This topic is important to research because the focused instructional model is a research-based approach to learning. This is an opportunity every day for students to have additional service delivery if their IEP needs require individual and/or small group service delivery, in addition to the push in, co-taught model that SSCPS embodies. This Focused Instructional Time can benefit not only students who have specific plans, but teachers can utilize the time to meet each student’s individual needs, including higher achieving students who wish to be challenged and extend upon topics taught in their regular education classrooms. After meetings with different administrators to understand their perspective on defining "focused instructional time," this researcher also met with teachers to gather their thoughts on the topic, and how they feel it should be utilized day to day. It is imperative that all adults in the school have the same drive and understanding of the expectations for that time with students to be successful. This researcher gathered, at random, ten students in fifth grade to be part of the target group for interventions, thinking that all students can increase their fluency and comprehension, regardless of instructional and independent reading levels.

Inquiry instruction is related to positive effect on learner motivation whereas supporters of direct instruction point to its ability to adequately support learners' working memories (Hmelo-Silver, Duncan, & Chinn, 2007; Kirschner, Sweller, & Clark, 2006; Kuhn, 2007; Sweller, 1988). This study examined the possibility of combining the best features of both inquiry and direct instruction by sequencing them together. A two-part lesson on electrical circuits was presented in three separate sequences of instruction to middle school students to determine if differences in student motivation and academic achievement emerge depending on whether a guided inquiry lab followed or preceded direct instruction. Results indicated equal levels of perceived competence by students across all instructional sequences and greater interest/enjoyment and perceived autonomy support when the instructional sequence began with a guided inquiry lesson. No significant differences in achievement were reported among the sequences.

Book excerpt: Although inquiry-based learning has been debated throughout the greater educational community and demonstrated with some effect in modern classrooms, little quantitative analysis has been performed to empirically validate sustained benefits. This quantitative study focused on whether inquiry-based pedagogy actually brought about sustained and measurable improved learning and higher levels of student engagement, satisfaction, and understanding. The present study employed classic stratified random sampling to form two sample groups. Sixth-grade student subjects in two middle school science classes completed a four step process: all students completed a 40-question objective pretest, students completed a unit of study in either an inquiry-based learning or a traditional didactic classroom, all students completed a 40-question objective posttest (same as pretest), and all students completed an online post lesson survey to rate personal perception of engagement, understanding, and satisfaction during the unit of study. SPSS statistical software was employed to ensure statistical procedures had been applied appropriately to the NEGD data compiled within the detailed procedures. The primary researcher disconfirmed Hypothesis 1: given two identically variable-controlled classrooms differing only by pedagogical approach, inquiry-based learning pedagogy would yield statistically significantly superior posttest results as compared to traditional didactic pedagogy. The primary researcher also disconfirmed Hypothesis 2: given two identically variable-controlled classrooms differing only by pedagogical approach, inquiry-based learning pedagogy would yield statistically significantly superior survey results as compared to traditional didactic pedagogy. The primary research confirmed Hypothesis 3: given two identically variable-controlled classrooms differing only by pedagogical approach, students would manifest a direct, positive correlation between student satisfaction and learning outcomes. The following are appended: (1) Student Survey; (2) Unit Pretest and Posttest Scores Data by Sample Group; (3) Survey Score Data by Sample Group; (4) SPSS Output for Testing of Hypothesis 1; (5) SPSS Output for Testing of Hypothesis 2; (6) SPSS Output for Testing of Hypothesis 3; and (7) Science Unit Objective Test for Pretest and Posttest.
