Book excerpt: Two hydrodynamic experiments were conducted to measure drag reduction using riblets in turbulent boundary layers. The first was an external boundary layer experiment using a flat plate in a water tunnel, and the second was an internal boundary layer experiment using a 6-inch diameter pipe. Both experiments used adhesive-backed, vinyl, riblet film, manufactured by the 3M Co., with height and spacing of the symmetric v-grooves equal to 0.003 in. For the flat plate test, free stream velocities ranged from 6.5 ft/sec to 20 ft/sec, and Re sub theta ranged from 1260-7040. The results are in good agreement with aerodynamic data, and show a maximum drag reduction of 8.1% + or - 2.5% at s(+) = 13.1. Much larger percentages of friction reduction (approx. 3x as much) were measured with riblets in the pipe. When a drag-reducing polymer solution was used in conjunction with the riblets in the pipe flow, the total drag reduction was approximately equal to the sum of the drag reductions of the two techniques used separately, with some dependence on Reynolds number. Before these pipe flow results can be extended to general situations, further experiments are needed to investigate the boundary layer transition from smooth to riblet surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent drag reduction by additives has long been a hot research topic. This phenomenon is inherently associated with multifold expertise. Solutions of drag-reducing additives are usually viscoelastic fluids having complicated rheological properties. Exploring the characteristics of drag-reduced turbulent flows calls for uniquely designed experimental and numerical simulation techniques and elaborate theoretical considerations. Pertinently understanding the turbulent drag reduction mechanism necessities mastering the fundamentals of turbulence and establishing a proper relationship between turbulence and the rheological properties induced by additives. Promoting the applications of the drag reduction phenomenon requires the knowledge from different fields such as chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, municipal engineering, and so on. This book gives a thorough elucidation of the turbulence characteristics and rheological behaviors, theories, special techniques and application issues for drag-reducing flows by surfactant additives based on the state-of-the-art of scientific research results through the latest experimental studies, numerical simulations and theoretical analyses. Covers turbulent drag reduction, heat transfer reduction, complex rheology and the real-world applications of drag reduction Introduces advanced testing techniques, such as PIV, LDA, and their applications in current experiments, illustrated with multiple diagrams and equations Real-world examples of the topic’s increasingly important industrial applications enable readers to implement cost- and energy-saving measures Explains the tools before presenting the research results, to give readers coverage of the subject from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints Consolidates interdisciplinary information on turbulent drag reduction by additives Turbulent Drag Reduction by Surfactant Additives is geared for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Turbulence, Chemical Engineering, Municipal Engineering. Researchers and practitioners involved in the fields of Flow Control, Chemistry, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Experimental Fluid Dynamics, and Rheology will also find this book to be a much-needed reference on the topic.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laminar flow of a polymer solution near a flat plate of infinite extent was investigated theoretically for three cases: (a) the plate is impulsively started and moves in its own plane with a constant velocity; (b) the plate executes linear harmonic oscillations in its own plane; (c) motion of the plate in this plane is a random function of time. By combining the results with a simple model for turbulent flow near a wall, a number of experimentally observed characteristics of the drag reduction phenomenon are predicted. The merits of this transient shear explanation of drag reduction were compared to those of previously offered hypotheses. Some justification was found for expecting the transient shear flow mechanism to be dominant at large flow rates. (Author).
