Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matrimony, Vol. 3 of 3 These words of cold comfort rang continually in Claud's ears, and effectually robbed other and more encouraging utterances of their sweet ness. There were days when it was pain and grief to him to hear his play mentioned - when he would escape into the streets, and wander hither and thither for hours with no other object than to be alone. But his spirits rose as the limit of uncertainty drew nearer; some alterations in the text, demanded at the last moment by Mdlle. Thomery, an imperious lady, afforded him employment; a full-dress rehearsal, which passed off without any con tretemps, served to cheer him; and when the supreme moment came, he was able, with some creditable Show Of outward composure, to enter the box in which his wife, Varinka and Gene vieve, attended by Miss Potts, had already taken their places. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matrimony, Vol. 2 of 3 If, in the course of the interview just described, Claud and Miss Flemyng had turned their eyes towards the hill-top behind them, instead of alternately studying one another's faces and the ground, they would have seen, standing out in bold relief against the sky, two dark figures, Whose relative attitudes corresponded exactly to their own. For the lawns and shrubberies that encircle Southlands abound in winding walks; and although, When young men and maidens saunter out by twos in the gloaming, all paths are likely, figuratively speak ing, to lead towards the same point, it is well for the comfort of those concerned that they need not invariably do SO in a literal sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marriage of Elinor, Vol. 1 of 3 Mr. Tatham was a well-built and vigorous man of five-and-thirty, with health, good behaviour, and well-being in every line of his cheerful countenance and every close curl of his brown hair. His hair was very curly, and helped to give him the cheerful look which was one of his chief characteristics. Nevertheless, when these innocent seeming words, 'do you know the man?' which was more certainly demonstrative of certain facts than had those facts been stated in the fullest detail, met his eye, Mr. Tatham paused and laid down the letter with a start. His ruddy colour paled for the moment, and he felt something which was like the push or poke of a blunt but heavy weapon somewhere in the regions of the heart. For the moment he felt that he could not read any more. Do you know the man?' He did not even ask what man in the momentary sickness of his heart. Then he said to himself almost angrily, 'well!' and took up the letter again and read to the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "A History of Matrimonial Institutions" is a book based on the author's belief that a thorough understanding of the social evolution of any people must rest upon the broader experience of mankind and that the human family, in particular, with all that the word connotes, is commanding greater attention. Accordingly, in the first part the attempt is made to present a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the literature and the theories of primitive matrimonial institutions, while the second and the third part feature the history of matrimonial institutions in England and in the United States._x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ Analysis of the Literature and the Theories of Primitive Matrimonial Institutions:_x000D_ The Patriarchal Theory_x000D_ Theory of the Horde and Mother-Right_x000D_ Theory of the Original Pairing or Monogamous Family_x000D_ Rise of the Marriage Contract_x000D_ Early History of Divorce_x000D_ Matrimonial Institutions in England:_x000D_ Old English Wife-Purchase Yields to Free Marriage_x000D_ Rise of Ecclesiastical Marriage: The Church Accepts the Lay Contract and Ceremonial_x000D_ Rise of Ecclesiastical Marriage: The Church Develops and Administers Matrimonial Law_x000D_ The Protestant Conception of Marriage_x000D_ Rise of Civil Marriage_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ History of Separation and Divorce under English and Ecclesiastical Law:_x000D_ The Early Christian Doctrine and the Theory of the Canon Law_x000D_ The Protestant Doctrine of Divorce_x000D_ Law and Theory during Three Centuries_x000D_ Matrimonial Institutions in the United States:_x000D_ Obligatory Civil Marriage in the New England Colonies_x000D_ Ecclesiastical Rites and the Rise of Civil Marriage in the Southern Colonies_x000D_ Optional Civil or Ecclesiastical Marriage in the Middle Colonies_x000D_ Divorce in the American Colonies_x000D_ A Century and a Quarter of Marriage Legislation in the United States, 1776-1903_x000D_ Volume 3:_x000D_ A Century and a Quarter of Divorce Legislation in the United States:_x000D_ The New England States_x000D_ The Southern and Southwestern States_x000D_ The Middle and the Western States_x000D_ Problems of Marriage and the Family:_x000D_ The Function of Legislation_x000D_ The Function of Education...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Matrimony: A Treatise on the Divine Laws of Marriage A Treatise on the Divine laws of marriage has long been a recognized need in the Anglican communion. It remains to be seen whether the present volume will be found to meet this need with any adequacy. I have endeavoured to indicate as fully as possible all the various sources from which my material has been drawn. It will be sufficient here to notice (a) That the references to the Fathers are commonly given with the paging of Migne's Patrologia, as being the collection readiest to hand in the great public libraries, and (b) That among modern writers I am mainly indebted to the four following: - 1. Keble, Sequel to the argument against unduly repealing the laws which treat the nuptial bond as indissoluble. Oxford, 1857. 2. Zhishman, Dr. Jos., Das Eherecht der Orientalischen Kirche. Wien, 1864. 3. Freisen, Dr. Jos., Geschichte der Canonischen Eherechts. Tubingen, 1888. 4. Thiersch, Heinrich W. J., Das Verbot der Ehe innerhalb der nahen Verwandtsehaft. Nordlingen, 1869. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to my old friend Dr. Serrell, of Lincoln's Inn, for his goodness in undertaking the burdensome labour of revising the work for the press. The fact that Dr. Serrell's own standpoint precludes his sympathy with my arguments, or his acceptance of my conclusions, can only make me the more grateful to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Married, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale I had no right to more attention that night than anyone else, and my sisters were taller and better looking than myself, saving only, I must say, that latent ambition to be some thing better and wiser, which I think belonged peculiarly to me and gave me a greater earnestness in dealing with things, and which as expressed, perhaps in my face, laid more hold of those with whom we had to do. But upon this occasion it was my birthday, and my dear father had long promised me a party on my birthday. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amazing Marriage, Vol. 1 Everybody has heard of the beautiful Countess of Cressett, who was one of the lights of this country at the time when crowned heads were running over Europe, crying out for charity's sake to be amused after their tiresome work of slaughter: and you know what a dread they have of moping. She was famous for her fun and high spirits besides her good looks, which you may judge of for yourself on a walk down most of our great noblemen's collections of pictures in England, where you will behold her as the goddess Diana fitting an arrow to a bow; and elsewhere an Amazon holding a spear; or a lady with dogs, in the costume of the day; and in one place she is a nymph, if not Diana herself, gazing at her naked feet before her attendants loosen her tunic for her to take the bath, and her hounds are pricking their ears, and you see antlers of a stag behind a block of stone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Dear Monsignor, The present volume is a development of the Essay on the Sanctity of Christian Marriage, which was read at the Monthly Conference of Clergy, held at the Bishops Seminary, in November last, at which you presided. The kind approval manifested by the members on that occasion, which you were good enough to endorse, as well as the general wish then expressed that the Essay should be printed for their use, led to its revision and preparation for the press. The time has come when the request of the Conference is about to be carried out. There would seem, therefore, to be a fitness in associating its publication with those to whose kind encouragement it may be supposed to be due. This Conference case was understood to be the outcome of the Bishops anxiety to check and remedy pressing evils in his Diocese arising from the prevalence of mixed and irreligious Marriages. The present volume, therefore, aims at being practical and suggestive, and necessarily omits much that a treatise upon Marriage might be expected to contain.
