Book Synopsis De Sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco in the Early Modern Period by : Matteo Valleriani
Download or read book De Sphaera of Johannes de Sacrobosco in the Early Modern Period written by Matteo Valleriani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores commentaries on an influential text of pre-Copernican astronomy in Europe. It features essays that take a close look at key intellectuals and how they engaged with the main ideas of this qualitative introduction to geocentric cosmology. Johannes de Sacrobosco compiled his Tractatus de sphaera during the thirteenth century in the frame of his teaching activities at the then recently founded University of Paris. It soon became a mandatory text all over Europe. As a result, a tradition of commentaries to the text was soon established and flourished until the second half of the 17th century. Here, readers will find an informative overview of these commentaries complete with a rich context. The essays explore the educational and social backgrounds of the writers. They also detail how their careers developed after the publication of their commentaries, the institutions and patrons they were affiliated with, what their agenda was, and whether and how they actually accomplished it. The editor of this collection considers these scientific commentaries as genuine scientific works. The contributors investigate them here not only in reference to the work on which it comments but also, and especially, as independent scientific contributions that are socially, institutionally, and intellectually contextualized around their authors.
Book Synopsis Tetragrammaton: Western Christians and the Hebrew Name of God by : Robert J. Wilkinson
Download or read book Tetragrammaton: Western Christians and the Hebrew Name of God written by Robert J. Wilkinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-04 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Reception of the Hebrew name of God has not previously been described in such detail and over such an extended period. This work places that varied reception within the context of early Jewish and Christian texts; Patristic Studies; Jewish-Christian relationships; Mediaeval thought; the Renaissance and Reformation; the History of Printing; and the development of Christian Hebraism. The contribution of notions of the Tetragrammaton to orthodox doctrines and debates is exposed, as is the contribution its study made to non-orthodox imaginative constructs and theologies. Gnostic, Kabbalistic, Hermetic and magical texts are given equally detailed consideration. There emerge from this sustained and detailed examination several recurring themes concerning the difficulty of naming God, his being and his providence.
Book Synopsis Aramaic Sources of Mark's Gospel by : Maurice Casey
Download or read book Aramaic Sources of Mark's Gospel written by Maurice Casey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 book was the first to use all the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls to reconstruct original Aramaic sources from parts of Mark's Gospel. The scrolls enabled the author to revolutionize the methodology of such work, and to reconstruct whole passages which he interpreted in their original cultural context. The passages from which sources are reconstructed are Mark 9.11-13; 2.23-3.6; 10.35-45; and 14.12-26. A detailed discussion of each passage is offered, demonstrating that these sources are completely accurate accounts from the ministry of Jesus, from early sabbath disputes to his final Passover. An account of the translation process is given, showing how problems in Mark's text arose from the difficulty of translating some Aramaic expressions into Greek, including the notoriously difficult 'son of man'. A very early date for these sources is proposed, implying a date of c. 40 CE for Mark's Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Merrick PhD has authored several translations including the Yahuah Bible and The Wisdom of Solomon in restored sacred name versions. This version of the rarely known Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew using the Spanish and Hebrew texts along with in depth study of the contextual structure of the book dating to 1380 CE having been copied from the only surviving copy of any Hebrew language Gospel. The Hebrew perspective of the roots of the Faith first begun in First Century Jerusalem lends the reader a new point of view on what truly the man Yahshua Messiah (Jesus) was teaching and how events actually happened. Shem Tov wrote his translation during the Inquisitions to debate for liberty to stay in Spain and remain Jewish there without persecution. Cover photo of Arch of Titus circa 70AD when the remnants of the tribes of Israel were taken captive to Rome along with the temple treasures and the Hebrew books and translations which disappeared and were replaced by only Greek texts which consist of most of the translated texts of the modern Bible. Dr Dan shows how Roman influences effected even Judaism in Europe which exposes what practices are truly from the first century Faith of Yahshua and his followers. Dan also appears on weekly broadcasts of FAITH RADIO heard on AM and FM stations world wide or at www.YahsSpace.org his online fellowship for Messianic Jews and Christians. Book Synopsis So Far from Allah, So Close to Mexico by : Theresa Alfaro-Velcamp
Download or read book So Far from Allah, So Close to Mexico written by Theresa Alfaro-Velcamp and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle Eastern immigration to Mexico is one of the intriguing, untold stories in the history of both regions. In So Far from Allah, So Close to Mexico, Theresa Alfaro-Velcamp presents the fascinating findings of her extensive fieldwork in Mexico as well as in Lebanon and Syria, which included comprehensive data collection from more than 8,000 original immigration cards as well as studies of decades of legal publications and the collection of historiographies from descendents of Middle Eastern immigrants living in Mexico today. Adding an important chapter to studies of the Arab diaspora, Alfaro-Velcamp's study shows that political instability in both Mexico and the Middle East kept many from fulfilling their dreams of returning to their countries of origin after realizing wealth in Mexico, in a few cases drawing on an imagined Phoenician past to create a class of economically powerful Lebanese Mexicans. She also explores the repercussions of xenophobia in Mexico, the effect of religious differences, and the impact of key events such as the Mexican Revolution. Challenging the post-revolutionary definitions of mexicanidad and exposing new aspects of the often contradictory attitudes of Mexicans toward foreigners, So Far from Allah, So Close to Mexico should spark timely dialogues regarding race and ethnicity, and the essence of Mexican citizenship.
