Book excerpt: Matchbox Theatre presents a sketch show in miniature: thirty short entertainments by Michael Frayn, author of Skios and Noises Off, 'the funniest farce ever written' (New York Times). Thirty snatches of people talking. To each other, to the world at large, to themselves, to no one. Heard, unheard. Overheard, half-heard. On telephones, into microphones. In a crypt, an airport, an orchestra pit. These tiny plays are offered here for performance in the smallest theatre in the world: the theatre of your own imagination. The scripts are provided. Everything else - casting, set design, ice cream sales - is up to you . . . 'Michael Frayn is the most philosophical comic writer - and the most comic philosophical writer - of our time.' Michael Arditti, Daily Mail

Book excerpt: In 1967, the fledgling, Bristol based, Saydisc label released its first country blues record, by Anderson Jones Jackson, with Noël Sheldon on jug. By 1968, it was helping Sunflower, Kokomo and Highway 51, three 'pop-up', independent, DIY blues labels, to get to market. These were mere toes in the water and in 1968 Saydisc created the celebrated Matchbox label to release contemporary, British country blues and LPs, transcribed from original 78s, of classic, pre-war, US country blues. Matchbox also pressed the popular, Austrian, Roots label for the UK market and, later, issued contemporary, American blues and transcriptions of Library of Congress recordings. Later again came the Bluesmaster Series. Saydisc released well over 100 blues LPs between 1967 and 1987, when it moved exclusively to CD. By 1968, blues was becoming increasingly popular in the UK, though the focus was mostly on electric blues bands. In July, however, Matchbox released the first LP of home-grown, British, country blues. The time was right and Blues Like Showers of Rain made a big stir. John Peel played it on his Nightride radio show and invited most of the artists up to London to record BBC sessions. The major labels picked up on the buzz and most of the artists were snapped up. Matchbox carried on the momentum over the next few years but eventually shut in July 1977. It returned in 1982 with the extremely well-received Bluesmaster Series, an ambitious undertaking that resulted in 38 LPs along with two 2-LP sets. Amongst other things, this book includes: - Information on every Saydisc-related, blues record released (and one that never saw light of day). - Images of all Saydisc's blues record sleeves. - Images of all Saydisc-related Sunflower, Kokomo, Highway 51 and Ahura Mazda record sleeves. - A cameo appearance by The Village Thing label, which represented 'what came after the blues'. - Memorabilia provided specially by the label owners and other archives/collections, much not seen in print since the 1960s and 1970s (if ever). - Active input from those who were there. - A section on Saydisc's hook-ups with Blues World and November Books' Blues Paperbacks series.

Book excerpt: From the International Booker Prize–shortlisted author of The Memory Police comes a hypnotic tale of friendship, family secrets, and coming of age set in 1970s Japan. In the spring of 1972, after the death of her father, twelve-year-old Tomoko is sent by her mother to live for a year with her wealthy aunt and uncle. It is a year that will change her life. Her aunt’s family lives in a magnificent colonial mansion surrounded by sprawling gardens and the remnants of an old zoo, where the family’s pet pygmy hippopotamus still resides. The family is as beguiling as their home, but beneath their sophistication and charm lie darker undercurrents that Tomoko struggles to understand—her aunt’s misery, her handsome foreign uncle’s curious absences, her German great-aunt's experience of the Second World War. At the centre of the family is Tomoko’s cousin Mina, a precocious asthmatic girl who draws Tomoko into an intoxicating world full of secret crushes and elaborate storytelling, including the strange tales inspired by the illustrated matchboxes she collects beneath her bed. The two girls share confidences and enthusiasms, encounter heartache, and have their eyes opened to the workings of the adult world. In this elegant jewel box of a book, Yoko Ogawa invites us to witness a powerful and formative interlude in Tomoko's life. Beautifully atmospheric, and rich with the mystery and magic of youthful experience, Mina’s Matchbox is a tenderly elegiac depiction of two girls poised on the brink of adulthood, and of a family on the edge of collapse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Instantly engrossing, free of self-pity, and resonant with resilience and gratitude . . . A powerful introduction to the American immigrant story.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) When a little girl visits her great-grandfather, she asks about the collection of matchboxes harboring objects she can hold in her hand, each one evoking a memory. Together they tell of his journey from Italy to a new country, before he could read and write: the olive pit his mother gave him to suck on when there wasn’t enough food; a bottle cap he saw on his way to the boat; a ticket still retaining the thrill of his first baseball game. Newbery Medalist Paul Fleischman and acclaimed illustrator Bagram Ibatoulline tell a breathtaking immigration tale with appeal across generations.
