Download or read book Where Have All the Healers Gone? written by Luke Van Orden and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Luke Van Orden has worked in several areas of both clinical medicine and basic medical science. He considers himself a psychotherapist and a “wounded healer”, having had to struggle with his own demons in order to become able to help others. Through his formative years he became disillusioned about the ways that doctors in training become emotionally hardened. He then found that psychiatric training largely failed to produce healers who were emotionally healthy themselves. As medicine became more commercialized he rebelled at the depersonalization of “services” provided to “medical customers.” Where Have All the Healers Gone? tells the story about his own personal growth and his fascinating experiences with patients, many of whom had been badly or unethically treated. Finally, he shares his frustrating experiences with modern medicine as an impersonal corporate business.

Remember what happened to Peter when he took his focus off Jesus and began to focus on his surroundings? That is right; he began to sink. Mama Jo's Book of Prayers: A Prayer for Almost Every Situation Including Scriptures for Study and Meditation will help us hold on to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, during turbulent times. At one point in our history, children all over the world began each weekday communicating with God through prayer at school. God has been deemed unconstitutional and forced to leave our schools. Now, our schools and colleges have become infiltrated with demonic spirits. These demonic spirits have manifested characters of their spiritual wickedness in our children. Mama Jo's Book of Prayers: A Prayer for Almost Every Situation Including Scriptures for Study and Meditation will be the tool God uses to get His people back in prayer. Envision with me, millions of people on one accord studying and meditating on God's Word, praying for more than thirty situations at a time. Mama Jo's Book of Prayers: A Prayer for Almost Every Situation Including Scriptures for Study and Meditation will enable me to be a voice to the masses to deter most of the fiery darts Satan throws by the name of family destruction, bondage, divorce, violence, and others. It is time we come together to pray to stop setting records for acts of violence within our communities. We must fervently pray for our children to surpass records of doing well in school, preparing for a brighter future. Let us make a concerted effort to greet each other with a smile and a hello daily. Remember much prayer, much power. Little prayer, little power. No prayer, no power.

Book Synopsis An Asian American Ancient Historian and Biblical Scholar by : Edwin M. Yamauchi
Download or read book An Asian American Ancient Historian and Biblical Scholar written by Edwin M. Yamauchi and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Asian American Ancient Historian and Biblical Scholar is not simply a memoir of Edwin M. Yamauchi. It is an expansive multi-generational story of a Japanese-American family (Issei, Nisei, Sansei) that began with immigrants from Okinawa, who used a narrow window of time (1900-1915) to emigrate to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations there. After the suicide of his father when he was three, Edwin was raised by his mother, who knew little English, by working as a maid for twelve years. Deprived of other distractions, Edwin turned to the reading of books. From a nominal Buddhist and then a nominal Episcopalian background, Edwin was converted to Christ at the age of fifteen and determined to become a missionary. Lacking in funds, he worked his way through college. With an aptitude for languages, he earned his PhD under Cyrus Gordon. After a short stint at Rutgers University in New Jersey, he enjoyed a long career (1969-2005) at Miami University in Ohio. His memoir includes descriptions of the schools, societies, scholars, and travels of his life, as well as his witness to Christ and his role in the establishment of a campus church.

Book Synopsis Black Dog of Fate by : Peter Balakian
Download or read book Black Dog of Fate written by Peter Balakian and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-02-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "His visions are burning -- his poetry heartbreaking," wrote Elie Wiesel of American poet Peter Balakian. Now, in elegant prose, the prize-winning poet who James Dickey called "an extraordinary talent" has written a compelling memoir about growing up American in a family that was haunted by a past too fraught with terror to be spoken of openly. Black Dog of Fate is set in the affluent New Jersey suburbs where Balakian -- the firstborn son of his generation -- grew up in a close, extended family. At the center of what was a quintessential American baby boom childhood lay the dark specter of a trauma his forebears had experienced -- the Ottoman Turkish government's extermination of more than a million Armenians in 1915, the century's first genocide. In a story that climaxes to powerful personal and moral revelations, Balakian traces the complex process of discovering the facts of his people's history and the horrifying aftermath of the Turkish government's campaign to cover up one of the worst crimes ever committed against humanity. In describing his awakening to the facts of history, Balakian introduces us to a remarkable family of matriarchs and merchants, physicians, a bishop, and his aunts, two well-known figures in the world of literature. The unforgettable central figure of the story is Balakian's grandmother, a survivor and widow of the Genocide who speaks in fragments of metaphor and myth as she cooks up Armenian delicacies, plays the stock market, and keeps track of the baseball stats of her beloved Yankees. The book is infused with the intense and often comic collision between this family's ancient Near Eastern traditions and the American pop culture of the '50s and '60s.Balakian moves with ease from childhood memory, to history, to his ancestors' lives, to the story of a poet's coming of age. Written with power and grace, Black Dog of Fate unfolds like a tapestry its tale of survival against enormous odds. Through the eyes of a poet, here is the arresting story of a family's journey from its haunted past to a new life in a new world.
