Book excerpt: During the author’s doctorate time at the Christian-Albrechts-Universitat to Kiel, Salvatore Siciliano gave a stimulating talk in the upper seminar algebra theory about Cartan subalgebras in Lie algebra associates to associative algebra. This talk was the incentive for the author to analyze maximal nilpotent substructures of the Lie algebra associated to associative algebras. In the present work Siciliano's theory about Cartan subalgebras is worked off and expanded to different special associative algebra classes. In addition, a second maximal nilpotent substructure is analyzed: the nilradical. Within this analysis the main focus is to describe these substructure with the associative structure of the underlying algebra. This is successfully realized in this work. Numerous examples (like group algebras and Solomon (Tits-) algebras) illustrate the results to the reader. Within the numerous exercises these results can be applied by the reader to get a deeper insight in this theory.

Book excerpt: Within series II we extend the theory of maximal nilpotent substructures to solvable associative algebras, especially for their group of units and their associated Lie algebra. We construct all maximal nilpotent Lie subalgebras and characterize them by simple and double centralizer properties. They possess distinctive attractor and repeller characteristics. Their number of isomorphic classes is finite and can be bounded by Bell numbers. Cartan subalgebras and the Lie nilradical are extremal among all maximal nilpotent Lie subalgebras. The maximal nilpotent Lie subalgebras are connected to the maximal nilpotent subgroups. This correspondence is bijective via forming the group of units and creating the linear span. Cartan subalgebras and Carter subgroups as well as the Lie nilradical and the Fitting subgroup are linked by this correspondence. All partners possess the same class of nilpotency based on a theorem of Xiankun Du. By using this correspondence we transfer all results to maximal nilpotent subgroups of the group of units. Carter subgroups and the Fitting subgroup turn out to be extremal among all maximal nilpotent subgroups. All four extremal substructures are proven to be Fischer subgroups, Fischer subalgebras, nilpotent injectors and projectors. Numerous examples (like group algebras and Solomon (Tits-) algebras) illustrate the results to the reader. Within the numerous exercises these results can be applied by the reader to get a deeper insight in this theory.

From my viewpoint, the volume is perfectly fit to serve as such a source, ... On the whole, it is quite a pleasure, after making yourself comfortable in that favourite office armchair of yours, just to keep the volume gently in your hands and browse it slowly and thoughtfully; and after all, what more on Earth can one expect of any book?" --The New Zealand Mathematical Society Newsletter

Book excerpt: This open access textbook presents a comprehensive treatment of the arithmetic theory of quaternion algebras and orders, a subject with applications in diverse areas of mathematics. Written to be accessible and approachable to the graduate student reader, this text collects and synthesizes results from across the literature. Numerous pathways offer explorations in many different directions, while the unified treatment makes this book an essential reference for students and researchers alike. Divided into five parts, the book begins with a basic introduction to the noncommutative algebra underlying the theory of quaternion algebras over fields, including the relationship to quadratic forms. An in-depth exploration of the arithmetic of quaternion algebras and orders follows. The third part considers analytic aspects, starting with zeta functions and then passing to an idelic approach, offering a pathway from local to global that includes strong approximation. Applications of unit groups of quaternion orders to hyperbolic geometry and low-dimensional topology follow, relating geometric and topological properties to arithmetic invariants. Arithmetic geometry completes the volume, including quaternionic aspects of modular forms, supersingular elliptic curves, and the moduli of QM abelian surfaces. Quaternion Algebras encompasses a vast wealth of knowledge at the intersection of many fields. Graduate students interested in algebra, geometry, and number theory will appreciate the many avenues and connections to be explored. Instructors will find numerous options for constructing introductory and advanced courses, while researchers will value the all-embracing treatment. Readers are assumed to have some familiarity with algebraic number theory and commutative algebra, as well as the fundamentals of linear algebra, topology, and complex analysis. More advanced topics call upon additional background, as noted, though essential concepts and motivation are recapped throughout.

Book excerpt: Proving that a polynomial ring in one variable over a field is a principal ideal domain can be done by means of the Euclidean algorithm, but this does not extend to more variables. However, if the variables are not allowed to commute, giving a free associative algebra, then there is a generalization, the weak algorithm, which can be used to prove that all one-sided ideals are free. This book presents the theory of free ideal rings (firs) in detail. There is also a full account of localization which is treated for general rings but the features arising in firs are given special attention.

Book excerpt: Lie superalgebras are a natural generalization of Lie algebras, having applications in geometry, number theory, gauge field theory, and string theory. This book develops the theory of Lie superalgebras, their enveloping algebras, and their representations. The book begins with five chapters on the basic properties of Lie superalgebras, including explicit constructions for all the classical simple Lie superalgebras. Borel subalgebras, which are more subtle in this setting, are studied and described. Contragredient Lie superalgebras are introduced, allowing a unified approach to several results, in particular to the existence of an invariant bilinear form on $\mathfrak{g}$. The enveloping algebra of a finite dimensional Lie superalgebra is studied as an extension of the enveloping algebra of the even part of the superalgebra. By developing general methods for studying such extensions, important information on the algebraic structure is obtained, particularly with regard to primitive ideals. Fundamental results, such as the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem, are established. Representations of Lie superalgebras provide valuable tools for understanding the algebras themselves, as well as being of primary interest in applications to other fields. Two important classes of representations are the Verma modules and the finite dimensional representations. The fundamental results here include the Jantzen filtration, the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, the Sapovalov determinant, supersymmetric polynomials, and Schur-Weyl duality. Using these tools, the center can be explicitly described in the general linear and orthosymplectic cases. In an effort to make the presentation as self-contained as possible, some background material is included on Lie theory, ring theory, Hopf algebras, and combinatorics.

Could you and I with Him consl?ire To grasp this sorry Scheme of things entIre' KHAYYAM People investigating algebraic groups have studied the same objects in many different guises. My first goal thus has been to take three different viewpoints and demonstrate how they offer complementary intuitive insight into the subject. In Part I we begin with a functorial idea, discussing some familiar processes for constructing groups. These turn out to be equivalent to the ring-theoretic objects called Hopf algebras, with which we can then con struct new examples. Study of their representations shows that they are closely related to groups of matrices, and closed sets in matrix space give us a geometric picture of some of the objects involved. This interplay of methods continues as we turn to specific results. In Part II, a geometric idea (connectedness) and one from classical matrix theory (Jordan decomposition) blend with the study of separable algebras. In Part III, a notion of differential prompted by the theory of Lie groups is used to prove the absence of nilpotents in certain Hopf algebras. The ring-theoretic work on faithful flatness in Part IV turns out to give the true explanation for the behavior of quotient group functors. Finally, the material is connected with other parts of algebra in Part V, which shows how twisted forms of any algebraic structure are governed by its automorphism group scheme.

Book excerpt: This second edition of Nonstandard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations provides an update on the progress made in both the theory and application of the NSFD methodology during the past two and a half decades. In addition to discussing details related to the determination of the denominator functions and the nonlocal discrete representations of functions of dependent variables, we include many examples illustrating just how this should be done.Of real value to the reader is the inclusion of a chapter listing many exact difference schemes, and a chapter giving NSFD schemes from the research literature. The book emphasizes the critical roles played by the 'principle of dynamic consistency' and the use of sub-equations for the construction of valid NSFD discretizations of differential equations.

Book excerpt: Graphical Enumeration deals with the enumeration of various kinds of graphs. Topics covered range from labeled enumeration and George Pólya's theorem to rooted and unrooted trees, graphs and digraphs, and power group enumeration. Superposition, blocks, and asymptotics are also discussed. A number of unsolved enumeration problems are presented. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of labeled graphs, followed by a description of the basic enumeration theorem of Pólya. The next three chapters count an enormous variety of trees, graphs, and digraphs. The Power Group Enumeration Theorem is then described together with some of its applications, including the enumeration of self-complementary graphs and digraphs and finite automata. Two other chapters focus on the counting of superposition and blocks, while another chapter is devoted to asymptotic numbers that are developed for several different graphical structures. The book concludes with a comprehensive definitive list of unsolved graphical enumeration problems. This monograph will be of interest to both students and practitioners of mathematics.
