Book excerpt: In the second half of the eighteenth century, motherhood came to be viewed as women's most important social role, and the figure of the good mother was celebrated as a moral force in American society. Nora Doyle shows that depictions of motherhood in American culture began to define the ideal mother by her emotional and spiritual roles rather than by her physical work as a mother. As a result of this new vision, lower-class women and non-white women came to be excluded from the identity of the good mother because American culture defined them in terms of their physical labor. However, Doyle also shows that childbearing women contradicted the ideal of the disembodied mother in their personal accounts and instead perceived motherhood as fundamentally defined by the work of their bodies. Enslaved women were keenly aware that their reproductive bodies carried a literal price, while middle-class and elite white women dwelled on the physical sensations of childbearing and childrearing. Thus motherhood in this period was marked by tension between the lived experience of the maternal body and the increasingly ethereal vision of the ideal mother that permeated American print culture.

Book excerpt: Current literature regarding maternal role attainment and maternal identity has been based on findings generated from research conducted with mothers of full-term infants. Mothers of premature infants experience numerous and significant differences before, during and after the birth of their child, which may impact or alter the way in which they experience maternal role attainment or maternal identity development. This qualitative and exploratory study sought to compare preestablished theories of maternal role attainment and maternal identity to the experiences of mothers of premature infants. Twenty mothers of infants born prior to 37 weeks gestation were administered a semistructured interview as apart of a larger study addressing the emotional impact of parenting and premature infants. Responses were examined and found to concur with current theories of maternal role attainment and maternal identity. In addition to these findings, mothers of premature infants were also found to emphasize the emotional impact of specific events. These responses were examined and found to encompass four common themes: contact; decisions making and cognitive understanding; mastery of nontraditional caregiving tasks; and external recognition of maternal identity. A hypothetical conceptual framework regarding these responses and their significance is offered, suggesting these events may serve as triggers for the process of maternal role attainment.
