Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Volume 1 covers the fundamentals, operations and catalysts, volume 2 examines devices, reactions and applications, with volume 3 rounding off the trilogy with system, process and plant engineering. Fluid dynamics, mixing, heat/mass transfer, purification and separation microstructured devices and microstructured reactors are explained in the first volume. Volume 2 segments microreactor design, fabrication and assembly, bulk and fine chemistry, polymerisation, fuel processing and functional materials into understandable parts. The final volume of the handbook addresses microreactor systems design and scale-up, sensing, analysis and control, chemical process engineering, economic and eco-efficiency analyses as well as microreactor plant case studies in one book. Together, this 3-volume handbook explains the science behind micro process engineering to the scale-up and their real life industrial applications.

Book excerpt: Modeling and Simulation of Catalytic Reactors for Petroleum Refining deals with fundamental descriptions of the main conversion processes employed in the petroleum refining industry: catalytic hydrotreating, catalytic reforming, and fluid catalytic cracking. Common approaches for modeling of catalytic reactors for steady-state and dynamic simulations are also described and analyzed. Aspects such as thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, process variables, process scheme, and reactor design are discussed in detail from both research and commercial points of view. Results of simulation with the developed models are compared with those determined at pilot plant scale as well as commercial practice. Kinetics data used in the reactor model are either taken from the literature or obtained under controlled experiments at the laboratory.

Book excerpt: Aerated stirred tank reactors are widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industry in which mass transport and mixing time are among the most important parameters. Despite their importance, the prediction of theses parameters is still challenging due to large differences of the hydrodynamic inhomogeneities between lab scale and industrial scale. This thesis focuses on the measurement of these inhomogeneities and their influence on the important process parameters. In order to determine the differences to industrial processes, a transparent stirred tank reactor on industrial scale has been erected at the Hamburg University of Technology.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes conventional fixed-bed reactors such as trickle-bed, bubble (packed) column, and multitubular reactors with regard to process efficiency, design and safety. It is shown that these reactors do not possess any substantial potential for improving industrial processes. Modern concepts in mass transfer, kinetics and process design are applied to process development. In light of the given analysis, new approaches to the development of technologies based on innovative principles are elucidated. For the first time, first-hand knowledge about Two-Zone Model, Oscillation Theory, map of the energy dissipation is presented in full.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic multiplicity in the trickle flow, or low interaction, regime is a well documented phenomenon. Multiple hydrodynamic states are often presented in the form of hysteresis loops where the hydrodynamic parameter studied are shown as a function of the operating history of the bed, i.e. liquid and gas flow rates. In extreme cases the lower leg, representing an increase in liquid flow rate on a pre-wetted and drained bed, is commonly referred to as the Levec mode. The upper extreme, referred to as the Kan-liquid mode, represents a decrease in liquid flow rate after operation in the high interaction regime. The many reported studies investigating liquid-solid mass transfer in trickle beds have generally used either the dissolution or electrochemical techniques. Numerous researchers have used their data to develop correlations predicting solid-liquid mass transfer coefficients. Most of these studies do not specify the multiplicity mode of operation. Only two studies (Sims et al. (1993) and Van der Merwe, Nicol & Al-Dahhan (2008)) use both the Levec and Kan-liquid operating modes. Both of these studies suggest that solid-liquid mass transfer also exhibit multiplicity behaviour although the trends suggested or speculated differ from each other. Sims et al. (1993) found that a Kan-liquid operated bed will outperform a Levec operated bed: however in contrast to this Van der Merwe et al. (2008) speculated that a Levec operated bed is better suited for liquid limited reactions due to enhanced liquid-solid mass transfer in the Levec mode as a result of faster interstitial velocity. This study showed that solid-liquid mass transfer coefficients, measured with both the dissolution and electrochemical technique, show multiplicity behaviour. Two distinct operating regions were found, which corresponds to the Levec and Kan-liquid modes. Measurements taken using the electrochemical technique yielded solid-liquid mass transfer coefficients larger than those measured using the dissolution method. The experimental results agree with the trend found by Sims et al. (1993) but the mass transfer coefficients in this study were significantly lower. Additionally it was shown that the difference in mass transfer coefficients, in the two modes, cannot be explained by merely compensating for the differences in wetting efficiency and interstitial velocity, suggesting that the Levec mode has a larger percentage of stagnant or poorly irrigated zones. It was also shown that mass transfer coefficients measured at the top of the column is higher than those measured at the bottom, suggesting that the flow structure is changing as a function of axial length. Lastly, with regards to electrochemical measurements of liquid-solid mass transfer, it was shown that measurements using a single particle electrode compared well to that of a multiple packing electrode.

Book excerpt: Today's frustrations and anxieties resulting from two energy crises in only one decade, show us the problems and fragility of a world built on high energy consumption, accustomed to the use of cheap non-renewable energy and to the acceptance of eXisting imbalances between the resources and demands of countries. Despite all these stressing factors, our world is still hesitatins about the urgency of undertaking new and decisive research that could stabilize our future, Could this trend change in the near future? In our view, two different scenarios are possible. A renewed energy tension could take place with an unpredictable timing mostly related to political and economic factors, This could bring again scientists and technologists to a new state of shock and awaken our talents, A second interesting and beneficial scenario could result from the positive influence of a new generation of researchers that with or without immediate crisis, acting both in industry and academia, will face the challenge of developing technologies and processes to pave the way to a less vulnerable society, Because Chemical Reactor Design and Technology activities are at the heart of these required new technologies the timeliness of the NATO-Advanced Study Institute at the University of Western Ontario, London, was very appropriate.
