Book Synopsis Resisting Colonialism and Communal Politics by : Rizwan Qaiser
Download or read book Resisting Colonialism and Communal Politics written by Rizwan Qaiser and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888-1958), has largely remained less explored as a political leader in the history of Indias struggle for independence. Two reasons seem quite plausible for this; one, historians have ignored the claims and contributions of those, generally described as nationalist Muslims in view of Indias Partition as they focused more on the politics and claims of the Muslim League; the second would be lack of knowledge of Urdu, in which, Azad has left behind a considerable corpus of evidence. The combination of the two has resulted in near silence of historians on political life of Azad, honourable exceptions notwithstanding. Such neglect and ignorance about the man and his times has left a void in our knowledge not only about Maulana Azad but the entire range of Muslim political opinion aligned with the cause of Indian nationalism and freedom movement. This volume provides a much needed and timely corrective. With the help of extensive but hitherto unexplored primary sources the author has been able to argue that Azads politics was continuously evolving while he remained steadfast towards composite Indian nationalism and resistant to communal politics. This volume is invaluable for scholars of Indian nationalism and Modern Indian History.

Book Synopsis Nonviolent Activism in Islam by : Hayat Alvi
Download or read book Nonviolent Activism in Islam written by Hayat Alvi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, author Hayat Alvi’s purpose and focus are to illustrate the legal basis for Islamic nonviolent activism, as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad promoted and exemplified. Maulana Azad’s endorsement of nonviolent civil disobedience as a means to expel British colonial rule from India poses a strong counterargument against Islamist extremism, and a legal precedent for nonviolent activism in Islam. Millions of Indian Muslims participated under Maulana Azad and Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership in nonviolent civil disobedience against the British Raj. These facts indicate that there is such a thing as nonviolent activism in Islam. Abul Kalam Azad introduced “nonviolent Jihad” in the form of civil disobedience. As a legitimate religious authority, trained as an Islamic jurist and scholar, he endorsed Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent civil disobedience and activism to free India from British colonial rule. A highly respected Islamic scholar and jurist, Maulana Azad’s endorsement of nonviolent civil disobedience provides the legal precedent for nonviolent activism in Islam. Contemporary Muslim leaders and activists can learn lessons from Maulana Azad’s example, and as Alvi’s thoroughly researched book shows, can be an argument against blind dogma, extremism, and militancy in the modern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its most brutal form, the prison in British India was an instrument of the colonial state for instilling fear and dealing with resistance. Exploring the lived experience of select political prisoners, this volume presents their struggles and situates them against the backdrop of the freedom movement. From Mohamed Ali, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the Nehru family, and Gandhi, to communists like M.N. Roy—we get a vivid glimpse of their lives within the confines of the prison in a narrative that is at times deeply personal and yet political. The struggles of some remarkable women of the time are also brought to the fore—be it the feisty doctor Rashid Jahan, Aruna Ali, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, or Sarojini Naidu. Extensively researched, the volume draws upon the records at the National Archives of India, private papers, creative writings of the prisoners, newspapers, memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies. The volume also brings to light the differences between Indian and European prisons during the colonial period and the conception of ‘criminal classes’ in the colony. Capturing the sharp pangs of loneliness, the poetry born out of solitude, and the burning desire for independence, Roads to Freedom breathes new life into accounts and tales long forgotten.

Download or read book The Dawn of Hope written by Abūlkalām Āzād and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-Hilal was an Urdu weekly founded and edited by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1912. The weekly played a significant role during the national struggle against colonialism and spread the message of nationalism and Political Conciousness among the Urdu speaking population. This led to a voice of protest among the Muslim population against the British. British in turn tried to suppress movement. But in a short period of its life, the Al-Hilal had firmly placed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad at the pinnacle of his literary and political fame where he remained throughout the liberation struggle and after. Abul Kalam Azad was not only a man of religion, but also a man of literature. He wedded to the spirit of Islam with the country's freedom struggle. The Al-Hilal reflects the first stage in this direction. The present selection from Al-Hilal (and its rendering into English) under the title `The Dawn of Hope' is an effort to bring out Abul Kalam Azad’s contributions to the English readers.
