The text has been used in the form of mimeographed notes for several years in the classroom, and has been modified from time to time in the light of experience and of new conditions. It was soon found that it was not safe to assume too much preparation on the part of students taking the course. Consequently, material is pre sented in the text for study and practice in basic elementary pro cesses in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Some study of this material will suffice for those students who have not had the proper preparation for the course as well as for those students who wish to review elementary facts and principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for Agricultural Students Fifth, to include certain material not elsewhere readily accessible to the student of science, for the purpose of rendering the book useful for reference throughout the four years of the college course. Sixth, to select the topics and the amount of material under each topic so that either a half year or a full year may be devoted to the work. In writing this book the author had in mind the preparation of a text which would: First, train the student to do neat and careful work. Second, encourage the student to make further use of elementary Algebra and Geometry. Third, develop in the student the habit of careful and logical thinking. Fourth, train the student to study a problem with a view of discovering the shortest and easiest method of handling it, rather than attacking it by the "first thought-of" method. Fifth, show the student, by illustrations and exercises, how mathematics may be helpful in pursuing other subjects of study and useful in a "practical" way. While this book includes enough material for a year's course of study, it is believed that it does not contain too much material for a shorter course. The inclusion of additional material in the text, will at least let the student know of the existence of subjects in mathematics not covered by him in the class room. Even this superficial knowledge may be very helpful to him later in connection with other scientific work, especially if he knows he can find brief discussions in a familiar book. The author takes this opportunity to thank Professor C.S. Slichter for assistance in the preparation of the entire manuscript; and to acknowledge his indebtedness to Professor E. V. Today, however, the teachers of mathematics and classics are less anxious than formerly to be classified apart. Even the more conservative now write books on why they do as they do and they speak with a certain vehemence which betokens anxiety. All these indications make it clear that the change in the high-school curriculum which began with the introduction of new subjects will not come to an end until many changes have been made in the traditional subjects also. The interest of today is in supervised study, in better modes Of helping students to think, in economy Of human energy and enthusiasm. This means inevitably a reworking Of the subjects taught in the schools. On the other hand, a greater variety of curves are given, and it is believed that greater emphasis is placed on the essential principles. All work in three dimensions is postponed to the second year, and is to be taken up in the second volume in connection with functions of two or more variables, partial differentiation, and double and triple integration. This volume contains the matter usually given in a first course in differential calculus, with the exception of differentials, series, indeterminate forms, partial differentiation, envelopes, and some advanced applications to curves. These subjects will find their appropriate place in the further development of the course in the second volume. Integration has been sparingly used as the inverse operation of differentiation. And without employing the integral Sign. Simple applications to areas and velocities are given. To do more would require the expenditure of too much time on the Operation of integration, and the introduction of too many new ideas into one year's work. The integral, as a limit of a sum, with its many applications, will form an important part of the second year's work. In the preparation of the text the needs of a student who desires to use mathematics as a tool in engineering and scientific work have been primarily considered, but it is believed that the course is also adapted to the student who studies mathematics for its own sake. Abstract discussions are avoided and frequent applications and illustrations are given. Illustrations, however, which are beyond the range of a first-year student's knowledge of physical science are omitted. The proofs are made as rigorous as the maturity of the student will admit. It is to be remembered in this connection that the earlier chapters are to be studied by students who have just entered college.
