Little is known about just how much pollution is deposited onto soils, lakes and streams. To determine the extent and trends of forest exposure to air pollution, various types of monitoring have been conducted. In this study, we evaluate data from different rural air monitoring programs to determine whether or not they may have wider applications in resource monitoring and protection. This report analyzes location-specific data collected by three national programs: The CASTNET (NDDN) Network supported by the Environmental Protection Agency, the IMPROVE (Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments) network supported by federal land managers, and the NADP/NTN program supported by many agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this dissertation is analyzing ozone flux to a ponderosa pine plantation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and its controlling factors. Climate was found to have a major impact on ozone deposition. The relationship of the climate variables with ozone deposition was found to be dynamic and to change with phenology and water status. Consequently, concentration based metrics proved inadequate to protect tree health because actual ozone does to trees was controlled by many factors in addition to concentration. A strong seasonality on ozone deposition was observed. Cumulative ozone flux was found to be higher in the summer than any other individual season by the majority of the total ozone deposited to this system occurred in non summer months. The transpiration study showed that strong coupling between the leaf surface and airstream and a low threshold for stomatal closure caused transpiration and canopy conductance to be limited on an hourly basis but allowed the trees to remain active all summer.--Adapted from abstract.

Book excerpt: At the end of the 1970s, when signs of destabilization of forests became visible in Eu rope on a large scale, it soon became obvious that the syndrome called "forest de cline" was caused by a network of interrelated factors of abiotic and biotic origin. All attempts to explain the wide-spread syndrome by a single cause, and there were many of them, failed or can only be regarded as a single mosaic stone in the network of caus es behind the phenomenon. Forest ecosystems are highly complex natural or quasi natural systems, which exhibit different structures and functions and as a conse quence different resilience to internal or external stresses. Moreover, forest ecosys tems have a long history, which means that former impacts may act as predisposing factors for other stresses. The complexity and the different history of forest ecosys tems are two reasons that make it difficult to assess the actual state and future devel opment of forests. But there are two other reasons: one is the large time scale in which forests react, the other is the idiosyncrasy of the reactions on different sites. Due to the slow reaction and the regional complexity of the abiotic environment of forest ecosys tems, a profound analysis of each site and region is necessary to identify the underly ing causes and driving forces when attempting to overcome the destruction of forest ecosystems.
