Book Synopsis Milestones & Guideposts of Massachusetts and Southeastern New Hampshire by : Mary E. Gage
Download or read book Milestones & Guideposts of Massachusetts and Southeastern New Hampshire written by Mary E. Gage and published by Powwow River Books. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Massachusetts, roadsides are dotted with small stone markers giving the mileage to major cities. These ancient road signs called milestones aided travelers during the 1700’s and 1800’s as our road signs today do with their mileage and destination information. Although, these old milestones no longer serve a useful purpose in our modern age of highways, they continue to fascinate us. This fascination has led to the preservation by local communities of at least 129 milestones in Massachusetts and a number of milestones in New Hampshire. Milestones were for the most part commissioned by private citizens and made by local or itinerant stone carvers. With the exception of the turnpike milestones, no two milestones are alike. There are differences in the type of stone chosen, the wording, and the lettering styles of individual carvers. These differences give the milestones personality and character. This sense of character is one of the endearing aspects of these humble road signs that continues to draw us to them. Although some of the milestones like those around Boston and those along the famous Upper Post Road are well known, many are not. The authors have spent a number of years combing through old books and newspapers and traveling through the state in search of these local historical treasures. This book draws together all of their research in an effort to provide a comprehensive inventory of Massachusetts milestones. In addition, it includes milestones the authors have found in their travels through southeastern New Hampshire.

Book Synopsis The Indian Heritage of New Hampshire and Northern New England by : Thaddeus Piotrowski
Download or read book The Indian Heritage of New Hampshire and Northern New England written by Thaddeus Piotrowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years before Jamestown was settled, European adventurers and explorers landed on the shores of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts in search of fame, fortune, and souls to convert to Christianity. Unbeknownst to them all, the "New World" they had found was actually a very old one, as the history of the native people spanned 10,000 years or more. This work is a compilation of old and new essays written by present-day archeologists, by explorers and missionaries who were in direct contact with the Indians, and by scholars over the last three centuries. The essays are in three sections: Prehistory, which concentrates on the Paleo-Indian, Archaic, and Woodland phases of the native heritage, the Contact Era, which deals with the explorers and their experiences in the New World, and Collections, Sites, Trails, and Names, which focuses on various dedications to the native population and significant names (such as the Massabesic Trail and the Cohas Brook site).

Book Synopsis The New Hampshire State Constitution by : Lawrence Friedman
Download or read book The New Hampshire State Constitution written by Lawrence Friedman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this newly revised work, Lawrence Friedman presents a comprehensive and accessible survey of New Hampshire constitutional history and constitutional law. One of the oldest written constitutions in the United States, the New Hampshire Constitution pre-dates the federal constitution and, with the Massachusetts Constitution, served as a model for many of the state constitutions that followed. This volume recounts the history of its drafting and development over the past 200 years and reviews in detail both the constitutional provisions that frame the state government as well as those that secure individual rights against government infringement. The book reviews the major cases decided under each provision and provides commentary on the continued development of state constitutional law in New Hampshire. The second edition provides revisions throughout the book updating each commentary with the latest cases including those involving the state constitutional right to education, along with cutting-edge issues of search and seizure law, making it the most comprehensive, single-volume guide to the New Hampshire Constitution. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state's constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series provides essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.
