Book excerpt: A new apparatus was constructed to deposit mass-selected molecular ions in cryogenic matrices. The successful mass-selection was demonstrated for CS2+ and C6F6+ cations in solid neon. These ions were examined using visible and IR absorption as well as laser excitation and laser induced fluorescence resulting in new insights into their spectroscopy. Additionally, the tungsten oxides WO and WO2 and the novel rare gas compounds HXeCl and HXeBr were characterized using conventional matrix isolation spectroscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of the diffuse interstellar bands has been variously a curiosity, a co nundrum, and a nuisance for astronomers in the seven decades since the features were first noticed, but recently they have become a forefront issue in astrophysics. Ever since Paul Merrill, in a series of papers starting in 1934, pointed out the interstellar and unidentified nature of the bands, a Who's Who of twentieth century astronomers have tried their hands at solving the problem of identifying the carriers. Henry Norris Russell, Pol Swings, Otto Struve, Paul Ledoux, W. W. Morgan, Walter Adams, Jesse Greenstein, Lawrence Aller, and Gerhard Herzberg all briefly entered the stage, only to move on quickly to other problems where the chances for progress appeared more realistic. In more recent times a number of equally prominent scientists have pursued the bands, but generally only as a sideline to their real astronomical research. But in the past decade, and particularly in the past three years, the view of the search for the diffuse band absorbers as an interesting but perhaps quixotic quest has changed. Today there are several astronomers, as well as laboratory chemists, who are devoting substantial research time and resources to the problem and, as perhaps the most reliable indicator of the newly elevated status of research in this field, some research grants have now been awarded for the study of the bands.

For each detector, the historical background, design and principle are described, and the working parameters affecting the detector performance are analyzed critically and in detail. The analytical possibilities of the detectors and the main characteristics such as sensitivity, noise and minimum detectability are discussed. All the selective detectors that are currently used are discussed in detail. Combinations of GC with other techniques such as plasma emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry, ion-selective electrodes, piezoelectric sorption detector, mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy are discussed briefly.Chromatographers and users of gas chromatographs, especially in the field of environmental protection, agriculture, clinical chemistry, and toxicology will find the book useful to their work. Institutes and organisations dealing with analytical chemistry will also find it of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix-isolation spectroscopy, as a technique for studying unstable species, has had tremendous lasting powers. Since 1954, matrix-isolation has been able to assimilate new technology rather than being replaced by it. The matrix-isolation technique for producing and trapping new chemical species has been applied to an ever increasing range of chemical and physical problems since its inception. The last 12 years have seen a substantial number of new developments and applications of the matrix technique. The chapters in this book describe many of the contributions of matrix-isolation spectroscopy to chemistry and physics in the last decade, and as such predict the continued evolution of this technique over the next decade. Experimental techniques are generally closely related to the development of new apparatus, and each chapter has a section describing innovations in instrumentation such as the closed-cycle cryogenic cooler that has revolutionized the technique. In addition, each chapter describes many of the specialized methods used to prepare, trap and study particular new subject species. The volume will be an indispensable reference source for graduate students and other scientists new to this field, as well as chemists and physicists already involved in applied spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the 1990 Advanced Study Institute entitled "Fundamentals of Gas Phase Ion Chemistry" held at Mont Ste. Odile , Alsace, France, 25th June -6th July, 1990. The Institute brought together over 100 physicists, physical and organic chemists working on a wide variety of topics with gas-phase ion chemistry as the common theme. Many different viewpoints, making use of very different experimental and theoretical approaches, were brought to bear on the subject and provided a stimulating and up-to-date account of the subject. Although the Institute was built around the invited lectures, many specific points were addressed in workshops which consisted of informal discussion groups which were organised by participants during the Institute. This volume therefore contains not only chapters based on the lectures but summaries of many of the workshops which adds considerably to the diversity of information presented. This Advanced Study Institute was the fifth in a series of NATO-sponsored institutes devoted to various aspects of the physics and chemistry of gas phase ions. These meetings have been held every four years since the first, held in Biarritz in 1974, considered "Interactions between Ions and Molecules". The five volumes which comprise the proceedings of these meetings illustrate very clearly the many advances in theory and experiment which have taken place over the last 20 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The matrix isolation (MI) method has now been used for nearly thirty years. During this period it has been actively developed and the range of problems tackled greatly extended. Originally it was used for studies of transient species involv ing vibrational, electronic and ESR spectroscopy. Nowadays the study of transient species forms a comparatively small part of HI work since it has been amply demonstrated that very fruitful information can be obtained of the structure and interactions of stable molecules and their aggregates. In addition to the s~ectroscopic methods mentioned above the MI technique is nowadays a standard method in research based on vibrational relaxation, luminescence, Mossbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, pulsed NMR and photoelectron spectroscopy. The matrix isolation technique affords considerable advantages over more conventional methods in most applications of spectroscopy. Areas where the technique has been widely applied, or shows great potential, include: metal atom chemistry, and its relation to surface chemistry, high temperature inorganic species, transition metal complexes, interstellar species, free radicals and unstable molecules, conformational studies, molecular com plexes, and intermolecular forces.
