Book excerpt: This study analyzes how morphosyntactic structures and information flow characteristics are used by interlocutors in producing and understanding clauses in conversational Javanese, focusing on the Cirebon variety of the language. While some clauses display grammatical mechanisms used to code their structure explicitly and redundantly, many other clauses include few if any of these grammatical resources. These extremes mark a cline between the morphosyntactic and paratactic expression of clauses. The situation is thrown into relief by the frequency of unexpressed referents and conversationalists’ heavy reliance on shared experience and cultural knowledge. In all cases, pragmatic inference grounded in the interactional context is essential for establishing not only the discourse functions, but indeed also the very structure of clauses in conversational Javanese. This study contributes to our understanding of transitivity, emergent constituency, prosodic organization and the co-construction of meaning and structure by conversational interlocutors.

Based on extensive research in Indonesia, he assesses the level of support for JI and the Indonesian government's success in dealing with the threat it poses to stability. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its name shows, that is, On Teaching That Works, this book is about teaching that, hopefully, can empower our students to be better in their life in and after their formal schooling. To be better is, of course, not just dependent on teaching; it also depends on learning. That is, students can indeed be better in and beyond schools if they learn harder/smarter day by day throughout their life span. Learning harder/smarter is, ideally, the result of, among order things, how teachers teach their students. This is why this book covers also some issues related to learning, a process through which learners can move, individually and/or collectively, from being dependent to being independent with characters that are universally acceptable. In that sense, although the focus of this book seems to be in and around the teaching and learning of writing in general, in English as a foreign language (EFL) in particular, it may also be relevant for those who are interested in educational issues in general like how a teacher can be an inspiring one and not just a good or a superior one (Chapter Four) or how our schools should be redesigned in order to make them more effective in empowering our students in and beyond their formal educational processes (Chapter 9). We have to acknowledge that the articles presented in this book have been made public before, either in academic journals or in academic seminars. We believe that by transferring those articles into a book form the ideas we have discussed before can then have broader audience and, therefore, be more beneficial for its audience worldwide. We believe, however, that this book is not a perfect one. We are, therefore, looking forward to having any criticism from our readers to make it better in the future.

Looking at diverse contexts from sign languages in Indonesia to literacy practices in Brazil, the authors argue that unless we change and reconstitute the ways in which languages are taught and conceptualized, language studies will not be able to improve the social welfare of language users.
