Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for the Practical Man: Explaining Simply and Quickly All the Elements of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Logarithms, Coo rdinate Geometry, Calculus IN preparing this work the author has been prompted by many reasons, the most important of which are: The dearth of short but complete books covering the fundamentals of mathematics. The tendency of those elementary books which begin at the beginning to treat the subject in a popular rather than in a scientific manner. Book excerpt: Master the fundamentals first for a smoother ride through math Basic Math & Pre-Algebra Workbook For Dummies is your ticket to finally getting a handle on math! Designed to help you strengthen your weak spots and pinpoint problem areas, this book provides hundreds of practice problems to help you get over the hump. Each section includes a brief review of key concepts and full explanations for every practice problem, so you'll always know exactly where you went wrong. The companion website gives you access to quizzes for each chapter, so you can test your understanding and identify your sticking points before moving on to the next topic. You'll brush up on the rules of basic operations, and then learn what to do when the numbers just won't behave—negative numbers, inequalities, algebraic expressions, scientific notation, and other tricky situations will become second nature as you refresh what you know and learn what you missed. Each math class you take builds on the ones that came before; if you got lost somewhere around fractions, you'll have a difficult time keeping up in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus—so don't fall behind! This book provides plenty of practice and patient guidance to help you slay the math monster once and for all. Make sense of fractions, decimals, and percentages Learn how to handle inequalities, exponents, square roots, and absolute values Simplify expressions and solve simple algebraic equations Find your way around a triangle, circle, trapezoid, and more Once you get comfortable with the rules and operations, math takes on a whole new dimension. Curiosity replaces anxiety, and problems start feeling like puzzles rather than hurdles. All it takes is practice. Book excerpt: Calculus For Dummies, 2nd Edition (9781118791295) is now being published as Calculus For Dummies, 2nd Edition (9781119293491). While this version features an older Dummies cover and design, the content is the same as the new release and should not be considered a different product. Slay the calculus monster with this user-friendly guide Calculus For Dummies, 2nd Edition makes calculus manageable—even if you're one of the many students who sweat at the thought of it. By breaking down differentiation and integration into digestible concepts, this guide helps you build a stronger foundation with a solid understanding of the big ideas at work. This user-friendly math book leads you step-by-step through each concept, operation, and solution, explaining the "how" and "why" in plain English instead of math-speak. Through relevant instruction and practical examples, you'll soon learn that real-life calculus isn't nearly the monster it's made out to be. Calculus is a required course for many college majors, and for students without a strong math foundation, it can be a real barrier to graduation. Breaking that barrier down means recognizing calculus for what it is—simply a tool for studying the ways in which variables interact. It's the logical extension of the algebra, geometry, and trigonometry you've already taken, and Calculus For Dummies, 2nd Edition proves that if you can master those classes, you can tackle calculus and win. Includes foundations in algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus concepts Explores sequences, series, and graphing common functions Instructs you how to approximate area with integration Features things to remember, things to forget, and things you can't get away with Stop fearing calculus, and learn to embrace the challenge. With this comprehensive study guide, you'll gain the skills and confidence that make all the difference. Calculus For Dummies, 2nd Edition provides a roadmap for success, and the backup you need to get there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Mathematics for Beginners The view that engineers and skilled artizans can be given a mathematical training through the agency of the calculations they are actually called upon to make at their work, steadily gains in popularity. The ordinary method of spending many years upon the formal study of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and the calculus may be of value in the development of the logical faculty, but it is unsuitable for the practical man, because he has neither the time nor the inclination to study along academic lines. But though Practical Mathematics secures more and more adherents, the subject is still in a tentative stage. The recent revision of the syllabus issued by the Board of Education only two years after its first appearance, is evidence of this. The present volume is designed to help students in classes where the new course of work issued from South Kensington forms the basis of the lessons of the winter session. Such students are supposed to be familiar with the simple rules of arithmetic, including vulgar fractions, hence the present volume commences with the decimal system of notation. The modern contracted methods of calculation, which are so useful in practical problems, are not taught in many schools and they are therefore introduced at an early stage. In the extensive range of subjects included in the present volume care has been taken to avoid all work that partakes of the mere puzzle order, and only those processes of constant practical value have been introduced. Since, in mathematical teaching especially, "example is better than precept," a prominent place is given to typical worked out examples. In nearly ail cases these are such as occur very frequently in the workshop or drawing office. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book uses simple geometry, trigonometry and algebra to explain how to construct and calculate the golden ratio. Starting from Euclid's propositions in The Elements, the golden ratio and its related geometry such as the pentagon, pentagram and Vesica Piscis are constructed and determined graphically. Then the value of the ratio is solved by quadratic equations, and depending on the initial assumptions, two values are found. It is proposed that the ratio can be obtained easily by applying the Pythagoras' theorem. Common terms like golden triangle, golden rhombus, golden spiral and golden angle are deduced and explained. The connections between the golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers, continued fractions, fractals, chaos and tiling are also introduced. The conclusion is that it is mathematics and not the golden ratio that is fascinating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.
