Book excerpt: ‘Matryoshka Infinities’ is the first in a series of literary works written by M.J.Rumyantsev. Science fiction of a different kind, written for more philosophically minded readers. A collection of 19 short stories. Prospective readers are cautioned that this book, despite of its genre, does not contain any descriptions of or references to: - loud explosions of stars or space ships, to be heard in an otherwise empty space surrounding them, - evil aliens and inter-stellar wars fought to either conquer new domains or bring about long awaited freedom to the already conquered solar systems. Although the book is written in English to convey the thoughts of all characters depicted in it, most of them neither speak it as their mother tongue nor do they have the faintest idea what ‘English’ is. It also does not contain those awkward first contact scenes in which English is used as lingua franca throughout the known Universe, from the very first sentence uttered. To compensate for the appalling lack of the above-mentioned features though, this book will present its readers with quite a few interesting scientific and moral concepts, some of which might be a bit ahead of their time, with some others going well into the depths of history. For those of a more curious nature, the book does not end with its last chapter and its end is to be found elsewhere.

Book excerpt: "The figure of the alien is at the heart of science fiction and has helped us to understand and explore interactions with other cultures and the possibilities of life beyond both the modern configuration of the nation-state and the natural order of life on earth. Alien Imaginations brings together canonical and contemporary works in the cinema and literature of science fiction, transnationalism, and globalization in order to examine the role of the alien as well as the realities of migration, labor, and life in the twenty-first century. The essays in this collection discuss films such as District 9, Avatar, and Code 46, as well as novels by H.G. Wells, Philip K. Dick, or Ray Bradbury. As we continue down the road to a global economy and culture, Alien Imaginations offers a critical reflection upon our 'imagined realities' while also turning to speculative fiction and cinema to provide us with examples of resistance, if not a utopian horizon"--

Book excerpt: This book brings together the historically separate domains of mental health and spiritual awareness in a holistic framework called InnerView Guidance. Building on strength-based and solution-oriented approaches to therapy, the InnerView model offers a unique psychospiritual approach which can be applied in any of the helping professions. InnerView recognizes the individual’s need for internal cohesion between psychological growth and spiritual development. It is a principle-driven paradigm that foregrounds ‘soul work’ as a central evolutionary task. The book presents the core concepts and methodology involved in the alignment of ego with soul. Chapters explain the theoretical roots of the model, explore practical applications in therapeutic settings, and introduce InnerView as a rich synergy of psychotherapy and spiritual guidance. Taking an original and cutting-edge approach, this valuable text will be essential reading for scholars and students, as well as practitioners in the fields of psychotherapy, counselling, life coaching, social work, and spiritual care.

Book excerpt: ... These ideas are not truths And in this world of duality We are the youths - We choose our own reality. Krisha Anant understands the world can be both wonderful and cruel, and that her reactions to events have the power to help shape her identity. In her first collection of poems, Krisha explores various themes and experiences that have impacted her coming-of-age journey while inviting others to look deep within to explore their own responses. Her reflections touch on the wishes that seem stuck in the realm of fantasy and the hopes she hears call in her soul, the memories that remain within the pockets of an old, red coat, the words that are better left unsaid, and a man who lives in 403B. Duality shares poems that reflect on the darkness and beauty in learning to accept ourselves and the choices that each one of us must make as a part of growing up.

Book excerpt: The twentieth century was not kind to Russia. Despite its great potential and remarkable achievements, the country also bore the weight of two world wars, a revolution and civil war, totalitarian tyranny, famine and ecological destruction, economic ruin, and imperial decline. Will Russia ever be prosperous, peaceful, and free? Seeking clues in the past, Michael Kort revisits earlier turning points in Russia's history--from the fall of the old regime to the establishment of the Bolshevik dictatorship and Stalinist totalitarianism; from the reforms and counter-reforms of Khrushchev and Brezhnev to the tumultuous years of change under Gorbachev and Yeltsin. Which strands of Russia's past is their successor, Vladimir Putin, weaving into the fabric of the present, and which are being allowed to fade, for better or worse? This new edition of The Soviet Colossus brings the story up through the first decade of the twenty-first century. Distinctively readable, judicious, and focused on critical events and questions, it integrates new revelations about the Soviet past and ongoing debates about the Soviet regime as well as its successor. It is the ideal text for as one semester history course or background for a political science course.

This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Yoga Sutra, the classical work on yoga, Patañjali summarizes the purpose of human existence in 195 concise sutras. They are intended as a curriculum and memory aid for the expert and can be recited in 25 minutes. His telegraphic style and the ambiguity of the Sanskrit terms lead to the fact that the Yoga Sutra is translated again and again anew and interpreted differently due to the personal experiences of the authors. In the translation of this issue, the keyword character of the sutras is retained and the explanatory commentary is illustrated by examples of the author’s own experiences from over 50 years of practical application of yoga techniques. "The purpose of every system of Yoga is to first get Samadhi and then stabilize it and let it find fulfilment in Unity. Yoga means union. When the mind gets united with Being, this is the state of Yoga. Union is union of the individuality with the cosmic unboundedness. Union is in Samadhi. And Dhyan (meditation) leads to Samadhi. Dhyan is that which takes the mind from the field of gross experience to the subtle experience, takes it to the quietude of the transcendental area. Dhyan or meditation is a direct way to Samadhi which is Yoga." – Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Book excerpt: WORLDS APART is an engrossing novel about a family whose lives are impacted by World War II. It depicts two brothers in America, Zalman and Jacob, who face, in their affluent lives, deceit, romantic and business betrayal, and bitterness. Meanwhile, their sister, Galina, struggles to escape the Nazis in Poland, and later, in war-torn Russia, forges a deep and lasting bond with her husband, and young daughter. The action alternates between Europe and the United States, contrasting the lives of the brothers, Zalman and Jacob, with their sister, Galina, in Poland and Russia. Just as terror threatens our lives today, the reader is transported to a time in history when Hitler, and his evil minions, spread death and destruction. Can Galina, and her husband, Adam, and baby, Marysia, survive the Nazis and Stalin's tyranny? Can Galina's brothers in America, Zalman and Jacob, overcome their family problems and reconcile? Will Galina be reunited with her brothers, Zalman and Jacob, in the United States?
