Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a sequel to an earlier volume entitled "A Theory of Supercritical Wing Sections, with Computer Programs and Examples." Since the completion of the first volume, which we shall refer to as Volume I (cf. [ll), some effort has been made to improve our airfoil design program. A number of more desirable air foils have been designed. In addition several of our wing sections have been tested in wind tunnels. We should like to make this material available here, since it is more convenient to use the design program in conjunction with data for a fairly broad range of examples. Moreover, we have developed new analysis programs that supersede our previous work. Chapter I is devoted to a brief discussion of the mathematics involved in our additions and modifications. There is only a mini mum emphasis on theory, since the representation of important physical phenomena such as boundary layer shock wave interaction and separation is partly empirical. It is our contention, however, that the computer programs provide a better simulation than might have been expected. Chapter II presents numerical results found by our new methods, as well as comparisons with experimental data. Chapter III contains a discussion of the use of the program together with Fortran listings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whole picture of Mathematical Modeling is systematically and thoroughly explained in this text for undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics, engineering, economics, finance, biology, chemistry, and physics. This textbook gives an overview of the spectrum of modeling techniques, deterministic and stochastic methods, and first-principle and empirical solutions. Complete range: The text continuously covers the complete range of basic modeling techniques: it provides a consistent transition from simple algebraic analysis methods to simulation methods used for research. Such an overview of the spectrum of modeling techniques is very helpful for the understanding of how a research problem considered can be appropriately addressed. Complete methods: Real-world processes always involve uncertainty, and the consideration of randomness is often relevant. Many students know deterministic methods, but they do hardly have access to stochastic methods, which are described in advanced textbooks on probability theory. The book develops consistently both deterministic and stochastic methods. In particular, it shows how deterministic methods are generalized by stochastic methods. Complete solutions: A variety of empirical approximations is often available for the modeling of processes. The question of which assumption is valid under certain conditions is clearly relevant. The book provides a bridge between empirical modeling and first-principle methods: it explains how the principles of modeling can be used to explain the validity of empirical assumptions. The basic features of micro-scale and macro-scale modeling are discussed – which is an important problem of current research.
Book Synopsis Computation of the Transonic Flow about a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle (Classic Reprint) by : D. Ross

This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Computation of the Transonic Flow About a Swept Wing in the Presence of an Engine Nacelle A principal goal of computational transonic aerodynamics is to develop computa tional methods for the analysis of transonic flows and for the design of efficient transonic air craft. We are interested in particular in the problem of designing wings with only weak shocks at a given Mach number and angle of attack. Methods, which we shall describe below, exist for the design of shockless transonic airfoils and for computing the transonic flow about a given wing. One approach to the design of a low drag transonic swept wing is to start with a shockiess airfoil in each wing section. Three-dimensional effects will cause shocks on such a wing, but we expect them not to be too severe. By small readjustments of the wing surface, which can be made by a code which treats the wing surface as a free boun dary, we can redesign the wing to reduce the strength of the shocks. Our method takes this program one step further. If an obstacle, such as an engine nacelle, is placed in the flow near an almost shockless wing, sizeable shocks can be expected to appear on the wing. We have incorporated a model of such an obstacle into the free boundary design code of Bauer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Separated and Vortical Flow in Aircraft Wing Aerodynamics by : Ernst Heinrich Hirschel
Download or read book Separated and Vortical Flow in Aircraft Wing Aerodynamics written by Ernst Heinrich Hirschel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-04 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanical aspects of separated and vortical flow in aircraft wing aerodynamics are treated. The focus is on two wing classes: (1) large aspect-ratio wings and (2) small aspect-ratio delta-type wings. Aerodynamic design issues in general are not dealt with. Discrete numerical simulation methods play a progressively larger role in aircraft design and development. Accordingly, in the introduction to the book the different mathematical models are considered, which underlie the aerodynamic computation methods (panel methods, RANS and scale-resolving methods). Special methods are the Euler methods, which as rather inexpensive methods embrace compressibility effects and also permit to describe lifting-wing flow. The concept of the kinematically active and inactive vorticity content of shear layers gives insight into many flow phenomena, but also, with the second break of symmetry---the first one is due to the Kutta condition---an explanation of lifting-wing flow fields. The prerequisite is an extended definition of separation: “flow-off separation” at sharp trailing edges of class (1) wings and at sharp leading edges of class (2) wings. The vorticity-content concept, with a compatibility condition for flow-off separation at sharp edges, permits to understand the properties of the evolving trailing vortex layer and the resulting pair of trailing vortices of class (1) wings. The concept also shows that Euler methods at sharp delta or strake leading edges of class (2) wings can give reliable results. Three main topics are treated: 1) Basic Principles are considered first: boundary-layer flow, vortex theory, the vorticity content of shear layers, Euler solutions for lifting wings, the Kutta condition in reality and the topology of skin-friction and velocity fields. 2) Unit Problems treat isolated flow phenomena of the two wing classes. Capabilities of panel and Euler methods are investigated. One Unit Problem is the flow past the wing of the NASA Common Research Model. Other Unit Problems concern the lee-side vortex system appearing at the Vortex-Flow Experiment 1 and 2 sharp- and blunt-edged delta configurations, at a delta wing with partly round leading edges, and also at the Blunt Delta Wing at hypersonic speed. 3) Selected Flow Problems of the two wing classes. In short sections practical design problems are discussed. The treatment of flow past fuselages, although desirable, was not possible in the frame of this book.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling of Unsteady Inviscid Flows by : Jeff D. Eldredge
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling of Unsteady Inviscid Flows written by Jeff D. Eldredge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book builds inviscid flow analysis from an undergraduate-level treatment of potential flow to the level required for research. The tools covered in this book allow the reader to develop physics-based mathematical models for a variety of flows, including attached and separated flows past wings, fins, and blades of various shapes undergoing arbitrary motions. The book covers all of the ingredients of these models: the solution of potential flows about arbitrary body shapes in two- and three-dimensional contexts, with a particular focus on conformal mapping in the plane; the decomposition of the flow into contributions from ambient vorticity and body motion; generalized edge conditions, of which the Kutta condition is a special case; and the calculation of force and moment, with extensive treatments of added mass and the influence of fluid vorticity. The book also contains an extensive primer with all of the necessary mathematical tools. The concepts are demonstrated on several example problems, both classical and modern.
