Book excerpt: A pioneering woman missionary hailing from Aberdeen in Scotland, Mary Slessor's journey to Nigeria set an example to all Christian missions; she gained the trust, respect and thanks of the local peoples, and introduced the gospel of Christ. Most notably from a social viewpoint, Slessor managed to convince the Ibibio tribespeople of southern Nigeria to cease killing infants who were twins. The tribes of the region held a belief that one of two twins is an evil spirit; to be certain the spirit was vanquished, both babies would be left to die of exposure in the countryside. Appalled at this practice, Mary Slessor found, rescued and adopted many twins - seeing that the babies grew up to be healthy children, the tribes repented and ceased the abysmal practice. In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, women's rights were inferior to those of men. Mary Slessor used her public profile to support the women's suffrage movement which argued for political enfranchisement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You hold in your hands a piece of history. Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary to Nigeria. Her work ethic and strong personality won the trust and acceptance of local African people in a time where there were but few missionaries, and even fewer women on the field. She was known for the hope of the gospel, loving the people, protecting native children and promoting women's rights. In 1876 Mary followed her call to bring the gospel to Africa. She became known for her pragmatism, strength and humor. Slessor lived a simple life in a traditional house with Efiks. Rediscover for yourself the power of the gospel to bring a people into their destiny, and call a nation into being. The DNA of the early missionaries is an important piece of the puzzle for us today as we walk in the footsteps of these pioneers. We must learn from these stories as we stride into the end of the ages -- when every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of all the Earth!
Book Synopsis Lives of Scottish Women by : William Knox
Download or read book Lives of Scottish Women written by William Knox and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the remarkable stories of ten women whose inspirational lives and struggles exemplify the concerns and problems that other women have faced throughout the last two centuries. Each is the subject of a chapter devoted to her particular story and the times in which she lived. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries witnessed great changes in women's position in Scotland, and yet little is known about the achievements of the Scottish women who were the main agents of these changes. In presenting the life stories of ten women, William Knox provides evidence of the huge contribution made by women to the shaping of modern Scotland. At the same time he shows how the life histories of individuals can reveal previously dark corners of historical understanding and allow a more nuanced picture of Scottish society as a whole. Subjects include Jane Welsh Carlyle, brilliantly gifted, but married to the wayward and demanding Thomas, Sophia Jex-Blake, Scotland's first female doctor, and Mary Slessor,
