Book excerpt: Pendragon Press is proud to offer this new, revised, and expanded edition of Formalized Music, Iannis Xenakis's landmark book of 1971. In addition to three totally new chapters examining recent breakthroughs in music theory, two original computer programs illustrating the actual realization of newly proposed methods of composition, and an appendix of the very latest developments of stochastic synthesis as an invitation to future exploration, Xenakis offers a very critical self-examination of his theoretical propositions and artistic output of the past thirty-five years. This edition of Formalized Music is an essential tool for understanding the man and the thought processes of one of this century's most important and revolutionary musical figures.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities II by : José Luis Cisneros-Molina
Download or read book Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities II written by José Luis Cisneros-Molina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the Handbook of the Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series which aims to provide an accessible account of the state-of-the-art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. This volume consists of ten chapters which provide an in-depth and reader-friendly survey of some of the foundational aspects of singularity theory and related topics. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general. Singularity theory interacts energetically with the rest of mathematics, acting as a crucible where different types of mathematical problems interact, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other parts of the subject, and in other subjects. Authored by world experts, the various contributions deal with both classical material and modern developments, covering a wide range of topics which are linked to each other in fundamental ways. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: powerful operations on them. An early step in this direction was the development of APl, and more recent examples have been SETl which enables a user to code in terms of mathematical enti ties such as sets and BDl which allows a user, presumably a businessman, to specify a computation in terms of a series of tabular forms and a series of processing paths through which data flows. The design and implementation of such languages are examined in chapters by P. GOLDBERG. Another extension to traditional methods is made possible by systems designed to automatically handle low level flow-of control decisions. All the above higher level languages do this implicitly with their built in operators. PROLOG is a language which does this with a theorem proving mechanism employing primarily unification and backtracking. The programmer specifies the problem to be solved with a set of formal logic statements including a theorem to be proved. The theorem proving system finds a way to combine the axioms to prove the theorem, and in the process, it completes the desired calculation. H. GAllAIRE has contributed a chapter describing PROLOG giving many examples of its usage.

Download or read book Physics on Manifolds written by M. Flato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

Book Synopsis Anintroduction to Continuous Optimization / Second Edition by : Niclas Andreasson
Download or read book Anintroduction to Continuous Optimization / Second Edition written by Niclas Andreasson and published by Studentlitteratur AB. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimisation, or mathematical programming, is a fundamental subject within decision science and operations research, in which mathematical decision models are constructed, analysed, and solved. The books focus lies on providing a basis for the analysis of optimisation models and of candidate optimal solutions for continuous optimisation models. The main part of the mathematical material therefore concerns the analysis and linear algebra that underlie the workings of convexity and duality, and necessary/sufficient local/global optimality conditions for continuous optimisation problems. Natural algorithms are then developed from these optimality conditions, and their most important convergence characteristics are analysed. The book answers many more questions of the form Why? and Why not? than How?. We use only elementary mathematics in the development of the book, yet are rigorous throughout. The book provides lecture, exercise and reading material for a first course on continuous optimisation and mathematical programming, geared towards third-year students, and has already been used as such for nearly ten years. The preface to the second edition describes the main changes made since the first, 2005, edition. The book can be used in mathematical optimisation courses at any mathematics, engineering, economics, and business schools. It is a perfect starting book for anyone who wishes to develop his/her understanding of the subject of optimisation, before actually applying it.
