Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marvels and Mysteries of Instinct, or Curiosities of Animal Life The subject of this volume first formed the topic of a public lecture, and the interest which its marvels and mysteries then awoke, subsequently induced the Author to fill up at his leisure the sketch he had framed. The principal object has been to select for consideration those phenomena which should instruct as well as entertain the gene ral reader. Simplicity of form has been studied throughout the treatment, especially with regard to all the more abstruse parts, that the whole may be understood by the humblest capacity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instinct Displayed in a Collection of Well-Authenticated Facts: Exemplifying the Extraordinary Sagacity of Various Species of the Animal Creation Reason and Instinct have obvious differences yet the most intelligent animals, in some of their actions, approach so near to reason, that it is really surprising how small the distinction is. The great and most striking superiority of reason seems to consist in these two points: the capacity of knowing and acknowledging our Creator, and of rendering its owner responsible for his conduct. Without investigating further the metaphysical distinctions of Reason and Instinct, to which I am quite incompetent, I will proceed to make some apology for the following work. With that end in view, he has surveyed the members of the Animal Kingdom from numerous aspects, and incorporated under various chapter headings a number of facts bearing upon the lives and ways of beasts, birds, reptiles, fish and insects. The service of the camera has been enlisted to bring more clearly before the eyes of the reader some of the marvels of the animal world which have been briefly referred to in the letterpress, and it is hoped. The Author has from boyhood been a close Observer of the habits of animals, and both upon sea and land he has delighted to endeavour to interpret Nature's works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Habits and Instincts of Animals Experience, and without a knowledge of the end in view, they are impelled to the performance of certain actions, tending to the well-being of the individual, and the preservation of the species. So far, then, and considered as merely a general definition, or rather description, of instinct, this opinion is perfectly satis factory; but it does not reach all the various bearings of this complicated subject. When we find some animals not only impelled to perform certain necessary func tions in a regular and unvarying manner, one gene ration following another in exactly the same track, and supplying their different wants in precisely the same manner, -but also that many others actually vary in what should seem to be the universal ordination of nature, and, as if in obedience to the deductions of reason, accurately adapting their plans to their circum stances, and their measures to those unexpected changes which accident may have wrought in their situation, with these facts upon record, we feel it is not sur prising that some who have written on the subject have gone a step further. They have, in fact, sought to solve the question, by admitting that, besides the faculty of instinct, animals may, in an inferior degree, also possess that of reason. But this admission brings with it fresh difficulties. If once We allow the least degree of reason to the brute creation, we must concede a portion of it altogether incompatible with their situation. Ive must admit that the bee, for instance, is guided in her wonderful Operations, by an acquaintance with those principles of science, which man has required time and reflection to discover. We must, in short, acknow ledge her both a geometrician and a philosopher and endue her with a perception of causes and effects, in consistent with the other habits and appearances of the creature, absolutely derogatory to the superior nature of man. (2) A much more probable solution of this question, and one far more conformable to the relative positions of man and brute, is afforded by the idea, that animals. That would lead us into psychology and metaphysics, while our present purpose is to deal only with what appear to us to be the most interesting facts which concern their natural history, and not to analyse the phenomena of the ape mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology the Study of Animal Life The word zoology is derived from the Greek word zeon, which meant animal, and from the termination - logia, which signified a discourse. The name therefore, as might be ex pected, denotes the science of animals, and is therefore narrower in its scope than the science of biology, which deals with everything living and of which the science of zoology forms a subdivision. We see, therefore, that at the outset we are faced with two fundamental questions, viz. (1) What is life? And (2) What is an animal? To no two questions is it more difficult to give a precise answer than to these. If with Herbert Spencer we define life as the continuous adjustment of internal to external relations, who is the wiser, or who has any better conception of life as a result of the definition? Book excerpt: "A brilliant, witty, and altogether satisfying book." — New York Times Book Review The classic work on the development of human language by the world’s leading expert on language and the mind In The Language Instinct, the world's expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association and the Public Interest Award from the Linguistics Society of America. This edition includes an update on advances in the science of language since The Language Instinct was first published.
