Book excerpt: Nowadays there is an increasing emphasis on all aspects of adaptively gener ating a grid that evolves with the solution of a PDE. Another challenge is to develop efficient higher-order one-step integration methods which can handle very stiff equations and which allow us to accommodate a spatial grid in each time step without any specific difficulties. In this monograph a combination of both error-controlled grid refinement and one-step methods of Rosenbrock-type is presented. It is my intention to impart the beauty and complexity found in the theoretical investigation of the adaptive algorithm proposed here, in its realization and in solving non-trivial complex problems. I hope that this method will find many more interesting applications. Berlin-Dahlem, May 2000 Jens Lang Acknowledgements I have looked forward to writing this section since it is a pleasure for me to thank all friends who made this work possible and provided valuable input. I would like to express my gratitude to Peter Deuflhard for giving me the oppor tunity to work in the field of Scientific Computing. I have benefited immensly from his help to get the right perspectives, and from his continuous encourage ment and support over several years. He certainly will forgive me the use of Rosenbrock methods rather than extrapolation methods to integrate in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a generic approach to model the use and adaptation of mental models, including the control over this. In their mental processes, humans often make use of internal mental models as a kind of blueprints for processes that can take place in the world or in other persons. By internal mental simulation of such a mental model in their brain, they can predict and be prepared for what can happen in the future. Usually, mental models are adaptive: they can be learned, refined, revised, or forgotten, for example. Although there is a huge literature on mental models in various disciplines, a systematic account of how to model them computationally in a transparent manner is lacking. This approach allows for computational modeling of humans using mental models without a need for any algorithmic or programming skills, allowing for focus on the process of conceptualizing, modeling, and simulating complex, real-world mental processes and behaviors. The book is suitable for and is used as course material for multidisciplinary Master and Ph.D. students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of adaptive control is concerned with construction of strategies so that the controlled system behaves in a desirable way, without assuming the complete knowledge of the system. The models considered in this comprehensive book are of Markovian type. Both partial observation and partial information cases are analyzed. While the book focuses on discrete time models, continuous time ones are considered in the final chapter. The book provides a novel perspective by summarizing results on adaptive control obtained in the Soviet Union, which are not well known in the West. Comments on the interplay between the Russian and Western methods are also included.

Book excerpt: Integrates rational approximation with adaptive filtering, providing viable, numerically reliable procedures for creating adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. The choice of filter structure to adapt, algorithm design and the approximation properties for each type of algorithm are also addressed. This work recasts the theory of adaptive IIR filters by concentrating on recursive lattice filters, freeing systems from the need for direct-form filters.;A solutions manual is available for instructors only. College or university bookstores may order five or more copies at a special student price which is available upon request.

Book excerpt: The objective of the EU Nonlinear Control Network Workshop was to bring together scientists who are already active in nonlinear control and young researchers working in this field. This book presents selectively invited contributions from the workshop, some describing state-of-the-art subjects that already have a status of maturity while others propose promising future directions in nonlinear control. Amongst others, following topics of nonlinear and adaptive control are included: adaptive and robust control, applications in physical systems, distributed parameter systems, disturbance attenuation, dynamic feedback, optimal control, sliding mode control, and tracking and motion planning.

Book excerpt: The first international symposium on mathematical foundations of the finite element method was held at the University of Maryland in 1973. During the last three decades there has been great progress in the theory and practice of solving partial differential equations, and research has extended in various directions. Full-scale nonlinear problems have come within the range of nu merical simulation. The importance of mathematical modeling and analysis in science and engineering is steadily increasing. In addition, new possibili ties of analysing the reliability of computations have appeared. Many other developments have occurred: these are only the most noteworthy. This book is the record of the proceedings of the International Sympo sium on Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation in Continuum Mechanics, held in Yamaguchi, Japan from 29 September to 3 October 2000. The topics covered by the symposium ranged from solids to fluids, and in cluded both mathematical and computational analysis of phenomena and algorithms. Twenty-one invited talks were delivered at the symposium. This volume includes almost all of them, and expresses aspects of the progress mentioned above. All the papers were individually refereed. We hope that this volume will be a stepping-stone for further developments in this field.
