Book excerpt: It will be seen that the following Manual of Devotion consists of a series of chapters or instructions upon important points of Christian teaching, which are called "Considerations."These Considerations are written for the purpose of pricking or of wounding the conscience, it may be in many points, that so it may be thoroughly aroused and awakened; of exciting, that is, compunction of the soul, real remorse of conscience for past as well as for present coldness and dryness. It must be a very hard heart, indeed, which is not moved by these "Considerations"so touchingly simple are they, so plain, and so wholly true. They deal with such doctrines and facts as have an universal application, which admit of no dispute, and which are always confirmed by some passage from Holy Scripture. It must be allowed, on all hands, that it is necessary for the soul to be aroused to feel its own needs, to regard its own wounds, that so it may be directed to a source where these needs can be supplied, and these wounds be healed. One great aim of this Treatise, is to arouse, as well as to direct the mind, to lead it to consider its own wants, and to seek by prayer to have those wants supplied. The book is essentially a guide to prayer. It represents, from its beginning to its end, the continual outpouring of heart before God; an outpouring that is of times expressed in the very same words which imply, at the same time, a new phase of thought. Regarded as a Manual of Mental Prayer, each of these "Considerations" has a technical and special signification. They treat of life and death, of the value of time, of the mercy of God, of the habit of sin, of the general and particular judgments, of the love of God, of the Holy Communion, and of kindred subjects equally important. The "Consideration,"as here used, implies far more than a mere inquiry. Its equivalents, the Italian Consideration, and the Latin Consideration, do not fully express its particular meaning in this Treatise, where it stands for a reflectional meditation. It calls into play the exercise of the memory, which puts together all the circumstances of the subject under notice; it excites the imagination, which represents, as in a picture, all such circumstances, bringing them vividly before the mind's eye; and, lastly, it urges the will so to fix and detain these things in the soul, that, by its own effort, it may unite itself with the will of God, so that God's will and the will of man may become one.

Book excerpt: From Slapstick's "Turkey Farm" to Slaughterhouse-Five's eternity in a Tralfamadorean zoo cage with Montana Wildhack, the question of the afterlife never left Kurt Vonnegut's mind. In God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian, Vonnegut skips back and forth between life and the Afterlife as if the difference between them were rather slight. In thirty odd "interviews," Vonnegut trips down "the blue tunnel to the pearly gates" in the guise of a roving reporter for public radio, conducting interviews: with Salvatore Biagini, a retired construction worker who died of a heart attack while rescuing his schnauzer from a pit bull, with John Brown, still smoldering 140 years after his death by hanging, with William Shakespeare, who rubs Vonnegut the wrong way, and with socialist and labor leader Eugene Victor Debs, one of Vonnegut's personal heroes. What began as a series of ninety-second radio interludes for WNYC, New York City's public radio station, evolved into this provocative collection of musings about who and what we live for, and how much it all matters in the end. From the original portrait by his friend Jules Feiffer that graces the cover, to a final entry from Kilgore Trout, God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian remains a joy.

Book excerpt: Preparations for Death, Or Considerations on the Eternal Maxims is a philosophical and religious work written by Saint Alphonsus Maria De Liguori. Saint De Liguori was a Catholic Bishop of Italian descent who lived during the eighteenth century. This work represents De Liguori's ruminations on the topic of death. The book is intended to prepare the reader for the death that is "imminent for all humans." The author remarks early that no individual can escape death, and that we must thus be prepared for death at all times. The book is divided into considerations, which each examine a specific aspect of dying. These considerations are examined in three parts, each discussing said consideration from a different angle, intended to make the subject matter approachable by those in any stage of life. Every section begins with a quote from scripture and closes with a series of prayers. In all, the author examines thirty-six distinct considerations. Saint Alphonsus Maria De Liguori's work is the writing of a wise man. His prose is simple and encourages the reader to enter an almost meditative state. While this book may appeal primarily to practicing Catholics, De Liguori efforts to make his work approachable by non-believers as well. Few writers could tackle such a challenging topic and pull it off the way De Liguori has. Preparations for Death, Or Considerations on the Eternal Maxims is a deeply affecting book on coming to terms with mortality and preparing for the inevitable. It is a reminder of the fleeting nature of existence, and the importance of living a good life. As a tool to improve one's life by preparing for death, Alphonsus Maria De Liguori's book is highly recommended. Book excerpt: Brand new translation of St. Alphonsus Liguori's, Apparecchio alla Morte, capturing the simplicity of the Italian, while using correct ecclesiastical vocabulary. It is annotated copiously and contains an extensive bibliography. This translation is a major improvement over others that have been published, as they are all based on the 1830 English version. Preparation for Death delves into Church teaching on the four last things: death, judgment, hell, and heaven. It is not a somber book. More than 250 years after it was written, St. Alphonsus speaks to us as a loving shepherd, wishing for the salvation of all. He shows us that death is a sunny topic, if properly viewed as a portal to eternity, and if we have the desire and the perseverance to lead a life ordered to the Will of God. He teaches us to prepare early for the blessed life to come, and shows us how. Striking in the absence of overt theologizing, and faithful to the teachings of Holy Mother Church, St. Alphonsus does not fail to emphasize that sin is evil, that man is stained, and that his whole existence should be directed to-wards the glory of God. St. Alphonsus rarely makes abstractions, preferring to use ordinary, everyday vernacular, and employing examples to carry the weight of his arguments. In 36 pithy chapters, he stresses that the work of salvation is an individual act, in willing cooperation with God's grace, aided by the Angels and Saints, especially Mary most holy, our Blessed Mother, on whom he calls for aid at the end of each of the 108 devotions and prayers.

Book excerpt: SOME persons asked me to write a book on the Eternal Maxims, for the use of those who desire to establish themselves in virtue and to advance in a spiritual life. Others requested me to prepare a collection of matter for the sermons of the missions and of the spiritual exercises. Not to multiply books, labor, and expense, I resolved to compose the work in the present form, with the hope that it might answer both purposes. To render it useful as a book of meditations for seculars, I have divided the considerations into three points. Each point will serve for one meditation, and therefore I have annexed to each point affections and prayers. I entreat my readers not to grow weary, if, in those prayers, they always find petitions for the grace of perseverance and of divine love. For us, these are the two graces most necessary for the attainment of eternal salvation. The grace of divine love is, according to St. Francis de Sales, the grace which contains in itself all graces: because the virtue of charity toward God brings with it all other virtues. Now all good things come to me together with her (Wisd. VII, II) He who loves God is humble, chaste, obedient, and mortified; in a word, he possesses all virtues. " Love," says St. Augustine, " and do what you wish" (Ama, et fac quod vis). They who love God labor to avoid whatever is offensive to him, and seek to please him in all things. The grace of perseverance is that grace by which we obtain the eternal crown. St. Bernard says that Paradise is promised to those who begin a good life, but is only given to those who persevere. " To beginners a reward is promised, but to him who perseveres it is given;." (De modo bene vivere, s. 6) But this gift of perseverance is, as the Fathers teach, given only to those who ask it. Hence St. Thomas asserts that to enter heaven continual prayer is necessary. And our Redeemer said: We ought always to pray, and not to faint. (Luke XIII, 1) It is because they do not pray for the gift of perseverance that so many miserable sinners, after having obtained pardon, lose again the grace of God. Their sins are forgiven; but because they afterward neglect to ask of God the grace of perseverance, particularly in the time of temptations, they relapse into sin. And although the grace of final perseverance is altogether gratuitous, and cannot be merited by good works; still Suarez teaches that it can be infallibly obtained by prayer: and according to St. Augustine, it may be merited by humble supplication.(De Dono persev. C. 6) This necessity of prayer I have demonstrated at length in another little work, entitled The Great Means of Prayer. This book, though small, has cost me a great deal of labor. I consider it to be of extreme utility to all sorts of persons; and I unhesitatingly assert that, among all spiritual treatises, there is none, and there can be none, more necessary than that which treats on prayer as a means of obtaining eternal salvation. To render these considerations useful to preachers who have but few books or little time for reading, I have furnished these considerations with texts of Scripture and passages from the Fathers, which are short, but strong and animated, as they ought to be in sermons. The three points of each consideration will supply matter for one sermon. I have endeavored to collect from many authors the sentiments which appeared to me best suited to move the will, and have inserted several of them expressed briefly, that the reader may select and extend at pleasure those that please him most. May all tend to the glory of God! I pray my reader to recommend me to Jesus Christ, whether I am living or dead (Now that St. Alphonsus Liguori is a canonized Saint we ask for his intercession); and I promise to do the same for all those who perform this act of charity toward me. Live Jesus, our love, and Mary, our hope! This work is excerpted from a larger work of Saint Alphonsus with the same name.

Book excerpt: Excerpt: THE object of the present treatise is expressed by a passage which is to be met within one of the Epistles of St. Fulgentius, on the subject of prayer: "Compunction of soul excites an affection for prayer," humble prayer obtains the Divine help. Compunction of soul, leads it to regard its wounds? But prayer earnestly demands the medicine for its healing. And who is sufficient for these things.? For who can pray as he ought, unless the Divine Physician Himself pours into the heart the beginning of spiritual desire."It will be seen that the following Manual of Devotion consists of a series of chapters or instructions on important points of Christian teaching, which are called "Considerations." These Considerations are written for the purpose of pricking or of wounding the conscience. It may be in many points, so that it may be thoroughly aroused and awakened of excitement, that is, compunction of the soul, real remorse of conscience for past as well as for present coldness and dryness. It must be a very hard heart, indeed, to not be moved by these "Considerations"so touchingly simple are they, so plain, and so wholly true. They deal with such doctrines and facts as to having a universal application, which admits of no dispute, and which are always confirmed by some passages from the Holy Scripture. It must be allowed on all hands, that it is necessary for the soul to be aroused to feel its own needs, to regard its own wounds, so that it may be directed to a source where these needs can be supplied, and these wounds be healed. One great aim of this treatise, is to arouse, as well as to direct the mind, to lead it to consider its own wants, and to seek by prayer to have those wants supplied. The book is essentially a guide to prayer. It represents from its beginning to its end, the continual outpouring of one's heart before God. An outpouring that is at times expressed in the very same words which imply, a new phase of thought. These several repetitions are not to be regarded as tokens of intellectual inferiority, but as developments of a plan, which is both carefully laid down and accurately carried out under a seeming carelessness of expression. Regarded as a Manual of Mental Prayer, each of these "Considerations" has a technical and special significance. Their treatment of life and death, of the value of time, of the mercy of God, of the habit of sin, of the general and particular judgments, of the love of God, of the Holy Communion, and of kindred subjects equally important. The "Consideration," as used here, implies far more than a mere inquiry. Its equivalent, the Italian Consideration, and the Latin Consideration, do not fully express its particular meaning in this treatise, where it stands for a reflectional meditation. It calls into play the exercise of the memory, which puts together all the circumstances of the subject under notice. It excites the imagination, which represents, as in a picture, all such circumstances, bringing them vividly before the mind's eye; and, lastly, it urges the will to fix and detain these things in the soul, that, by its own effort, it may unite itself with the will of God, so that God's will and the will of man may become one. St. Thomas Aquinas defines "Considerations" to be "an act of the intellect, and of the beholding the truth of a proposition," (Sum 22E, Q. 53.4) to be, moreover, principally related to the judgment. As one of the three divisions of prayer, these "Considerations" must also be considered as reflections, as reasonings of the mind upon definite subjects, either for its perfect conviction of some vital truth, or for its persuasion to the formation of some holy resolution. The chief end of all such reflections, must be the bringing of the soul into communion with God; but this cannot be done by the intellect alone.
