Written for the new Freemason, it contains much that would interest the general reader seeking information about "The Craft."

JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURAL HISTORIANS The great cathedral of Chartres is the most impressive and exciting building surviving from the middle ages, andis preserved almost intact. Yet we know nothing of the men who created it. John James, in this masterpiece of detection, shows how he came to identify the master masons from the stones themselves. His meticulous `reading' of the cathedral has revealed much about those men: how they solved problems of engineering and design, how they raised two-ton stones forty metres into the air, and how one mason controlled over 300 men in this gigantic workshop. JOHN JAMES is an Australian architect. His first visit to Chartres, in 1969, led to a continuing passion for the early Gothic buildings of northern France, and he has been `reading their stones' ever since.

Book excerpt: This book is aimed, primarily, at the Mason who has been raised to the Third Degree, but it is also for those older Masons who have not delved into the depth of meaning in Masonic ceremonies. As Freemasonry is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols, this book takes a look at what those allegories and symbols are hinting at.The creators of the amazing Masonic degree ceremonies have added a layer of meaning that goes beyond the obvious moral lessons and starts to point the Mason who seeks light towards a more spiritual understanding of himself and the reason for his existence in this world. This is the third of three volumes, each aimed at one of the three Craft Degrees.

The Brill Handbook of Freemasonry is a pioneering work that brings together, for the first time, leading scholars on Freemasonry. The first section covers historical perspectives, such as the origins and early history of Freemasonry. The second deals with the relationship between Freemasonry and specific religious traditions such as the Catholic Church, Judaism, and Islam. In the third section, organisational themes, such as the use of rituals, are explored, while the fourth section deals with issues related to society and politics - women, blacks, colonialism, nationalism, and war. The fifth and final section is devoted to Freemasonry and culture, including music, literature, modern art, architecture and material culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making this Manual available on amazon for brethren who wants a printed copy. The Mentor Plan was conceived as an answer to one of the problems of Masonry - the producing of interested Masons by means of a well - rounded education in all phases of the Royal Art. It is not possible to impart all of the knowledge necessary to produce a generation of informed Masons in the brief time the Mentor will be active in the life of the candidate. The Plan, therefore, must have, as its main objective, the promotion of an interest in Masonic knowledge. It must devise a means of creating a desire in the candidate to learn more about Masonry and point out to him the sources from which he will be able to obtain more light on those facets of it which he will find interesting to him. These, of course, will vary with the individual. It is not the objective of the Mentor Plan to teach the ritual nor is it generally recommended that the Mentor instruct the new Mason in the catechisms which he is required to learn. In some Lodges it will be necessary that the same brother perform both functions because of the shortage of instructors. However, when this is the case care should be taken to avoid confusing the two subjects. The Mentor Plan will endeavor to acquaint the new brother with some of the history of Freemasonry, its philosophies and objectives. It should also give him some insight into the literature of the Fraternity wherein he may begin and continue his study of its teachings and doctrines.Instruction under the Mentor Plan must be individual and personalized if it is to be effective. In embracing this system we are following the time honored method of the Fraternity, that of imparting instruction from mouth-to-ear, for Freemasonry believes in and stresses the importance of the individual. Through the individual, as he comes to realize that he is Freemasonry to many people, will understand the necessity for him to exemplify its principles by walking uprightly before God and man, squaring his actions by the square of virtue.
