Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryville College Catalog 1880-81 The College grounds, consist of sixty-five acres - and for beautiful scenery are not surpassed by any in the country. They are elevated and undulating, covered with a beautiful growth of evergreens, and command a splendid view of the Cumberland Mountains on the north, and of the Smoky Mountains on the south. On these grounds have recently been erected three new buildings at a cost of fifty thousand dollars. The location is as remarkable for its healthfulness as it is for its beauty. The Central Building is adapted to and used exclusively for College purposes, and in honor of the Founder of the Institution is called Anderson Hall. The North Dormitory, in honor of the late John C.Baldwin, of New Jersey, is called Baldwin Hall, and is occupied by the young ladies. In this hall ample and pleasant accommodations for board are provided for all the members of the Institution t#o may choose to board there. The South Dormitory, called Memorial Hall, is occupied by the young men. In the basement of Baldwin Hall are five, and in that of Memorial Hall are ten kitchens, for the benefit of Students who may prefer to board themselves. These halls are large and convenient, well lighted and ventilated - in every way attractive - and will accommodate one hundred and thirty students. All the rooms, in both buildings, are furnished only with stoves, bedsteads and tables. Students must furnish their own bedding.
