Book excerpt: This report presents a description and calibration results of the modified NASA Langley Low Frequency Vibration Test Apparatus. The description includes both the suspension system and the data acquisition system. The test apparatus consists of a 2 inch thick, 21 inch diameter aluminum plate that is suspended from an advanced suspension system using a 40 foot long cable system. The test apparatus employed three orthogonally aligned pairs of Sundstrand QA-700 servo accelerometers that can measure accelerations as low as 1 micro-g. The calibration involved deriving the mass and moments of inertia of the test platform from measured input forces and measured acceleration responses. The derived mass and moments were compared to test platform mass properties obtained initially from measurements with a special mass properties instrument. Results of the calibration tests showed that using the product of the test apparatus mass and the measured accelerations, the disturbance force at the center of gravity (CG) can be determined within 4 percent on all three axes. Similarly the disturbance moments about the X, Y, and Z axes can be determined within 5 percent by using the product of the measured moments of inertia and the angular accelerations about the X, Y, and Z axes. Book excerpt: This report describes the procedures used to calibrate the automated mass properties measurement system, a system consisting of various components that together measure the mass, center of mass location, magnitudes of the principal mass moments of inertia, and orientation of the principal axes of a given test object. This system, located at the Armstrong Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, can determine the mass properties of test objects weighing from 0.5 to 450 pounds. It is used for a variety of applications including measuring the properties of manikin segments for modeling purposes or evaluating newly developed helmets and night vision goggles to determine the effects of adding their mass to the head-neck system. As the system is actually composed of a number of devices that measure different aspects of the mass properties, each of these components must be calibrated separately. A description of the use of each component and the procedure used to calibrate it is presently for all of the devices. After each of these separate elements are calibrated, the accuracy of the entire system is then verified using an aluminum test block. The procedure described herein should be repeated at least once a month and before and after every test series.

Book excerpt: Vibration tests were performed to develop and validate the forced limited vibration testing capability at the NASA Langley Research Center. The force limited vibration test technique has been utilized at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and other NASA centers to provide more realistic vibration test environments for aerospace flight hardware. In standard random vibration tests, the payload is mounted to a rigid fixture and the interface acceleration is controlled to a specified level based on a conservative estimate of the expected flight environment. In force limited vibration tests, both the acceleration and force are controlled at the mounting interface to compensate for differences between the flexible flight mounting and rigid test fixture. This minimizes the over test at the payload natural frequencies and results in more realistic forces being transmitted at the mounting interface. Force and acceleration response data was provided by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for a test article that was flown in 1998 on a Black Brant sounding rocket. The measured flight interface acceleration data was used as the reference acceleration spectrum. Using this acceleration spectrum, three analytical methods were used to estimate the force limits.
