Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling of unsteady state photopolymerization in an isothermal batch reactor has been investigated. An analytical solution of the distribution of active polymers as a function of reaction time has been determined. It is verified that the quasi-stationary state approximation is valid in the photopolymerization process. The free radical polymerization of styrene is forced periodically by on-off UV light regulation to the reactor. The effect of operating condition, the ratio of light-off period to light on/off period, on the polydispersity and molecular weight distribution are theoretically and numerically investigated. Significant broadening on molecular weight distribution can be obtained during the unsteady state process. Experimental results of polydispersity are compared to a kinetic model of a nonuniformly initiated photopolymerization, which comprises a high dose rate region and a very low dose rate region. Good agreement is obtained between the model and experiments after fitting three parameters.

Book excerpt: Stereolithography is a method which produces any object of complex geometry with desired qualities from its computer aided design. The production in stereolithography method is realized by the free-radical photopolymerization reaction. Therefore, a computer controlled ultraviolet (UV) light source is used to turn a liquid resin into a solid object of desired geometry in relatively short time. This method is rapidly growing into a multibillion dollar industry with applications in many fields such as electronics, medicine, aerospace, and transportation. However, the photopolymerization as the fundamental process of stereolithography production is not yet well understood. For this reason it is continuing to be an interesting active research subject today .The main purpose of this study is to develop mathematical models to contribute to the understanding of the reaction kinetics of the photopolymerization process and to make reliable simulations ofthe process. For this purpose, the first model was developed by using a system of two-dimensional partial differential equations to describe the heat and mass transfer effects in addition to the basic polymerization reactions: initiation, propagation, termination, and inhibition. The second model used one-dimensional coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations describing the change in the concentration of various polymeric species in the reaction volume. The rate constants used for the termination reactions in this model is determined by considering the chain-length of the polymeric species . involved in the reactions. The effects of the free volume and the diffusion on the reaction kinetics in this model are taken into account via both the propagation and termination rate constants. In experiments conducted in stereolithography , the resin was prepared from four functional ethoxylated pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (SR494) monomer mixing with high absorbance capacity photoinitiator molecule of 2% by weight. The liquid resin surface was illuminated by the uv light source moving under the control of the computer in experiments conducted in stereolithography apparatus and the change in the dimensions ofthe solid objects produced with different uv light scanning speeds were measured. The dimensions ofthese solid objects were calculated by solving the model based on the two-dimensional partial differential equations and the results found were determined to be in good agreement with the experimental results. Gelation point in photopolymerization process is referred to as the point where the liquid resin begins to cure or solidify , causing the resin viscosity to increase rapidly . The time elapses for the photopolymerization process to reach to this point is called the gelation time. The determination of the gelation time is very important for productions using stereolithography technique. In this study , the effects of the resin type, the concentration of photoinitiator, and the properties of uv light (wavelength.

Book excerpt: Stereolithography (SL) is a method which produces any object of complex geometry with desired qualities from its computer aided design and the production is realized by the free-radical photopolymerization reaction. The photopolymerization as the fundamental process of SL production is not yet well understood. The main purpose of this study is to develop mathematical models to contribute to the understanding of the reaction kinetics of the photopolymerization process and to make reliable simulations of the process. The first model was developed by using a system of 2D partial differential equations to describe the heat and mass transfer effects in addition to the basic polymerization reactions. The second model used 1D coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations describing the change in the concentration of various polymeric species in the reaction volume. The new third model is based on the stochastic Monte Carlo approach in order to account for the inherently random and discrete nature of the photopolymerization reactions. The simulations of the results obtained from the experiments conducted compared with all models.

Book Synopsis A Mathematical Model of Photopolymerization in a Batch Reactor by : Jyh-Yao Li
Download or read book A Mathematical Model of Photopolymerization in a Batch Reactor written by Jyh-Yao Li and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model of a photo initiated additionpolymerization in a batch reactor was developed. The model considered initiation, propagation and, termination to simulate the addition polymerization process, The model has the advantage that the concentration of any particular n-mer may be calculated without calculating all of its precursors. Other methods do not have this property. An analytical solution to the model for the photopolymerization of styrene was solved. The calculations were run on a VAX 8800 computer and the results were then compared with the experimental results. The calculated results fitted the experimental results to some extent. Effects from the variations of feed temperatures and light intensities were also discussed, the model predicted their influence very well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of mathematical modelling and numerical simulation is generally accepted as the third mode of scienti?c discovery (with the other two modes being experiment and analysis), making this ?eld an integral component of c- ting edge scienti?c and industrial research in most domains. This is especially so in advanced biomaterials such as polymeric hydrogels responsive to biostimuli for a wide range of potential BioMEMS applications, where multiphysics and mul- phase are common requirements. These environmental stimuli-responsive hydrogels are often known as smart hydrogels. In the published studies on the smart or stimu- responsive hydrogels, the literature search clearly indicates that the vast majority are experimental based. In particular, although there are a few published books on the smart hydrogels, none is involved in the modelling of smart hydrogels. For the few published journal papers that conducted mathematical modelling and numerical simulation, results were far from satisfactory, and showed signi?cant d- crepancies when compared with existing experimental data. This has resulted in ad hoc studies of these hydrogel materials mainly conducted by trial and error. This is a very time-consuming and inef?cient process, and certain aspects of fun- mental knowledge are often missed or overlooked, resulting in off-tangent research directions.
