Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this book have been in charge of over thirty industrial contracts of various length (from six months to three years); the companies involved covered a wide range of industrial activities, including steel making, hot and cold rolling, aerospace research, automobile manufactur ing, chemical manufacturing, coal mining, bronze casting, and mechanical engineering. All contracts were related to problems connected either with the preliminary design of production systems or with the management of these systems. The problems that the authors investigated involved not only designing and scheduling, but also the modeling, analysis, and evalua tion of production systems. The book is based to a large extent on the experience gained in working on these contracts and the mathematical procedures presented are those that have been applied during the course of work on at least one of the contracts. Moreover, the authors have always kept in mind an idea which seems pivotal in the world of industry: the difficulty in companies lies much more in determining the exact nature of a problem and defining the criteria to be taken into account, than in solving the problem itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the mathematical models applicable to manufacturing systems management, covering problems from production to real time control. It explores manufacturing systems from the viewpoints of both physical structure and performance measures. Two broad classes of mathematical models are covered in detail: Generative models, which yield a set of decision variables optimizing a performance measure, based on mathematical optimization Evaluative models, which evaluate some performance measures as a function of some predefined decision strategy. Within this class Petri Nets and Queueing Networks are discussed. Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management describes dynamic systems modeling by state equations, a unifying framework for a wide variety of models. The text/reference stresses model building, but it examines model solving as well. Computational techniques are illustrated, such as linear programming, branch and bound methods, and dynamic programming. Particular emphasis is given to the development of heuristic methods from mathematical models. The book provides readers with valuable tools for management and design. The use of descriptive models within an optimization algorithm is considered. Numerous examples illustrate theoretical concepts throughout text. Appendices are given at the end of the book in order to recall fundamentals, such as linear programming and graph theory. Appendices also appear within each chapter. In this way, readers can follow the main reading path without getting involved with details; these appendices can be read at a later time. This textual structure makes this book particularly well suited for self-study. Advanced Models for Manufacturing Systems Management is beneficial reading for both students and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Mathematical Tools for Changing Scale in the Analysis of Physical Systems presents a new systematic approach to changing the spatial scale of the differential equations describing science and engineering problems. It defines vectors, tensors, and differential operators in arbitrary orthogonal coordinate systems without resorting to conceptually difficult Riemmann-Christoffel tensor and contravariant and covariant base vectors. It reveals the usefulness of generalized functions for indicating curvilineal, surficial, or spatial regions of integration and for transforming among these integration regions. These powerful mathematical tools are harnessed to provide 128 theorems in tabular format (most not previously available in the literature) that transform time-derivative and del operators of a function at one scale to the corresponding operators acting on the function at a larger scale. Mathematical Tools for Changing Scale in the Analysis of Physical Systems also provides sample applications of the theorems to obtain continuum balance relations for arbitrary surfaces, multiphase systems, and problems of reduced dimensionality. The mathematical techniques and tabulated theorems ensure the book will be an invaluable analysis tool for practitioners and researchers studying balance equations for systems encountered in the fields of hydraulics, hydrology, porous media physics, structural analysis, chemical transport, heat transfer, and continuum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventory control is an essential task in production management. An effective inventory control can significantly reduce the holding cost and hence, total production cost. Selecting and implementing a suitable production control system plays an important role in inventory reduction and performance improvement of a production system. Since the introduction of Toyota’s just-in-time philosophy, pull control systems have been adopted by numerous companies worldwide, both in the manufacturing and service sectors. This book provides some recent developments in production management and presents modeling and analysis tools for pull production control systems. It contributes by combining theoretical findings and case study analysis results with a practical and contemporary view on how to effectively manage and control production systems. Each chapter in this book focuses on a specific topic in production control systems, allowing readers to identify the chapters that relate to their interests. More specifically, the book is presented in three sections. The first section focuses on the design and implementation aspects of the pull production control systems, as well as performance evaluation approaches for pull systems. The second section presents a recent and comprehensive literature review. Three different case studies on implementation of pull production control systems are presented in the last section. This book can be used as an essential source for students and scholars who need to specifically study the pull control systems. Since the superiority of these systems is controversial, the book can also provide an interesting and informative read for practitioners, managers, and employees who need to deepen their knowledge on pull production management systems.

Book excerpt: This second edition of the classic textbook has been written to provide a completely up-to-date text for students of mechanical, industrial, manufacturing and production engineering, and is an indispensable reference for professional industrial engineers and managers. In his outstanding book, Professor Katsundo Hitomi integrates three key themes into the text: * manufacturing technology * production management * industrial economics Manufacturing technology is concerned with the flow of materials from the acquisition of raw materials, through conversion in the workshop to the shipping of finished goods to the customer. Production management deals with the flow of information, by which the flow of materials is managed efficiently, through planning and control techniques. Industrial economics focuses on the flow of production costs, aiming to minimise these to facilitate competitive pricing. Professor Hitomi argues that the fundamental purpose of manufacturing is to create tangible goods, and it has a tradition dating back to the prehistoric toolmakers. The fundamental importance of manufacturing is that it facilitates basic existence, it creates wealth, and it contributes to human happiness - manufacturing matters. Nowadays we regard manufacturing as operating in these other contexts, beyond the technological. It is in this unique synthesis that Professor Hitomi's study constitutes a new discipline: manufacturing systems engineering - a system that will promote manufacturing excellence. Key Features: * The classic textbook in manufacturing engineering * Fully revised edition providing a modern introduction to manufacturing technology, production managment and industrial economics * Includes review questions and problems for the student reader
