Book excerpt: A considerable number of modeling studies for the investigation of sulfur retention in atmospheric bubbling fluidized bed combustors have been carried out and well documented in the literature. Despite 30 years of intensive study of sulfation process in fluidized bed combustors and numerous laboratory studies, there are still many uncertainties and disagreements on the subject. In addition, modeling sulfur retention performance of Turkish lignites with high sulfur, volatile matter and ash contents has not drawn much attention to date. Recent trend in utilization of indigenous lignites in fluidized bed boilers necessitated investigation of pollutant emissions and adaptation of fluidized bed combustion technology to these lignites. In an attempt to achieve this objective, a system model, previously developed and tested for the prediction of the combustion behavior of fluidized bed combustors was extended to incorporate sulfur retention. The predictive accuracy of the model was assessed by applying it to the prediction of the behavior of METU 0.3 MWt ABFBC test rig burning indigenous lignites in their own ashes, and comparing its predictions with measurements taken on the same rig. Sulfur dioxide concentration predictions throughout the combustor were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data except for the small discrepancy between predictions and measurements in the bed section. Measurements and model predictions revealed that recyling enhances calcium utilization significantly by increasing the sorbent residence time leading to higher sulfur retention efficiencies. The system model proposed in this study proves to be a useful tool in qualitatively and quantitatively simulating the processes taking place in an atmospheric fluidized bed combustor.

Book excerpt: The use of fluidized bed coal combustion technology has been developed in the past decade in The Netherlands with a view to expanding the industrial use of coal as an energy supply. Various research groups from universities, institutes for applied science and from boiler industries participated and contributed to this research area. Comprehensive results of such recent experimentation and development work on atmospheric fluidized bed combustion of coal are covered in this volume. Each chapter, written by an expert, treats one specific subject and gives both the theoretical background as well as experimental results and verifications. Though the contents deal primarily with coal combustion, much information proved applicable and relevant for the combustion or incineration of other solid fuels and waste in a fluidized bed. Results of extended research and fundamental backgrounds are presented in order to provide the designer and operator of fluidized bed combustors with more complete and systematic information needed for an optimal design and operation. The design and operating experience of a full scale fluidized bed boiler are discussed and compared with the results of theoretical and experimental research on pilot plant scale.

Book excerpt: Optimum design of fluidized-bed combustor requires high carbon burn-up, good sulfur retention, minimized sorbent (Ca) utilization, efficient feed distribution and mechanical layout. These parameters are strongly affected by the dynamics of the fluidized bed. The dynamic behavior of fluidized combustor is formulated in terms of multidomain - multiphase mechanics. Fluidization, bubble mechanics, coal combustion, sorbent sulfation, oxidation, solids movement and elutriation, and heat transfer are explicitly taken into account in the proposed numerical model. The model solves conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy coupled with chemical reactions as boundary value problem in space and initial value problem in time. Multi-fluid model and modified implicit multi-field numerical scheme are employed. The objective of this numerical model is for use in engineering design and scaling. Progress to date shows that all necessary relations can be incorporated within the framework of an overall multidomain - multiphase model for deterministic computation. Provisions are made for subsequent refinements of submodels of individual mechanism and improvements of the existing numerical model. These refinements and improvements can be achieved as better understanding of physical phenomena and more experimental data become available. The numerical model outlined in this report is specifically designed for the fluidized-bed combustor; however, it can readily be extended to various coal gasification systems.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute on "New Trends in Coal Science" which was held at Datca, HUgla, Turkey during August 23 - September 4, 1987. The book includes 23 chapters which were originally written for the meeting by some of the world's foremost investigators. Chemists everywhere are carrying out exciting research that has important implications for the energy and fuels industries and for society in general. For the near future, coal resources will continue to be of great importance and science and technology of the highest order are needed to extend this fossil energy resource and to utilize it in an economical way that is also environmentally acceptable. These were the main purposes for the organization of this NATO ASI. The Institute constituted two working weeks on structure and reactivity of coal and so is the book. Through the presentation of many specific recent results on structure and characterization of coal and its products the potential of new instrumental techniques is presented in the first part of the book. Finally the reactivity of coals at different conditions both in laboratory and industry is discussed. We hope that the volume will be of great use to research workers from academic and industrial background. In addition it could serve as a textbook for a graduate course on coal science and technology.

Book excerpt: This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France), April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems, flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their scientific quality, and language corrections may have been sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to prevail.

This book focuses on the design and operation of fluidized beds in many different industrial processes, emphasizing the rationale for choosing fluidized beds for each particular process. The book starts with a brief history of fluidization from its inception in the 1940’s. The authors present both the fluid dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds and the extensive experimental studies of operating systems and they set them in the context of operating processes that use fluid-bed reactors. Chemical engineering students and postdocs as well as practicing engineers will find great interest in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) is a new technique for combusting a wide variety of fuels. This has attracted attention of many researchers due to many advantages such as good turn down ratio, high combustion efficiency and efficient pollution control. In the present work, a generalised mathematical model has been developed for the combustion of char taking into account the formation of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide during combustion. The present model is a step further to the basic model given by BASU, SETT, GBORDZOE (1987) and improvements incorporated by DAS (1989) in the form of variable bed density along the combustor height. The model predicts the combustion efficiency, the concentration of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide in the flue gas, the exit particle size distribution and core carbon fraction along the combustor height. Modifications were performed on the existing pilot scale CFB combustor by incorporating and expansion joint to reduce thermal stress developed by unequal expansion between the main combustor and the return leg. The mathematical model has been validated by performing experiments on a CFB combustor using char as a fuel. Model predictions have been done by using the same conditions as the experimental conditions. The model predictions are in agreement with the experimental results. Experiments were conducted on fluidized bed combustion to study the combustion efficiency and the sulphur retention capability of quick lime and marblestone used as sorbent with Thai lignite. Results show that marblestone has a lower capability to retain sulphur than quick lime. The results of sulphur retention with quick lime are encouraging. About 91% of sulphur is retained from lignite in the bed. Combustion efficiency with high sulphur lignite on the FBC is more than 90%.

Book excerpt: Thermo-Hydrodynamic Design of Fluidized Bed Combustors: Estimating Metal Wastage is a unique volume that finds that the most sensitive parameters affecting metal wastage are superficial fluidizing velocity, particle diameter, and particle sphericity. Gross consistencies between disparate data sources using different techniques were found when the erosion rates are compared on the same basis using the concept of renormalization. The simplified mechanistic models and correlations, when validated, can be used to renormalize any experimental data so they can be compared on a consistent basis using a master equation.
