The world over, rural schools generally get short shrift in the allocation of resources and prestige, their lack of urbanness often a self-fulfilling indicator of deficiency. As a result perhaps, rural students may perform, on average, less well than others in terms of the expectations and needs of parents and communities as well as on standard measures of achievement. Though every country has rural schools schools that are often identified as troubled, little research has examined rural schooling across nations. How do rural students perform relative to their non-rural counterparts? Are patterns of achievement by rural students consistent across countries? Of particular interest are the poor. How well do poor rural students perform relative to other groups of students? How big a role do family characteristics play in conditioning academic performance in rural areas? What are the value and the values of rural education? Such questions are especially salient for mathematics, for mathematics competence is essential to full participation in the economic, political and social life of the community and the nation.

Book excerpt: This empirical study examines the impact of AI-driven personalized learning platforms on mathematics achievement and student engagement among middle school students in rural and urban schools in Karnataka, India. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 400 students (200 rural, 200 urban), split into control and experimental groups. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted using standardized mathematics tests, engagement surveys, classroom observations, and AI platform analytics. Results showed significant improvements in post-test scores for the experimental groups using AI platforms compared to control groups in both settings (p < 0.001). Specifically, rural experimental group scores improved from a pre-test mean of 62.5 to a post-test mean of 78.3, while urban experimental group scores increased from 68.2 to 83.9. Engagement levels were also higher in experimental groups, with rural students scoring 78.5 on engagement surveys compared to 65.2 in the control group, and urban students scoring 82.1 compared to 69.8. However, rural schools reported greater challenges in implementation, including inadequate internet connectivity (78% vs. 32%, p < 0.001) and lack of devices (65% vs. 28%, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that while AI-driven platforms significantly enhance educational outcomes, tailored strategies are necessary to address the distinct challenges faced by rural schools. Recommendations include improving rural infrastructure, expanding teacher training, and fostering supportive environments to maximize the benefits of AI-driven personalized learning.

Purposeful criterion sampling was used to select 13 teachers and school leaders from two rural schools in Western New York. Data was collected through a survey, teacher interviews, and school leader interviews. The data was triangulated and analyzed using open coding, categorical aggregation, and a cross-case synthesis to identify five themes relating to the research questions across multiple sources. The five themes included building strong relationships, social-emotional learning, empowering leadership, differentiation, and positive reinforcement. The results of the study revealed teachers and school leaders perceived school climate domains (engagement, safety, environment) affect student achievement in math and reading at rural schools.

Forty-five countries collected data in more than 30 languages. Five grade levels were tested in the two subject areas, so that more than half a million students were tested around the world. This report addresses middle-school mathematics achievement (grades seven and eight) in six content areas: (1) fractions and number sense; (2) measurement; (3) proportionality; (4) data representation, analysis, and probability; (5) geometry; and (6) algebra. Results cover 41 countries with complete data collection. Singapore was the top-performing country at both grade levels, with Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong also performing very well. There were large differences in average achievement between top performers and bottom performing nations. Gender differences in mathematics achievement were small or nearly nonexistent in most countries, but when they did appear, they favored boys. In nearly every country there was a strong positive relationship between student enjoyment of mathematics and higher achievement. Home factors were strongly related to mathematics achievement in every participating country, but relationships between instructional variables and achievement were less clear. In every country, the pattern was for the eighth grade student whose parents had more education to also have higher achievement in mathematics. The amount of television viewing was negatively associated with mathematics achievement.
