Book excerpt: As discipleship demands new perspectives and priorities, these homilies articulate relationships in a variety of settings, images and lifestyles of being in the world with others. Though they help us understand the presence of God in our lives, living with our own mystery and spirituality becomes like a “dependable compass” that is always there to guide us. God sees what is in each human heart and we give ourselves the space and the time to nourish it with the mystery of his love for us. It is our road map as we walk by faith and not by sight alone. Jesus’ life, teaching, and ministry in a particular place, time, and culture have great significance to our journey as far as our mission is concerned. He identifies himself with the people across cultures and he enters into solidarity with those in need. St Augustine once said, “Faith is to believe what we do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.” We may not know where our journey takes us because there is not much of a plan, but it is our faith that sustains us to complete a journey through thick and thin. It provides us with the opportunity to let the mind wander and watch and listen to God in prayer. Hence, whether it is a daily walk or the journey through daily life, these homilies are offered to help us continue with confidence; with enthusiasm to move on and in every sense be men and women of the Gospel. After all, as the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta once wrote: We cannot all do great things, but can do small things with great love.”

Book excerpt: "Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors - Dante Alighieri, [Niccoláo] Machiavelli, and [Giovanni] Boccaccio - and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature."--Pub. desc.

Book excerpt: The Fear of Hell is a provocative study of two of the most powerful images in Christianity&—hell and the eucharist. Drawing upon the writings of Italian preachers and theologians of the Counter-Reformation, Piero Camporesi demonstrates the extraordinary power of the Baroque imagination to conjure up punishments, tortures, and the rewards of sin. In the first part of the book, Camporesi argues that hell was a very real part of everyday life during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Preachers portrayed hell in images typical of common experience, comparing it to a great city, a hospital, a prison, a natural disaster, a rioting mob, or a feuding family. The horror lay in the extremes to which these familiar images could be taken. The city of hell was not an ordinary city, but a filthy, stinking, and overcrowded place, an underworld &"sewer&" overflowing with the refuse of decaying flesh and excrement&—shocking but not beyond human imagination. What was most disturbing about this grotesque imagery was the realization by the people of the day that the punishment of afterlife was an extension of their daily experience in a fallen world. Thus, according to Camporesi, the fear of hell had many manifestations over the centuries, aided by such powerful promoters as Gregory the Great and Dante, but ironically it was during the Counter-Reformation that hell's tie with the physical world became irrevocable, making its secularization during the Enlightenment ultimately easier. The eucharist, or host, the subject of the second part of the book, represented corporeal salvation for early modern Christians and was therefore closely linked with the imagery of hell, the place of perpetual corporeal destruction. As the bread of life, the host possessed many miraculous powers of healing and sustenance, which made it precious to those in need. In fact, it was seen to be so precious to some that Camporesi suggests that there was a &"clandestine consumption of the sacred unleavened bread, a network of dealers and sellers&" and a &"market of consumers.&" But to those who ate the host unworthily was the prospect of swift retribution. One wicked priest continued to celebrate the mass despite his sin, and as a result, &"his tongue and half of his face became rotten, thus demonstrating, unwillingly, by the stench of his decaying face, how much the pestiferous smell of his contaminated heart was abominable to God.&" When received properly, however, the host was a source of health and life both in this world and in the world to come. Written with style and imagination, The Fear of Hell offers a vivid and scholarly examination of themes central to Christian culture, whose influence can still be found in our beliefs and customs today.

Book excerpt: “New Insights on the Gospels” Volume VII, is part of a collection that enables you to accompany Our Lord Jesus Christ throughout every Sunday of the liturgical year, together with the founder of the Heralds of the GospelThe work “New Insights on the Gospels,” beyond being exegetical and pastoral, has the merit of making theology accessible to all readers regardless of social status or academic level. To soar in the heights of Theology, what is needed, more than culture or intelligence, is faith. Faith enables us to penetrate truths and mysteries that lie beyond the reach of human understanding. When it comes to believing, higher learning or intellectual capacity is not of consequence; what truly matters is having a soul that is open to God’s light. It is only in the Catholic Faith that today’s world will find answers to the problems that perturb it. Perhaps this explains the growing interest among the faithful in deepening their knowledge of Catholic Doctrine. Could this be the reason for the successful publication of the first volumes of this collection? Published in four languages—English, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese—its first edition quickly ran out, achieving a circulation of almost seventy thousand copies. Saving precious teachings of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church from falling into oblivion, it is a response to the worthy and emphatic recommendation of the Second Vatican Council of giving primacy to Thomism (cf. Optatam totius, n.16) in the study of the mysteries of salvation. The work has met wide acceptance among priests, for whom it is mainly intended, to serve as a resource in homily preparation. But it has met an equally warm reception among the lay faithful who are eager to broaden their religious knowledge. This may be a unique symptom of the spiritual condition of our age: the thirst for the divine. It is a thirst that increases as it is quenched, causing neither distress nor pain but only joy for those who seek to satisfy it in the crystalline springs of the Word of God.
