Book excerpt: Reprint of 1911 English Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Matter and Memory is one of the four main works by the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941). Its subtitle is "Essay on the relation of body and spirit," and the book presents an analysis of the classical philosophical problems concerning this relation. Within that framework the analysis of memory serves the purpose of clarifying the problem. Matter and Memory was written in reaction to the book The Maladies of Memory by Th odule Ribot, that appeared in 1881. Ribot claimed that the findings of brain science proved that memory is lodged within a particular part of the nervous system; localized within the brain and thus being of a material nature. Bergson was opposed to this reduction of spirit to matter. Defending a clear anti-reductionist position, he considered memory to be of a deeply spiritual nature; the brain serving the need of orienting present action by inserting relevant memories.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Perfect Memory: How to Have and Keep It A Man of science has learned that the humble worm will not only turn, as promised by the proverb, but will also turn away, and refuse to enter a hole in which it has once received an electric shock. Here, then, is demonstration of the fact that the worm possesses a memory. None claims that the evidence suggests great mentality on the part of the earth-burrower; nevertheless, it makes clear that the faculty of memory is present in one of the lowest animal forms. . . Probably, this sort of memory is all the creature needs in its walk - or crawl - of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter The lectures which form the body of this book were delivered at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in the month of February, 1913, for The Norman W. Harris Lectures of this year. The fact that they were actual lec tures accounts for the form in which the text is given; and the further fact that the audi ence for whom they were prepared was com posed, for a large part, of people unfamiliar with both the facts and the methods of science must be accepted as the justification for the treatment of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Matter There is, fortunately, no need for me to introduce Dr. Gustave Le Bon to the British public, inas much as his works on psychology have a European reputation, and his Psychology of Crowds (long since translated into English) has become, in some sort, a classic. About ten years ago, however, he began to turn his attention to physical science, with the result that he entered upon the long course Of experimental research which is summarized in the following pages. This led him to the conclusion - to put the affair in its Simplest form - that all matter is radio-active in the same manner as uranium, radium, and the other so-called radio-active metals, and that this radio activity is but a step in the process by which it gradually sinks back into the ether from which it was originally formed. TO this he has lately added the corollary that, in the course Of this disintegration, energies Of an intensity transcending anything Of the kind previously Observed are very slowly and gradually liberated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memory and the Learning Process In like manner with all conceptions Take, for example, the law that the distance traversed by a freely falling body dur ing any number of seconds is equal to feet multiplied by the square of the number of seconds. Strictly speaking, to remember it we must know it; and to know it we must under stand it. Now, for a complete understanding there must exist in the mind conceptions of time, space, and matter, conceptions of what distance traversed and freely falling really mean; and there must exist a conception of what the square of a number means. In short, every thing that is involved in this phenomenon or law must have its internal representative in the mind. Why do we go so into detail on this matter? Merely because, as we shall later eu deaver to show, memory is based on imagery, and imagery, to a certain extent, on our conception of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Consciousness, Intelligence and Matter Quite recently, in reading a critical notice of Prof. Ernst Haeckel's latest work; the riddle OF the universe, I was pleased to note the general accordance of the ideas herein set forth concerning the (so to speak) intelligence of' matter with the Jena Professor's idea of a sole substance; although it had not occurred to me to label them monism. I concluded, however, to publish the essay for the benefit of my philosophic friends, as a fairly comprehensible introduction to one portion of the Monistic philosophy. Book excerpt: "Choreographing Relations" undertakes the experiment of a conceptual site development of contemporary choreography by means of practical philosophy. Guided by the radically empiricist question "What Can Choreography Do?" the book investigates the performances of Antonia Baehr, Juan Dominguez, Xavier Le Roy, and Eszter Salamon, and the philosophical works of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. It establishes a relation between these practitioners as an encounter in method, and develops method as a singular, material and experimental practice. In view of these singular methods and the participatory relations to which they give rise, Choreographing Relations offers a prolific inventory of arepresentational procedures that qualitatively transformed choreography and philosophy at the turn of the twentieth century.
