This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1992 a conference honoring Elwood S. Buffa was held at the Anderson Graduate School of Management of the University of California, Los Angeles. This book is a collection of the work presented at that conference. The scholars who gathered to honor El are the prominent researchers in the field of Operations Management. Their collective work published in this book represents the richness of the field and provides the reader with valuable insights into its important issues and problems. While any grouping of the articles by these distinguished scholars will be arbitrary, I have organized the book in four sections. In the first section the articles dealing with the strategic issues in Operations Management are compiled. The articles deal with continuous improvement, quality, services, supply chain management, and creating value through operations. The articles that explore the interface of Operations Management with other functional areas, e.g. engineering and marketing, are grouped in the second section. The third section of the book contains articles that attempt to model some important planning problems that arise in the management of production and operations. Some of the papers in this section provide state of the art reviews of selected topic areas. Finally, the fourth section contains articles that deal with future directions for Operations Management. The authors offer several insights into the future evolution of the field. The book begins with the keynote address given by El Buffa at the start of the conference on November 2, 1991.

Book excerpt: SystemVerilog is a Hardware Description Language that enables designers to work at the higher levels of logic design abstractions that match the increased complexity of current day integrated circuit and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) designs. The majority of the book assumes a basic background in logic design and software programming concepts. It is directed at: • students currently in an introductory logic design course that also teaches SystemVerilog, • designers who want to update their skills from Verilog or VHDL, and • students in VLSI design and advanced logic design courses that include verification as well as design topics. The book starts with a tutorial introduction on hardware description languages and simulation. It proceeds to the register-transfer design topics of combinational and finite state machine (FSM) design — these mirror the topics of introductory logic design courses. The book covers the design of FSM-datapath designs and their interfaces, including SystemVerilog interfaces. Then it covers the more advanced topics of writing testbenches including using assertions and functional coverage. A comprehensive index provides easy access to the book's topics. The goal of the book is to introduce the broad spectrum of features in the language in a way that complements introductory and advanced logic design and verification courses, and then provides a basis for further learning.

Book excerpt: After being abandoned by his animal friends, Little John Crow must come to terms with what it means to be part of a community when you are a vulture. "Little John Crow is full of energy and color." —People Magazine "A new children’s book by [Ziggy Marley] and his wife, Orly, aims to educate youth on the threats the birds face and the vital ecological role they play." —Audubon Magazine Little John Crow is a young vulture growing up in Bull Bay on the edge of the Blue Mountains in Jamaica, where he lives with his loving parents Sharil and Rusil Crow. He spends his days playing with his friends, a motley group that includes a snake, George; Missy, the French pigeon; Chiqueen, a chicken hawk; Hummy, the hummingbird; and the Three Little Birds. One morning while the group of friends is relaxing by a cool river, they start chatting about life, their parents' jobs, and what they want to be when they grow up. As the conversation continues, Little John Crow realizes he has no idea what his parents do for work. Little John Crow and his friends set out to solve this mystery, but what they discover shocks them—Little John Crow and his vulture parents are scary scavengers! Most of his friends are disgusted when they learn this, and before Little John Crow can even adjust to this news, a terrible tragedy strikes. Feeling lonely and isolated from his friends, the young vulture flees Bull Bay. After traveling for days, a tired and hungry Little John Crow is fortunate to be found by a group of vultures. With their support and encouragement, the young vulture learns to embrace his future, and after months away, he returns to Bull Bay just in the nick of time to save his home from ruin. Filled with humor and memorable characters, Little John Crow reminds us of the importance of accepting our differences and remembering that life offers a place and purpose for all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi Memories is an account of life in 1967-1971 in Lilongwe, then the capital of the Central Region. It is drawn from the letters written by Humphrey and Anne Taylor to their parents, in England. Humphrey was appointed Rector of St Peter's Anglican church in Lilongwe. His parish covered a huge area of outstations, churches, schools and political detention centres. Anne taught English and History in the Boys' and Girls' Secondary Schools at Likuni, a R.C. mission station five miles outside Lilongwe and, with a friend, ran a Homecraft class for African women in the Church hall.. St Peter's Rectory was the midpoint of the Diocese, so many people travelling between the north and south, stayed overnight. Eventually, the Diocese agreed to let Humphrey build St Peter's Guest House, which now features in the Rough Guide to Africa. The book describes the joys of living in such a beautiful country and notes the development of the Taylors' two little daughters, for the benefit of their grandparents in England. It records the Humphrey and Anne Taylor's efforts to serve the disparate communities they found there and the friendships they made with both Africans and Europeans. There are accounts of the tensions of working in post-colonial Africa, with inevitable friction between the races and cultures. Visits to other countries in Central Africa, enabled them to compare their political development with what was happening in Malawi, where President Hastings Banda became ever more despotic. During their leave in the UK, in 1970, Humphrey did an MA in African Urban Studies at SOAS. They returned to Malawi in December 1971 but nine months later, Humphrey was deported from Malawi on President Banda's orders, because of his involvement with political detainees. The whole family returned to the UK. However, they retained their love for Malawi and its people and in 2000, Humphrey and Anne were invited to return to take part in the Jubilee celebrations of St Peter's Church. They met old friends, including the Vice President, a former teaching colleague of Anne's, and were able to see how the new democratic government was working as well as to observe the impact of AIDS and the doubling of the population in a country without mineral resources.
