Book Synopsis Gratian's Tractatus de Penitentia by : Gratian
Download or read book Gratian's Tractatus de Penitentia written by Gratian and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gratian's Decretum is one of the major works in European history, a text that in many ways launched the field of canon law. In this new volume, Atria Larson presents to students and scholars alike a critical edition of De penitentia (Decretum C.33 q.3), the foundational text on penance, both for canon law and for theology, of the twelfth century. This edition takes into account recent manuscript discoveries and research into the various recensions of Gratian's text and proposes a model for how a future critical edition of the entire Decretum could be formatted by offering a facing-page English translation. This translation is the first of this section of Gratian's De penitentia into any modern language and makes the text accessible to a wider audience. Both the Latin and the English text are presented in a way to make clear the development of Gratian's text in various stages within two main recensions. The edition and translation are preceded by an introduction relating the latest scholarship on Gratian and his text and are followed by three appendices, including one that provides a transcription of the relevant text from the debated manuscript Sankt Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek 673, and one that lists possible formal sources and related contemporary texts. This book provides a full edition and translation of the text studied in depth in Master of Penance: Gratian and the Development of Penitential Thought and Law in the Twelfth Century (CUA Press, 2014) by the same author.

Book Synopsis Marqus ibn Qunbar’s Master and Disciple by : Botros K. Sadek
Download or read book Marqus ibn Qunbar’s Master and Disciple written by Botros K. Sadek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marqus ibn Qunbar's Master and Disciple offers the critical edition and translation of a theological treatise that is published here for the first time. Marqus (+1208), a Coptic priest, was a controversial figure who challenged the Coptic hierarchs and eventually joined the Melkites. He argued that auricular confession is indispensible for salvation, but his superiors considered such teaching foreign to the Coptic heritage and incompatible with the Bible and Didascalia. For them, forgiveness is granted through repentance, the liturgy, and general absolution. The contentious disagreement sparked by Marqus among the Coptic community remains a subject of ongoing debate among Christians.

Once a respected arranger of musical magic rituals, now she's in exile after a wedding ritual she wrote led to the tragedy it was supposed to prevent. As disasters shake the world, unaffected by the chants that should control them, she hears haunting new music in the wind - music that heralds terrible new forces at work, or forces so old they have long been forgotten. In search of answers, Sarya returns to the Skola of Music she left in disgrace. Confronted with the mistakes of her past, she defies the Masters who think long-forgotten secrets are best left forgotten - and resumes her complicated relationship with the talented singer Adan Muari, friend, sparring partner, the man she can never have. Then a beautiful, nameless man in chains begins to appear in her dreams, begging her to sing the song she heard in the wind, the song that will set him free. Is he a god with the power to save the world or the power to destroy everything she knows and loves? As catastrophe closes in on Sarya, the Skola, and the man she loves, she must race to discover the chained man's identity and the meaning of his song before the world itself is torn apart. Download or read book The Fireborn Road written by L.G. Surgeson and published by Next Chapter. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years have passed since the Summer of Fire, and the downfall of General Salamander. The outside world has begun to heal, but inside Tartaria, where brother fought brother and whole clans were wiped out, the wounds still run deep and raw. Fear and suspicion have made rebuilding hard, and rumours of a new threat rising in the shadows of the steppe have reached Aberddu. Once again, the Aberddu Adventurers Guild find themselves heading to Tartaria. This time they are in the company of two powerful but eccentric wizards, ostensibly engaged in an attempt to expand the continental portal network. Cosseted and used to their own way, the wizards have little first-hand experience of the world outside the walls of the Mages Guild, and have much to learn about life in the war-torn shell of a once-great nation. The adventurers will have to teach them that there is more to be feared than bad manners, fisticuffs, and unsatisfactory bathroom arrangements as they travel together down the Fireborn Road.

Book excerpt: “Epic fantasy at its finest—an homage to storytelling and legend, richly told and endlessly engaging.”—Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter Don’t miss the first novel in this stunning Silk Road-inspired epic fantasy series from R.R. Virdi—a saga of legends, lies, and the secretive storyteller who’s spun them all. All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first. I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster. My name is Ari. And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil. “Rich world-building, plenty of action, and devious twists abound. Very highly recommended!” —Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of V-Wars and Kagen the Damned At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
Book Synopsis Souls under Siege by : Nicole Archambeau
Download or read book Souls under Siege written by Nicole Archambeau and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Souls under Siege, Nicole Archambeau explores how the inhabitants of southern France made sense of the ravages of successive waves of plague, the depredations of mercenary warfare, and the violence of royal succession during the fourteenth century. Many people, she finds, understood both plague and war as the symptoms of spiritual sicknesses caused by excessive sin, and they sought cures in confession. Archambeau draws on a rich evidentiary base of sixty-eight narrative testimonials from the canonization inquest for Countess Delphine de Puimichel, which was held in the market town of Apt in 1363. Each witness in the proceedings had lived through the outbreaks of plague in 1348 and 1361, as well as the violence inflicted by mercenaries unemployed during truces in the Hundred Years' War. Consequently, their testimonies unexpectedly reveal the importance of faith and the role of affect in the healing of body and soul alike. Faced with an unprecedented cascade of crises, the inhabitants of Provence relied on saints and healers, their worldview connecting earthly disease and disaster to the struggle for their eternal souls. Souls under Siege illustrates how medieval people approached sickness and uncertainty by using a variety of remedies, making clear that "healing" had multiple overlapping meanings in this historical moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominican Penitent Women is the first comprehensive introduction in English to Dominican penitent spirituality. The volume examines Italian lay-women's ways of life through religious rules, hagiographical texts, and their own writings spanning the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries. The first section contains translations of two versions of their rules, which open a window to the religious practices and institutions that structured their lives. The second section introduces hagiographical texts, including the Miracoli of Catherine of Siena and an extract from Thomas of Siena's Supplement, which includes accounts not discussed in Raymond of Capua's Legenda maior. A final section consists of Osanna of Mantua's letters to Francesco Gonzaga and Lucia Brocadelli's Seven Revelations, in which these two women wove mundane details and cunning practical insights into their Christ-centered devotion.
