Book Synopsis Parents and the Evolving Math Curriculum by : Kailyn Heather Scobie
Download or read book Parents and the Evolving Math Curriculum written by Kailyn Heather Scobie and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current-day mathematics curriculum is evidently different from the traditional means of teaching math. Due to this, there exist disparities between a child's math education and their parent or guardian's math education. This thesis will present firsthand evidence on how these disparities affect a parent's perception of current-day curriculum, the extent to which parents can support their child in their learning of mathematics at home, and will strive to attend to the needs of both the parents or guardians as well as students in supporting the learning of these new concepts and strategies. With this, the research question asks: What are parents' or guardians' perceptions of current-day math curricula, and how can I best support families in their understanding of the mathematics being taught? This research lies in the survey study that was sent to parents or guardians of kindergarten through sixth-grade students from a specific school that I was associated with at the time. The results determined the need for educators to better support parents in their support of their children's mathematical understandings. Therefore, this thesis will provide educators with an understanding of parental perceptions and inquiries on mathematics as well as a plethora of resources, strategies, and examples that can be used as a stepping stone to bridge the gap between the "old" mathematics and the "new" mathematics"--Leaf 2.

Book Synopsis Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Materials by : Janine T. Remillard
Download or read book Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Materials written by Janine T. Remillard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents comparative analyses of five elementary mathematics curriculum programs used in the U.S. from three different perspectives: the mathematical emphasis, the pedagogical approaches, and how authors communicate with teachers. These perspectives comprise a framework for examining what curriculum materials are comprised of, what is involved in reading and interpreting them, and how curriculum authors can and do support teachers in this process. Although the focus of the analysis is 5 programs used at a particular point in time, this framework extends beyond these specific programs and illuminates the complexity of curriculum materials and their role in teaching in general. Our analysis of the mathematical emphasis considers how the mathematics content is presented in each program, in terms of sequencing, the nature of mathematical tasks (cognitive demand and ongoing practice), and the way representations are used. Our analysis of the pedagogical approach examines explicit and implicit messages about how students should interact with mathematics, one another, the teacher, and the textbook around these mathematical ideas, as well as the role of the teacher. In order to examine how curriculum authors support teachers, we analyze how they communicate with teachers and what they communicate about, including the underlying mathematics, noticing student thinking, and rationale for design elements. The volume includes a chapter on curriculum design decisions based on interviews with curriculum authors.

Book Synopsis Mindset Mathematics: Visualizing and Investigating Big Ideas, Grade 6 by : Jo Boaler
Download or read book Mindset Mathematics: Visualizing and Investigating Big Ideas, Grade 6 written by Jo Boaler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engage students in mathematics using growth mindset techniques The most challenging parts of teaching mathematics are engaging students and helping them understand the connections between mathematics concepts. In this volume, you'll find a collection of low floor, high ceiling tasks that will help you do just that, by looking at the big ideas at the sixth-grade level through visualization, play, and investigation. During their work with tens of thousands of teachers, authors Jo Boaler, Jen Munson, and Cathy Williams heard the same message—that they want to incorporate more brain science into their math instruction, but they need guidance in the techniques that work best to get across the concepts they needed to teach. So the authors designed Mindset Mathematics around the principle of active student engagement, with tasks that reflect the latest brain science on learning. Open, creative, and visual math tasks have been shown to improve student test scores, and more importantly change their relationship with mathematics and start believing in their own potential. The tasks in Mindset Mathematics reflect the lessons from brain science that: There is no such thing as a math person - anyone can learn mathematics to high levels. Mistakes, struggle and challenge are the most important times for brain growth. Speed is unimportant in mathematics. Mathematics is a visual and beautiful subject, and our brains want to think visually about mathematics. With engaging questions, open-ended tasks, and four-color visuals that will help kids get excited about mathematics, Mindset Mathematics is organized around nine big ideas which emphasize the connections within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and can be used with any current curriculum.

Book Synopsis Helping Children Learn Mathematics by : National Research Council
Download or read book Helping Children Learn Mathematics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-31 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from national and international assessments indicate that school children in the United States are not learning mathematics well enough. Many students cannot correctly apply computational algorithms to solve problems. Their understanding and use of decimals and fractions are especially weak. Indeed, helping all children succeed in mathematics is an imperative national goal. However, for our youth to succeed, we need to change how we're teaching this discipline. Helping Children Learn Mathematics provides comprehensive and reliable information that will guide efforts to improve school mathematics from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The authors explain the five strands of mathematical proficiency and discuss the major changes that need to be made in mathematics instruction, instructional materials, assessments, teacher education, and the broader educational system and answers some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to mathematics instruction. The book concludes by providing recommended actions for parents and caregivers, teachers, administrators, and policy makers, stressing the importance that everyone work together to ensure a mathematically literate society.
