Book excerpt: This book discusses the different understandings of 'catholicity' that emerged in the interactions between the Church of England and other churches - particularly the Roman Catholic Church and later the Old Catholic Churches - from the early 1830s to the early 1880s. It presents a pre-history of ecumenism, which isolates some of the most distinctive features of the ecclesiological positions of the different churches as these developed through the turmoil of the nineteenth century. It explores the historical imagination of a range of churchmen and theologians, who sought to reconstruct their churches through an encounter with the past whose relevance for the construction of identity in the present went unquestioned. The past was no foreign country but instead provided solutions to the perceived dangers facing the church of the present. Key protagonists are John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey, the leaders of the Oxford Movement, as well as a number of other less well-known figures who made their distinctive mark on the relations between the churches. The key event in reshaping the terms of the debates between the churches was the Vatican Council of 1870, which put an end to serious dialogue for a very long period, but which opened up new avenues for the Church of England and other non-Roman European churches including the Orthodox. In the end, however, ecumenism was halted in the 1880s by an increasingly complex European situation and an energetic expansion of the British Empire, which saw the rise of Pan-Anglicanism at the expense of ecumenism.

Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary is a ubiquitous but enigmatic presence in Christian history and culture. The tradition about Mary forms a vast and multi-layered aspect of Western history, culture and spirituality. It is not just in the Catholic tradition that Mary has become a particular focus of study and interest. Mary has also become a crucial interest for Christians outside this tradition (Protestant, Anglican) as a path to ecumenical understanding. This Handbook is intended as a reference for the student or scholar seeking knowledge of the history and contemporary practice of the cult of the Virgin Mary. It provides new essays that give overviews of particular areas of study - both historical and thematic - together with texts from primary sources and important scholarly articles, some of which appear in English for the first time. The book is divided into five Parts. Part One looks at the Virgin Mary in Earliest Christianity, Part Two focuses on the Middle Ages - the period in which the Virgin's cult developed to its greatest extent. Part Three deals with Mariology, or theological doctrines surrounding the Virgin, such as the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception. Part Four considers traditions of devotion to Mary, including the development of the rosary and Marian apparitions. Part Five examines the image of Mary in Art, Literature, and Film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, has always been a stumbling block to understanding among divided Christians. Many Protestants have believed that the Marian devotions practiced by Catholics detract from the centrality of Jesus himself. To Catholics, the dilution of Mary's role in the history of salvation by Protestants has come across as harsh and even unscriptural." "The Dombes Group in south cental France, comprised of Roman Catholic and Reformed scholars, has taken a fresh look at the place of Mary in Christian faith and concluded that she has been more the victim than the cause of discord. The participants found themselves "at one" in their acceptance of the virginal conception and motherhood of Mary. At the same time, the group reminded their coreligionists of areas where both sides still need to be "converted" to authentic Christianity. While warning against the excesses of goddess-theology, they nevertheless concluded that Mary exemplifies "the decisive and perfect example of the Yes which Christian faith must utter.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
