojibwe, Nicolas observed that he had encountered the most barbaric language in the world--but after listening to and studying approximately fifteen Algonquian languages over a ten-year period, he wrote that he had "discovered all of the secrets of the most beautiful languages in the universe." Unscripted America is a study of how colonists in North America struggled to understand, translate, and interpret Native American languages, and the significance of these languages for theological and cosmological issues such as the origins of Amerindian populations, their relationship to Eurasian and Biblical peoples, and the origins of language itself. Through a close analysis of previously overlooked texts, Unscripted America places American Indian languages within transatlantic intellectual history, while also demonstrating how American letters emerged in the 1810s through 1830s via a complex and hitherto unexplored engagement with the legacies and aesthetic possibilities of indigenous words. Unscripted America contends that what scholars have more traditionally understood through the Romantic ideology of the noble savage, a vessel of antiquity among dying populations, was in fact a palimpsest of still-living indigenous populations whose presence in American literature remains traceable through words. By examining the foundation of the literary nation through language, writing, and literacy, Unscripted America revisits common conceptions regarding "early america" and its origins to demonstrate how the understanding of America developed out of a steadfast connection to American Indians, both past and present.

Book Synopsis Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes by : Franz Muller
Download or read book Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes written by Franz Muller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes summarizes the present knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of free flavin, modified flavins occurring in nature, and deazaflavin. This information forms the fundamental basis for understanding the catalytic properties of flavoenzymes. Flavoproteins involved in transport, electron transfer, oxidation, dehydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions are discussed with respect to their biochemical and biophysical properties. The book presents the catalytic mechanisms of the flavoproteins in detail and, where available, three-dimensional structures and molecular biology data are included. The medical aspects of free and protein-bound flavin are also briefly discussed. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes is an essential reference source for chemists, biochemists, toxicologists, biologists, pharmacologists, and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry.

Book Synopsis Varieties of Victorianism by : Gary Day
Download or read book Varieties of Victorianism written by Gary Day and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-11-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected here all take issue with the claim that the Victorian period is the antithesis of our own. They show how characteristic postmodern anxieties and celebrations concerning truth, certainty and identity informed Victorian culture at all levels. Covering everything from attitudes to drink to the poetry of Browning, from the Great Exhibition to the Elephant Man, this volume shows not only how the Victorians coped with these challenges but also what lessons they have for us today.
Book Synopsis Chemical Thermodynamics by : M L McGlashan
Download or read book Chemical Thermodynamics written by M L McGlashan and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Book Synopsis A Mixture Model Approach to Empirical Bayes Testing and Estimation by : Omkar Muralidharan
Download or read book A Mixture Model Approach to Empirical Bayes Testing and Estimation written by Omkar Muralidharan and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many modern statistical problems require making similar decisions or estimates for many different entities. For example, we may ask whether each of 10,000 genes is associated with some disease, or try to measure the degree to which each is associated with the disease. As in this example, the entities can often be divided into a vast majority of "null" objects and a small minority of interesting ones. Empirical Bayes is a useful technique for such situations, but finding the right empirical Bayes method for each problem can be difficult. Mixture models, however, provide an easy and effective way to apply empirical Bayes. This thesis motivates mixture models by analyzing a simple high-dimensional problem, and shows their practical use by applying them to detecting single nucleotide polymorphisms.
Book Synopsis Oral History and Delinquency by : James Bennett
Download or read book Oral History and Delinquency written by James Bennett and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-01-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Henry Mayhew's classic study of Victorian slums to Studs Terkel's presentations of ordinary people in modern America, oral history has been used to call attention to social conditions. By analyzing the nature and circumstances of the production of such histories of delinquency, James Bennett argues that oral history is a rhetorical device, consciously chosen as such, and is to be understood in terms of its persuasive powers and aims. Bennett shows how oral or life histories of juvenile delinquents have been crucial in communicating the human traits of offenders within their social context, to attract interest in resources for programs to prevent delinquency. Although life history helped to establish the discipline of sociology, Bennett suggests concepts for understanding oral histories generated in many fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Studies Institute series "Targeting of Drugs" was originated in 1981. It is now a major international forum, held every two years in Cape Sounion, Greece, in which the present and the future of this important area of research in drug delivery is discussed in great depth. Previous ASIs of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu, ways by which the latter influences such interaction, strategies by which milieu interference curtailing the function of drug carriers is circumvented and, more recently, with the application of drug carriers for the delivery of peptides and proteins. The present book contains the of the 7th NATO ASI "Targeting of Drugs: Advances in System Constructs", proceedings held in Cape Sounion during 24 June -5 July 1993. As the title implies, the book deals with a variety of approaches to carrier design or modification that contribute to optimal carrier function. to Mrs Concha Perring for her assistance with the We express our appreciation organization of the ASI.
