Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Snow Carpenter (1922–2011), shaped by an early encounter with Marshall McLuhan, was a renegade anthropologist who would plumb the connection between anthropology and media studies over a thoroughly unconventional career. As co-conspirators in the founding of the legendary journal Explorations (1953–59), Carpenter and McLuhan established the groundwork for media studies. After ten years teaching anthropology at the University of Toronto, hosting radio and television shows on the CBC, and doing major research in the Arctic, Carpenter left Toronto and became an itinerant anthropologist. He took up a position in Papua New Guinea, where he countered anthropological practice by handing his camera to the Papuans. Carpenter’s marriage to the artist and heiress Adelaide de Menil made him a truly independent scholar. With the support of the Rock Foundation, founded by de Menil, he collected ethnographical art, curated exhibitions, and edited the materials for a twelve-volume study of social symbolism based on the massive archives created by Carl Schuster. Richard Cavell shows Carpenter – austere, generous, and unpredictable – to also be unwavering in working throughout his career within the framework established by Explorations. The anthropological impetus for media studies has largely been forgotten. This study restores that memory, tracing Carpenter’s work in media and in anthropology over a lifetime of cultural achievements and intellectual convolutions.

Book excerpt: Based on comprehensive research of textile arts and traditional symbolism, this compendium explores how societies, in the absence of writing, imparted wisdom to the next generation through the use of objects and practices of daily life, namely fiber arts—knotting, weaving, spinning, basketry, among others. Arguing that symbolism has been overshadowed by rationalism despite its continued existence in remote parts of the world, this unique record strives to examine these traditions and reunite them with their ancient meanings. This invaluable account will appeal to academics in the fields of anthropology, art history, and religion.

Book excerpt: 12. Vol. 3, Book 3 - Rebirth: The World Turned Upside Down The final book of the three volumes, Rebirth: The World Turned Upside Down deals with the mythic notion of inversion as a prelude to rebirth. This book includes perhaps the most subtle and complex arguments of the series, and synthesizes Carpenter's thoughts on the symbolism inherent in anthropomorphic compositions examined in the series. As with the other volumes, the initial sources are derived from visual data, lectures and papers written by Carl Schuster, although Carpenter presents the material with succinct clarity. Analyzing Paleolithic, Polynesian, Arctic and other inverted figures, the book posits that they depict female lineage, incorporating many of the concepts expressed throughout the prior volumes. The book concludes with appendices on Bi-lobed pendants, as well as the Notes, Sources and Bibliography relevant to Volume Three, and acknowledgments of other contributors to this exhaustive work.

Book excerpt: A companion to The Archaeology of Rock-Art (Cambridge 1998), this new collection edited by Christopher Chippindale and George Nash addresses the most important component around the rock-art panel - its landscape. The Figured Landscapes of Rock-Art draws together the work of many well-known scholars from key regions of the world for rock-art and for rock-art research. It provides a unique, broad and varied insight into the arrangement, location, and structure of rock-art and its place within the landscapes of ancient worlds as ancient people experienced them. Packed with illustrations, as befits a book about images, The Figured Landscapes of Rock-Art offers a visual as well as a literary key to the understanding of this most lovely and alluring of archaeological traces.
