Book excerpt: The fifteen orations in this volume are intended to furnish models for students of Oratory, Argumentation, and Debate. For the most part the orations are given without abridgement. In making the selection the aim has been to include only orations that (1) deal with subjects of either contemporary or historical interest, (2) were delivered by men eminent as orators, and (3) are of inherent literary value. There are of course many orators and orations in modern times that fulfill these tests, but it is believed that the orations selected are fairly representative. A further aim has been to secure such variety in the selections as to cover in a single volume the fields of deliberative, forensic, pulpit, and demonstrative oratory, and so to meet the needs of classes both in argumentation and oratorical composition.--Provided by editor in Preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masterpieces of Modern Oratory The fifteen orations in this volume are intended to furnish models for students of Oratory, Argumentation, and Debate. For the most part the orations are given without abridgment. There are of course many orators and orations in modern times that fulfill these tests, but it is believed that the orations selected are fairly representative. A further aim has been to secure such variety in the selections as to cover in a single volume the fields of deliberative, forensic, pulpit, and demonstrative oratory, and so to meet the needs of classes both in argumentation and oratorical composition. If we give relatively less attention nowadays to the art side of oratory, - the manner of delivery, - there is all the more need of studying the matter, - the invention, organization, and expression of the thought. The young men in our schools and colleges, who in a small or large way are bound to be called upon to speak in public, should be taught how to compose for a hearer as distinguished from a reader - how to construct an oration as distinguished from an essay. To this end oratorical models should be critically studied in order that the student may learn and appreciate how masters have wielded the language for the purposes of conviction and persuasion. And this should be made an intensive rather than an extensive process. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of Oratory There is no modern text-book, so far as the author is aware, which covers the same ground as the present volume. The treatment covers all forms of public discourse, but the point of view is that of formal oratory; the assumption always is that one has time to write out in full a set speech for a more or less formal occasion. Of course the formal ora tion is only one of many kinds of public speeches; indeed, with the average speaker, it may be com paratively rare, but it is only by the systematic study and practice of the rhetoric of oratory that the stu dent can best train himself generally for all kinds of public speaking. Such foundation work in written composition is absolutely essential to appreciate and cultivate the oratorical style and to guard against the prolix and discursive tendencies of extempore speech. The science and art of oratory was so comprehen sively and exhaustively treated by the ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians that, as John Quincy Adams said in his address accepting the professorship of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard, to select, com bine, and apply their precepts is the only duty left for their followers of all succeeding times, and to obtain a perfect familiarity with their instruction is to arrive at a mastery of the art. A new treatise on oratory, therefore, can be little more than themodernizing of old material - the modern application of principles elaborately wrought out by such writers as Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. The author would not underrate his indebtedness to some of the modern treatises (cited in the text), but for the most part the present treatise simply aims to adapt ancient precepts to present-day conditions, supplementing theory with suggestive exercises and considerable illustrative matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of an Orator: With Examples From Great Masterpieces, of Ancient and Modern Eloquence Some voices, it is true, are of more limited compass than others; but most are full, reso nant, and melodious, of great range and flex ibility - capable of venting, at one moment, a tempest of passion, and of issuing, at another, in soft, low, murmuring accents that linger pleasantly in the ear. In both cases reading aloud is advantageous - to correct the defects of the one, to improve and strengthen the other. If, said the great critic, Ruskin, I could have a son or a daughter possessed of but one accomplishment in life, it should be that of good reading. When elocution is made a part of education, but not before, this accomplishment, so useful in itself and so val nable in the elementary training of an orator, will be within reach of every student. The late Professor J. R. Seeley, speaking at the Royal Institution, said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A fascinating examination of how restricting speech has continuously shaped our culture, and how censorship is used as a tool to prop up authorities and maintain class and gender disparities Through compelling narrative, historian Eric Berkowitz reveals how drastically censorship has shaped our modern society. More than just a history of censorship, Dangerous Ideas illuminates the power of restricting speech; how it has defined states, ideas, and culture; and (despite how each of us would like to believe otherwise) how it is something we all participate in. This engaging cultural history of censorship and thought suppression throughout the ages takes readers from the first Chinese emperor’s wholesale elimination of books, to Henry VIII’s decree of death for anyone who “imagined” his demise, and on to the attack on Charlie Hebdo and the volatile politics surrounding censorship of social media. Highlighting the base impulses driving many famous acts of suppression, Berkowitz demonstrates the fragility of power and how every individual can act as both the suppressor and the suppressed.
