Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems always involves the introduction of mathematical concepts. It is important, therefore, for any systems designer to have a good grasp of the mathematical bases used in CAD. The choice of mathematical models in a system also has an effect on the overall quality, although this effect may not always be visible to the final user. Depending on whether Bezier or B-spline functions are used for curves and surfaces, for example, the final user even if not a com puter scientist will notice a difference. If, for example, one of the control points is modified by the user, in a Bezier-type representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified overall, but in a B-spline representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified close to the point, and there only. More possibly harmful, however, is the effect of the mathematical model which has a number of properties invisible and unknown to the final user. In every case a model must be chosen with, it is hoped, the most appropriate characteristics and limits for the task in hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textbook provides both beginner and experienced CAD users with the math behind the CAD. The geometry tools introduced here help the reader exploit commercial CAD software to its fullest extent. In fact, the book enables the reader to go beyond what CAD software packages offer in their menus. Chapter 1 summarizes the basic Linear and Vector Algebra pertinent to vectors in 3D, with some novelties: the 2D form of the vector product and the manipulation of “larger" matrices and vectors by means of block-partitioning of larger arrays. In chapter 2 the relations among points, lines and curves in the plane are revised accordingly; the difference between curves representing functions and their geometric counterparts is emphasized. Geometric objects in 3D, namely, points, planes, lines and surfaces are the subject of chapter 3; of the latter, only quadrics are studied, to keep the discussion at an elementary level, but the interested reader is guided to the literature on splines. The concept of affine transformations, at the core of CAD software, is introduced in chapter 4, which includes applications of these transformations to the synthesis of curves and surfaces that would be extremely cumbersome to produce otherwise. The book, catering to various disciplines such as engineering, graphic design, animation and architecture, is kept discipline-independent, while including examples of interest to the various disciplines. Furthermore, the book can be an invaluable complement to undergraduate lectures on CAD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems always involves the introduction of mathematical concepts. It is important, therefore, for any systems designer to have a good grasp of the mathematical bases used in CAD. This book introduces mathematical bases in a general way, so as to allow the reader to understand the basic tools. Based on the-work of leading French researchers, it gives a clear outline of the mathematical concepts employed in setting up a CAD system that uses interactive graphic techniques. It deals thoroughly with basic graphics, two- and three-dimensional operations, as well as considering mathematical modeling in relation to geometric modeling. It also examines curves and surfaces, numerical methods of solving equations and finite element modeling, one of the many CAD design tools available today. Contents:Part 1: Basic Problems Using Graphics. Part 2: Curves and Surfaces. Part 3: Numerical Methods for Solving Equation Systems. Part 4: The Finite Element Model. Yvon Gardan, who is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Metz, is a wellknown authority on interactive graphic techniques, and is the author of Interactive Graphics in CAD. He is also director of the CADCAM Association of France (MICADO).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Aided Geometric Design covers the proceedings of the First International Conference on Computer Aided Geometric Design, held at the University of Utah on March 18-21, 1974. This book is composed of 15 chapters and starts with reviews of the properties of surface patch equation and the use of computers in geometrical design. The next chapters deal with the principles of smooth interpolation over triangles and without twist constraints, as well as the graphical representation of surfaces over triangles and rectangles. These topics are followed by discussions of the B-spline curves and surfaces; mathematical and practical possibilities of UNISURF; nonlinear splines; and some piecewise polynomial alternatives to splines under tension. Other chapters explore the smooth parametric surfaces, the space curve as a folded edge, and the interactive computer graphics application of the parametric bi-cubic surface to engineering design problems. The final chapters look into the three-dimensional human-machine communication and a class of local interpolating splines. This book will prove useful to design engineers.

Book excerpt: This entertaining introduction to advanced numerical modeling aims to lead the reader on a journey towards theholy grail of numerical simulation, i.e. one without the requirement of mesh generation, that takes data directly from CAD programs. This hands-on book emphasizes implementation and examples of programming in a higher level language are given. Written for users of simulation software, so they can understand the benefits of this new technology and demand progress from a somewhat conservative industry. Written for software developers, so they can see that this is a technology with a big future and written for researchers, in the hope that it will attract more people to work in this field.
