Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CCH's Practical Guide to Research and Development Tax Incentives--Federal, State, and Foreign by Michael Rashkin, J.D., LL.M., provides something that has been missing in professional tax literature--authoritative, comprehensive coverage of this complex and evolving topic. This newly expanded resource is practical, easy to follow, easy to understand, and is particularly effective at clarifying and demystifying this complex subject. It provides well-written, detailed guidance on claiming the federal credit for increasing research activities and the deduction for R & D expenditures. In doing so, it explains the elements of qualified research, exclusions, computational rules, and basic research payment credits. Historically, the IRS has been vigilant in denying R & D credits. This resource explains how to satisfy the IRS's requirements, document the credit, and defend against IRS challenges. It also examines research incentives offered by individual states and describes the R & D incentives available in the major economies of the world, offering helpful charts that show the key differences among the various countries.

Book excerpt: Because of the interaction between the research and development (R&D) expensing provisions and the tax credit, this Portfolio discusses these two issues in parallel. It first considers what types of activities give rise to expenditures that qualify as research and experimental expenditures for current expensing purposes, and then considers what types of activities can give rise to expenditures eligible for the research deduction or tax credit. The Portfolio also discusses several practical and technical issues in claiming the research credit, the basic research tax credit, and various miscellaneous matters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law of foreign investment is at a crossroads. In the wake of an unprecedented global financial crisis and a sharp surge of investment arbitration cases, states around the world are reflecting on the pros and cons of the current liberal investment regime and exploring new ways ahead. This book brings together leading investment lawyers from more than 20 main jurisdictions of the world to tackle the challenge of producing a first comparative study of foreign investment law. Based on the General and National Reports presented at the 'Protection of Foreign Investment' Session at the 18th International Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law (Washington DC, July 2010), the book is a unique resource for investment lawyers. Part I of the book presents a comparative overview of key aspects of foreign investment protection in the world today, including admission, investment contracts, treatment standards, tax regime and incentives, performance requirement, property and expropriation, monetary transfer and dispute settlement. Part II presents in-depth and detailed accounts of the investment laws of more than 20 jurisdictions, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, Turkey, the UK and the USA. The book will be an invaluable guide to legal and business communities with an interest in the law and practice of foreign investment in the world in general and in these jurisdictions in particular.

But what really works in innovation policy, and why? This Handbook, compiled by leading experts in the field, is the first comprehensive guide to understanding the logic and effects of innovation polices. The Handbook develops a conceptualisation and typology of innovation policies, presents meta-evaluations for 16 key innovation policy instruments and analyses evidence on policy-mix. For each policy instrument, underlying rationales and examples are presented, along with a critical analysis of the available impact evidence. Providing access to primary sources of impact analysis, the book offers an insightful assessment of innovation policy practice and its evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With growing academic and policy interest in research and development (R&D) tax incentives, the question about their effectiveness has become ever more relevant. In the absence of an exogenous policy reform, the simultaneous determination of companies’ tax positions and their R&D spending causes an identification problem in evaluating tax incentives. To overcome this identification challenge, we exploit a U.K. policy reform and use the population of corporation tax records that provide precise information on the amount of firm-level R&D expenditure. Using difference-in-differences and other panel regression approaches, we find a positive and significant impact of tax incentives on R&D spending, and an implied user cost elasticity estimate of around -1.6. This translates to more than a pound in additional private R&D for each pound foregone in corporation tax revenue.

This book is designed to give an overview of the SR&ED Program of the Canadian Tax Credits & Refunds System to the busy executive and the business owner/manager. In order to keep the Canadian businesses competitive in the present global market, the Canadian government offers one of the most generous incentives to Canadian businesses to encourage them to engage in scientific research and experimental development (SR&ED). It is also available to foreign corporations conducting SR&ED in Canada. It is estimated that only a very small fraction of those eligible actually apply for this credit. It is also estimated that in the last fiscal year tax credits running into billions of dollars were approved, including refunds to eligible businesses. There is no upper limit set by the Government as to the amount of tax credits it is willing to give to eligible businesses with regard to SR&ED. This information might make it worthwhile for you to take the time to read this book because it talks about millions of dollars in potential tax benefits and possibly cash refunds to you and to your business over the years and in some cases even in just one year!
