Book excerpt: The objective of this publication is to comprehensively discuss the possibilities of producing steels with pre-determined attributes, demanded by the customer to fit exacting specifications. The information presented in the book has been designed to indicate the reasons for the expenses and to aid in the process of overcoming the difficulties and reducing the costs. In nine detailed chapters, the authors cover topics including: • steel as a major contributor to the economic wealth of a country in terms of its capabilities and production • current concerns of major steel producers • phenomena contributing to the quality of the product • information concerning the boundary conditions of the rolling process and initial conditions, put to use by mathematical models • the solid state incremental approach and flow formulation • parameters and variables - most of which make use of the exponential nature of phenomena that are activated by thermal energy • the application of three dimensional analysis to shape rolling • the evaluation of parameters by a form of inverse analysis to the flat rolling process • knowledge based modeling, using artificial intelligence, expert systems and neural networks They conclude that when either mathematical or physical modeling of the rolling process is considered and the aim is to satisfy the demands for customers, it is possible to produce what the customer wants, exactly.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of cross-sectional temperature in slab (strip), work rolls and thermal crown of work rolls during hot flat rolling is investigated. For solving the Fourier differential equation for two-dimensional transient heat conduction with internal heat source a simple implicite finite difference method is used. The mathematical model for temperature evolution in slab is tested by comparing its predictions of surface temperature to measured ones of industrial hot flat rolling of aluminium on two-high reversing rolling mill.

This book emphasizes the importance of mathematical simulation of this process in the light of the ever in- creasing need for quality improvements through automation. Mathematical models of the hot, warm and cold rolling processes are discussed, compared and critically evaluated. Engineers in the steel industry will find this book particularly useful in their everyday work.

The basic principle involved in heat treatment is the process of heating and cooling. The industrial process of case hardening aims to harden just the workpiece case, letting the inner part softer. The macrosopical model presented here takes into account the diffusion of carbon in the workpiece at austenitic phase, the slow diffusion at high temperature and the rapid cooling, which produces the formation of the martensitic microstructure. During this process, phase transformations in steel take place, influenced by the non homogeneous carbon distribution. The mathematical model presented here consists of a nonlinear evolution equation for the temperature, coupled with a nonlinear evolution equation for the carbon concentration, both coupled with two ordinary differential equations describing the evolution of phase fractions. Existence and uniqueness of solutions are investigated and some numerical simulations are presented.
