Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have enabled the production of small volume parts with complex geometries. However, the co-development of functional materials for AM processes remains the bottleneck for useful electromagnetic (EM) devices. This is especially true for radiofrequency (RF) and microwave devices, where the properties of the constituent materials, such as the relative permittivity, Îær, and relative permeability, Îơr, largely dictate part geometry, feature size, and performance at high frequencies. Commercially available feedstock materials for AM platforms are extremely limited in the scope of material property selection. This then limits the usefulness or practicality of manufactured devices where these materials are used. In this dissertation, I focus on several target areas of materials and process development to manipulate these critical properties for several AM platforms at high frequencies: (1) the formulation of flexible low- and high dielectric constant composite filaments, (2) the formulation of highly-loaded composite feedstock materials and methods of printing these materials, and (3) the ability to tune dielectric properties of printed ceramic structures. These recent advances enable practical designs of useful devices in the RF and microwave application space.
