Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of the cryogenic tunnel for aeronautical research lie mainly in the practical attainment of full-scale values of Reynolds numbers and in the case of pressurized cryogenic tunnels, the means to separate Mach number and Reynolds number effects from aeroelastic effects. There has been a subtle shift in interest away from some of the major concerns of 1980, e.g. real-gas effects, toward concerns more directly related to the application of cryogenic tunnels. The content of this present series of lectures has been selected to reflect this shift in interest. It has been demonstrated that large cryogenic tunnels can be built and sucessfully operated. We now ask, is it possible to build models for cryogenic tunnels, test them, and get data of sufficient accuracy so that the advantages of testing at full-scale values of Reynolds number are realized? This document addresses this question. It is specifically designed for those who wish to acquire in concentrated form the most up-to-date information on the principles and practices of cryogenic wind tunnel design, operation, and application. Following a brief review of the development and early application of cryogenic wind tunnels, all of the aspects of cryogenic wind tunnel technology related to the design and operation of cryogenic tunnels are examined. Among the areas covered are: cryogenic engineering and safety, properties of materials at cryogenic temperatures, model design requirements and fabrication techniques, instrumentation for control and data acquisition, data accuracy, productivity, and costs of models and operation.

Book excerpt: The use of cryogenic temperatures in wind tunnels to achieve high Reynolds numbers has imposed a harsh operating environment on the force balance. Laboratory tests were conducted to study the effect cryogenic temperatures have on balance materials, gages, wiring, solder, adhesives, and moisture proofing. Wind tunnel tests were conducted using a one piece three component balance to verify laboratory results. These initial studies indicate that satisfactory force data can be obtained under steady state conditions. Ferris, A. T. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-81845

Book excerpt: Wind Tunnel Test Techniques: Design and Use at Low and High Speeds with Statistical Engineering Applications provides an up-to-date treatment of the topic. Beginning with a brief history of wind tunnels and its types and uses, the book goes on to cover subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnel design and construction, calibration, boundary corrections, flow quality assessment, pressure surveys, and dynamic testing. It also focuses on wind tunnel facilities, making it useful for both the designer and operator. Engineers and graduate students in aerospace, automotive and similar programs will find this book useful in their work with experimental aerodynamics, gas dynamics, facility design and performance. Deals with a broad range of flow speeds in wind tunnels, from low speed to high speed Provides a discussion of similarity laws as well as material on statistical analysis Includes coverage on facility-to-facility and facility-to-CFD correlation Presents advanced topics such as cryogenic wind tunnels, ground simulation in automotive testing, and propulsion testing

Book excerpt: The criteria used to prevent failure of wind-tunnel models and support hardware were revised as part of a project to enhance the capabilities of cryogenic wind tunnel testing at NASA Langley Research Center. Specifically, damage-tolerance fatigue life prediction methods are now required for critical components, and material selection criteria are more general and based on laboratory test data. The suitability of two candidate model alloys (AerMet 100 and C-250 steel) was investigated by obtaining the fatigue crack growth and fracture data required for a damage-tolerance fatigue life analysis. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the newly implemented damage tolerance analyses required of wind-tunnel model system components.Newman, John A. and Forth, Scott C. and Everett, Richard A., Jr. and Newman, James C., Jr. and Kimmel, William M.Langley Research CenterCRACK PROPAGATION; CRYOGENIC WIND TUNNELS; CRACKING (FRACTURING); TOLERANCES (MECHANICS); WIND TUNNEL MODELS; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; FATIGUE (MATERIALS); CRYOGENICS; PREDICTION ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES; MARAGING STEELS

Book excerpt: For aeronautical research the advantages of the cryogenic wind tunnel lie mainly in the practical attainment of full scale values of Reynolds number, and in the case of pressurised cryogenic tunnels the means to separate Mach and Reynolds number effects from aeroelastic effects. This Lecture series is designed for engineers, including those experienced with conventional wind tunnels, wishing to acquire in a concentrated form the principles and practices of cryogenic wind tunnels. The emphasis is on the unfamiliar facets of technology which must be applied, and on solutions to special problems which arise from the exploitation of a low temperature test gas. The Lectures provide up-to-date information on the aerodynamic and mechanical design of continuous and intermittent cryogenic wind tunnels and their models, and on techniques for controlling test parameters. Design information includes properties of materials, the storage and handling of cryogenic liquids, insulation systems for pipelines and tunnel circuits, and safety requirements. Solutions are included for the special requirements of instrumentation systems for plant, tunnel, and model. The physical processes are described which determine the lower limits of operating temperature. The material in this publication was assembled to support a Lecture Series under the sponsorship of the Fluid Dynamics Panel, the Consultant and Exchange Programme of AGARD and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics.
