Book excerpt: On the dates of the 14th to the16th of November 1983, as part of its annual meeting in Boston, MA, the Materials Research society sponsored a symposium, Laser- Controlled Chemical Processing of Surfaces . The symposium was the Second Annual MRS event organized around the evolving field of materials processing by chemistry induced with laser radiation. This a field which is rapidly expanding to include a diverse variety of methods of activating or confining reaction for film deposition, etching, or doping of solid surfaces. The volume is organized according to the main topic areas of the symposium. The first section is devoted to laser-chemical-vapor-deposition reactions, driven thermally by pyrolysis or by dominantly thermal surface treatment. This includes reactions, variously termed LCVD and laser pyrolytic. A second section is structured around primarily photochemical or non-thermal photo deposition reactions. Electrochemistry driven by lasers is covered in the third section. The fourth section covers dry etching processes only. A fifth section includes papers from the expanding applications of laser methods for analysis of deposition and etching processes. In the sixth section, we include processes that are not easily classified within the preceding sections. A final section covers papers that are mainly analytic.

Surface processing of materials using laser, lamp or plasma is one of the most active fields of research in Europe and, as such, requires to be periodically reviewed at International Conference level. This year, the expanded surface processing symposium lasted for 3.5 days and, as an international forum, addressed not only fundamental questions in the field but also progress and new perspectives in various applications. The major subjects discussed during the meeting included fundamental process studies, modelling of growth mechanisms and surface modification, characterization of synthesised or modified materials, material modification at a nanometric scale, development of in-situ analytical techniques and applications towards device fabrication. About 200 papers were presented by some 120 participants.

The topics presented give recent results in organometallic chemistry and laser photochemistry, and novel surface characterization techniques. The ability to control the surface morphology by digital deposition and etching shows one of the future directions for exciting applications of laser surface processing, some of which may apply UV and VUV excitation. The understanding of elementary proceses is essential for the design of novel deposition methods, with diamond CVD being an outstanding example. The high quality of these contributions once again demonstrates that the E-MRS is an efficient forum for interaction between research workers and industry.
